This was mentioned in the big Ukraine thread, but since this is The Hide, a near record shot kinda deserves its own place.

Couple of Brit papers and the NY Post have picked up the tale.

Presented for your careful and considered analysis:

The supposed official Ukrainian source for this feat:

I don't speak Ukrainian, perhaps someone can translate.

Archived, just in case it disappears

Shockingly, some comments in the NY Post article are doubtful this shot actually took place as claimed! 😲

Who better to carefully analyze this skillful use of what was doubtless a Dragunov or perhaps the mighty 6.5 Kreedmorski, than the experienced practitioners of the art here?

Here is an internet translation: (no Idea on accuracy)

The Ukrainian sniper came close to the world record for the highest combat sniper striker

The accurate shoot of our special name of the occupier was formed from the distance of 2710 - which now sat down the 2nd place in the world rating, approved by the commands of the ZSU.

Guess that the first place in the world is occupied by the shooting of a Canadian sniper at a distance of 3,540 meters at a viconannya in Iraq. The other place lay British Craig Harrison, at a distance of 2,475 meters.

@AFUStratCom - the only relevant and the new ones are the ones

Wait, we will soon find out that the sniper was a good ol boy from the (Texas) region of the Ukraine. He will have a real "boy next door" look about him and he will love Jesus and his family and will interview well on the view.

Whenever a conflict starts to wear on the populace, a hero is created. We've been doing it forever. A sniper is the easiest soldier to use for these hero making missions because the average person can imagine that the sniper can easily be singled out for individual efforts.

So, now I'll say it: the war heroes you grew up believing in were fabricated by the US government. Hathcock is the biggest fraud in us military history. His book is toilet paper, all bullshit. Chris Kyle refused to completely cooperate with the government bullshit himself. That's why he made it clear that he didn't even write the book, and had no idea where they came up with his "confirmed kill" numbers. It's all bullshit.

Am I correct in that it was not a one shot, one kill but three shots for the kill?

It says STRIPPER. Comprehension! This story sucks without it being a stripper.

Are there thermals that can produce a picture like that at that distance?
Having spent a whole lot of time behind thermal hog/coyote hunting one thing comes to mind. Wow. That's a lot of magnification for 1.68 miles and amazing image quality *if* that was shooter pov. Also the recoil to thermal image dropping out of view was well under 1 second so was he shooting a hypersonic rail gun? I shoot at 1 mile and 2k a lot and buddy with 338NM has a flight time to 1 mile a smidge over 3 seconds.....so theres that....if that was indeed shooter POV with a thermal and DVR.

Albedo might. 2m thermal resolution from space.

Satellite is "refrigerator sized" which would make mounting on a conventional rifle problematic.

Translation of the Ukraine news report:
Ukrainian sniper came close to the world record for the farthest combat sniper shot With an accurate shot of our special forces officer, the occupier was eliminated from a distance of 2710m - the distance, which now occupies the 2nd place in the world ranking, confirmed by the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Recall that the first place in the world is occupied by the shot of a Canadian sniper at a distance of 3540 meters when performing a task in Iraq. Second place belonged to the British Craig Harrison, at a distance of 2475 meters.

TOF is less than 2 seconds. Maybe 1200 yards. Looks like the target was just done with taking a crap.

There is only a handful of UA snipers that can make a shot like that and I haven't heard form any of them 🙄

The size of the reticle, trees and the humans in that video do not equal that distance. I dont know the correct terminology when estimating range through optics, but that is NOT 1.68 miles.
the Ukrainian MOD is doubling down on the story and saying now that it was a really tall Russian.

I don’t know what the magnification was on his scope, but that’s a pretty good image for nearly 2 miles away. Every war needs a hero to keep it going.

If I only understood those f.. clip ?
Ukraine people best at everything. Best at shoot gun. Shoot Moscali at mile away, never miss. Best at fighting. Do not need 120 billion but take anyway since you offer. Best at make decorative eggs. Best at fly airplane. Hero of Ukrainia, Suka Khohol, great pilot who destroy 20 fighter jet! Here picture of him landing after latest encounter with Moscali. Slava Ukraini!
