Yes, some of the Unertl scopes that the CMP sold came with the Devtron Scopecoats too.

I’ve got 2 from CMP, but neither had the scopecoats. However I have seen them sell with them. This one didn’t come from CMP. Trying to remember where I got it.

Ebay gets the eagle scope covers off and on. In my platoon they were privately purchased so I saw green and black.
The sock method was simple.
Cut a slit in a sock lengthwise but leave the toes and calf intact. Slip the sock over the scope through the slit. Tie the calf/opening in a knot.
The sock will now slip off and on using the cut slit.
Clear as mud?
Exactly this.

We had some of the Eagle covers but rarely used them, only when we knew we were going to be rough on the rifle like fast roping and the sort. Otherwise they were big and bulky so we didn’t care for them.

The ScopeCoat trapped moisture and caused the scope to rust. We also didn’t use them.

Green issue tube sock was 95% what we used, cut and tied as described above. Kept the bulk of the sand and sun out, all we cared about. And yes, it was something you’d get your ass smoked for not using one, nobody wanted their mildots falling off due to sun passing directly through for a length of time.

Mourning,
I have been on the range lately with my m40a1 and noticed my scope is moving in the rings,, yes, rings are tight and I sure as hell do not want to snap a screw off.. mount is TWOMANATTAC and seemed at first to be a good fit… what should I try and do to fix this problem.. Unertl scope…spec rifle..
Thanks in advance

Contact twoman, I’m sure if it’s out of spec he will make it right. I have 2 of his mounts and haven’t had any issues

Thanks,
My scope has some wear on the tube,, thinking rings are correct, my tube is out of spec,, just thinking out loud...

Keep in mind the original Unertl scopes got abused, badly. We would have constant problems with rusting at the rings, steel tube and salt water for an amphibious force don’t mix well, so we would have to CLP that area often yet still rust would form trapped between the rings and tube, pretty ugly few I’ve seen when pulled out of the mounts and we would take a green scratch pad to them to clean it up. Add the stout recoil an A1 has and potentially loose rings and you get wear. Take a caliper to it to see just how much wear you might be dealing with.

Degrease the surfaces, light coat of rosin and torque snug enough (but of course not too much), use best judgement on it. I’d avoid any other sort of shimming material, worst case I would probably order a new undersized mount for it.

Any tricks to torquing the rings. I would love to be able to use a torque wrench on them.

.22LR Trainer I built off of a 40-X. Had to cut the barrel down, but it was a heavy, bull barrel..

22trainer3.jpg

After I cut the barrel, I hand crowned it with crowning reamers I purchased online.
No lathe... Not even a jerry rigged drill..... Did it all by twisting by hand..

.22trainercrown.jpg

Bedding job I did on the trainer.

22trainerbedding.jpg

crossed my mind to try and make a .22LR elevation assembly, but got sidetracked..
22trainer1.jpg

Made the Tube Books a couple of years back... Think I gave them all away.... Gotta check my storage unit.

22trainer2.jpg

Here is the M40A1 I built.... Smear stock, CMP Unertl, proper serial # range receiver, Marine Tex bedding... Forgot who clip slotted for me. Got a couple of Unertl .50 cal from the CMP for real cheap.... Broken reticles, stripped rods, bad detents, but I fixed em.
When USO did that last run of 10x's, I made friends with someone over there and had them manufacture a couple of extra
10x elevation assemblies to convert them back to 10xs.

Where have you been hiding?

I put on a NRL Hunter match last weekend and wanted a drop gun stage.

COF was to run up, guess the range of the target, dial the scope to yardage and shoot. Bonus time for getting the hit.

Full spec build. Thing shoots lights out. Nosler donated the ammo (168 gr match ammo) and the 300 BDC mark lined up perfect with a center hit if you held for wind correctly. Not many people got hits on it and the target was easily 2x as large as vitals on an animal...the main reasons I hate fudds on internet bragging about 500+ yd kills...how many animals did you injure before that...

Pic is a youth shooter sizing it up. He could not get eye relief (IYKYK) so he didnt fire it.

Id love to build a trainer, but 40x hard to find

Is this the correct type sock?

You should look for an old circa 1980s wool type one.

I need to go up in my attic soon to stack some luggage.

I could check the sea bag for one without too much DNA and send it to you.

Won’t be younger than 1990.

PM an address and be patient with me.

Thank you I’ll send a PM I appreciate it.

I don't believe there was a special nsn for the sock. Green or black boot sock.
I was around 8541s from 97 to 2001 and saw both colors.

My shitty day with the state of MA had a silver lining…. @Jrb572 your socks are on the way.

Lady at PO is a trip, totally anti covid, went to a few political things with her this past winter/spring. Local tried to get her cancelled on her job and she has been with PO decades.

She got pissed because I used a mailing option I had available - priority tyvek envelope.

She was like what is this and I was embarrassed to say old socks.

She stuffed my envelope in a second envelope because it would be two dollars less to ship.

I have seen her at Christmas time save peeps big money having them repackage shit with materials she provides than brings them back to front of the line.

Example of a good public servant.

A1 lasted long enough to make it into the era of Lycra and poly blended socks but in my day when it was the hot girl in STA Platoon sporting a smear or newer woodland, socks were wool with no stretchy materials to keep their shape.

Good socks actually but I was too dumb than to know they needed a silk liner if planning on any serious use.

After 5 years of “as newly built” condition, I decided to paint The Reyvn. Same paint techniques/colors as my MK12s and MC6SD.
Of course, I changed the mount system to the A3 (I think?) to increase comfort and shoot-ability. It made a world of difference, along with the McM installed adjustable buttplate system.

Any of you folks from the Chattanooga area? Just relocated myself down here, almost done setting up shop.
Need some recommendations on where to shoot.... (outside of my backyard)..
When I was based out of Knoxville, finding shooting spots in TN wasn’t the easiest. I did look into a private range down your way, IIRC had a 1000yd line with butts though. A google search should pull it up, if it’s still operating anyhow.

There’s another up to Oak Ridge, big one that hosts a lot of F-Class along with across the course NRA/CMP matches, would be surprised if they didn’t have something tactical LR based by now though. Need to have a member sponsor there, I was never around enough to bother going through the member process since I was working overseas then, the ex’s uncle was a member and really spoke favorable about the facility though. He shot Garand matches and cowboy action mostly, and ran pits for F-Class there.

Ok, this should be interesting, I'm looking for your opinions.
What scope do you prefer on my 40X .22lr clone: Redfield M40 commemorative-Weaver T-10, or the fake Unertl made out of a Redfield 3x9?

If it makes any difference, I'm pretty sure it was the Weaver T-10 on the 40x trainers we used at Quantico. It's been a while, but that's what I recall.
Thanks, that's very interesting!
It's a great scope, just a bit awkward adjusting the parallax. It is adjustable though which is a definite advantage over the other two!

Strategic Edge is about 2hr from you, great range that goes out to 1250y. Membership fees are reasonable.
