Hi All,
I currently shoot 338 lapua magnum (300 grain berger out of a 26 inch barrell in an AI AXMC). I am looking to take part in ELR matches and considering an upgrade to 33XC.

However I want to make sure that I dont just get carried away by all the advertised advantages (higher MV) but also understand the problems with this new caliber.

Are there shooters here who have shot both 338 LM as well as 33XC? I am interested in their opinion about advantages and disadvantages of 33xc vis a vis a 338 LM.

Please only add your inputs in case you have used both these calibers and/or you are an active ELR competitor. Grateful for your time and attention.

I shoot my 338lm out to 2700 yards and that is pushing it. The local match I go I use a 373ct , some guys are using the 33cx and in low wind score just as well as I do. They are all using Berger 300 hy's and the work really good. Were I score better is in wind over 5 mph and when it changes rapidly.
I had a 33xc barrel spun up for my AXMC and had major pressure issues turned out to be a bad barrel. It was enough that I sold the brass and the dies and went 375ct. Having said that there are many using the 33xc with great results.
The 33xc just out preforms the 338lm.

what is the barrell life of 375ct and how does that compare to 33xc? I understand 33xc is fairly new but trying to understand why the barrell life on 375ct should be better provided both fire the round at similar velocities.
 
I know nothing about the XC. But for me the .338 LM is lacking for 300gr bullet. I've had much better results with 250 and 285.

If I were committed to the 300gr bullet I would look for a cartridge that could do at least 200 fps more than the LM.

Perhaps play with the ballistic tables and see what makes you happy. Just don't forget there is more to life than numbers. Make sure you can be comfortable shooting it.

thanks for the insights. Can you throw more color on your last statement that the 33xc outperforms 338LM. I assume it is primarily wind? if you can share examples on hold differences, will be great...thanks

Play with the numbers in a ballistic calculator, if you need to be spoon fed the numbers just quit now.

375 CT will have a short barrel life yes.

Your over reliance on ballistic calculator shows that you have little experience shooting elr. Remember calculators dont replicate real life 100%, there is nuance which is known only through experience. One day you will understand this, hopefully.

Yep your right. You can't use a calculator in ELR, everyone uses real DOPE.

This was sarcasm, you need to tune and true your ballistic solver so it does match up or damn close so that you can trust it to atleast get you a miss that you can spot. The fact is the numbers it spits out will be close enough for you to get a comparison of what the ballistic differences are.

It’s hard to figure out what you were trying to achieve with this thread. You ask questions (which could have easily found with google) and then harass the people trying to help you.

You also must think that you have more money then we do (we don’t care) since you keep bringing up the low wages we make (I’m sure with the individuals posting in this forum you’re wrong).

The Tubb stuff is very efficient. it's very accurate

There is nothing wrong with a 338, you just have to load it right, too many handicap the cartridge by going heavier than necessary or needed.

But any of the Tubb Cartridges are gonna be very good, the question becomes can you exploit it
