I am going to sell a Semi-auto and go with a 20” AT in .308. I have a NF ATACR 4-16x42. No night vision or thermal. Should I go 1.18, 1.35, or 1.5 height and should I get any cant? This is my first bolt gun and probably my last.

Get a 20 moa just because it won’t hurt anything and only help.

With the at the taller the better imo, especially if you don’t have super high cheek bones. You can raise the cheek piece basically as high as you need it. You can only go so low with it though and everyone I’ve been behind I have to really smoosh my face into to get a peek through the scope.

I say 1.35

IMO
It raises the height above bore line to act as a counter to the recoil impulse by also elevating your point of contact at the shoulder when you get behind the gun.

But at the same time it doesn't make your scope look like its on stilts.

I agree on the multi platform/thermal position. You may not know it yet , but running a bolt is pretty addictive. Hard to have just one. Clip on sights are dropping in price over time. Good to keep options open.

Pictured 1.36 and 1.50 mounts for comparison. The 42mm ATACR objective + 1.50 will have slightly more space over the barrel as compared to my 44mm front on the LRHSi.

For an AR, go taller, 1.5" for sure.

For a bolt gun... I'd lean towards 1.18"/1.35", but I'd wait to have it in your hands, depending on how the chassis fits you and how it adjusts one might be better versus the other.

The trend has been for guys to use higher mounts even on bolt guns, so a 1.5" might be just fine, but it depends on how the rig fits IMO.

Bone structure and musculature will play a role. I wouldn’t run a 1.5” on a bolt even if it’s popular now - I don’t have the cheek bones you fellas must have because I run out of vertical adjustment on the cheek piece using mounts that high.

Have you shot an at? The cheekpiece at its lowest on an at is equal the top of the action where others are halfway up its adjustment range to get to that level. Its not that you need that much clearance for the scope itself, its that you need that much for your face to get in line with it without rocking it on the side like a confused puppy. .
