.223 - 5.56

Sta-Ball likes 140's, 147's etc.
Haven't heard many people running it with light stuff.

I just recently came across a box of 69 grain berger match burners that I had never tried before. I loaded those in lake city brass with 23.5 grains of TAC and got .75 MOA. Easy on the wallet on tight groups. Also work well with 23.5 grains of CFE 223

Considering Barnes is a bullet manufacturer I'd find it hard to believe they're loaded ammo has with their competitors slug.
I'd find it hard to believe Barnes would let Berger use their trademarked Match Burner name.
And who's talking about loaded ammo?

So I got out to shoot some F Class at 1000 yards with my 26" 223 PRS rifle with 88 grain ELDMs. My buddy was also there running his 30" 6BR PRS rifle with Berger 105s.

At 1000 yards, I needed 29.25 MOA of elevation and my buddy with his 6BR needed 30.25, so I was exactly 1 MOA flatter. My velocity I used on the Kestrel to match was 2835 FPS. My brass was on the 5th firing. I can certainly run a hotter load, but accuracy seems pretty good here.

Conditions were a bit tricky and admittedly I am out of practice after not being able to shoot F Class here in Canada since the start of the whole covid thing.

My score for the first stage was 70 with 2 Vs, so in MOA terms, that's 2 shots inside 1/2 MOA + 8 shots inside 1 MOA, and 5 shots that leaked into the 2 MOA 4 ring. The target I was on was right next to a berm that is known to cause unpredictable verticals and I fell for a few of those. I'm sure I would have got a couple more 5s if I didn't hold higher after a shot dropped out the bottom.

As for a 6 BR being "better", well that's a stretch. Keep in mind I could run 90 grain Atips and the 6 BR could run 110 Atips to swing the numbers, but we were closely matched out there.

If that was a PRS match, there would have been no difference on score based on this accuracy.

Sorry, I don't know the exact score my buddy got, but it was similar.

What load was that with the 88s?

Pretty stout load but seeing as I use 25.1 with my 75 ELDs it's not out of the range. What OAL you using?

Guys, the load data is interesting and thank you. However, I can't much use it because on most cases poster fails to note what type rifle he is using for stated accuracy...bolt or AR. That said, some post accuracy but at what distance is that accuracy. Now don't get torches and pitchforks out but 100 yd accuracy isn't the yard stick I can use. Now tell me what your 300 yd and 600 yd accuracy is, FPS of that load and I'll be taking notes on your loads and hitting the range to do load development. If anyone has an AR accuracy load, at 300 and 600 yds pls post it or PM to me. Preferably 77 and 80 gr bullet loads.

I shoot 600,800 and 1000 yds with my AR's. ...of course on very still less windy days when I go beyond 600 yds. I probably stuck my foot in someone's punch bowl about uselessness of 100 yd accuracy but we all shoot different objectives and with a 1000 yd range 11 miles out my back door, I am focused on longer distance shooting. Duly note, others don't have such range access so results are posted with 100 yd accuracy as that seems to be what most ranges are these days.... a sad note to our society.

There’s another sticky for AR load data.

Got my .223 TAC class rifle together recently and bought two cases of the Berger 77gr OTM loaded ammunition to break in the 26” Proof Prefit. I have 1500 75gr ELDM’s and 500 new Lapua brass but just curious which powder has the best results normally with that combination. I have 8-10lbs of Varget, 10lbs of N-140 and 2lbs of 8208 at the moment.

Did you steal my rifle and put a NF on it? LOL Any of those powders will work. I have used Varget and 8208 with 75s and I know others use N140. I would try using the powder you don't use for something else between the Varget and N140 as only 2 pounds of 8208 will only load about 550 rounds.

Funny thing is I did have my Razor Gen II on it before I put it back on my .22lr. I actually switched my ZCO over to it the other night because we have a night shoot coming up in November and if needed I like the reticle illumination better on the ZCO than the ATACR.

Night shoot a match or you guys just going shooting?

I thought I saw something about that maybe on facebook but not having a NV or thermal I didn't pay anymore attention. Have fun.

Anyone run one of these mags in a MDT style chassis?
The 10 round MDT mags work flawless. However I'm looking 4 1 that's shorter.
I just want to make sure it runs OK before purchase.

I run the 10rd accurate that uses the same insert in the AICS footprint in my ACC. Runs fine. Can't imagine that the shorter flavor will work differently. Haven't heard reports of them not running smoothly.

Any of you guys have any experience with the 90 vld? I have a 26 inch 223ai. I measured distance to Jame is about 2.580 OAL so I'm gonna seat them at 2.575 and trying to decide on a powder. Per GRT SW precision looks like it can get me up to 25.1 and about 2840 fps. N540 is similar. Any other suggestions?

2840 is an optimistic velocity for the 2.580 OAL. I run just a bit faster with Varget but my OAL is sneaking up on 2.700".

I dont try to go any faster than 2900 FPS. That's about as hard as I will push it with fire formed cases.

Just watch your pressures once you get above 2800. Having a real accurate scale to weight your powder will keep you from getting in trouble on the high end.

So I actually found that all the 90 vlds I have are the same lot number and they are all messed up. Initial seating pressure but then they were loose inside the neck.. and no I didn't seat past the ogive lol

Just ordered a 20" Krieger 7tw barrel from my
Buddies shop. Having it chambered in standard 223. Looking to use it as a coyote barrel with minimal match use as it's in a manners LRH stock. What would be some good loads for 55 or 60gr vmax's?

What's a good load range for 8208 with the 80 eldm? I'm thinking about 23.8-24.5. Going to seat to about 2.500 in a wylde chamber.

Anyone know off hand how lapua 223 loads with TAC translate in FC brass?
To answer my own question since I tested it today and found out....

(This is my brass, doesn't mean that YOUR brass will be the same)

Rem 223- FC - 19 brass with a 77gr smk bullet, took 0.2 gr more TAC to achieve the same speed as the same load with lapua brass.

I was running 24.3gr of Ramshot TAC in lapua brass with cci400 primers , behind a 77gr smk bullet. My MV for that load is 2846.

In the FC brass, I needed 24.5 gr of TAC to achieve an MV of 2838, though with more shots (to be comparable with the lapua brass MV) I think that MV would move up closer to the lapua MV and be virtually the same.

So now I can go load upal my FC brass and store it in the closet with all their friends for a rainy day...

That might be too light of a bullet for a 7 twist barrel.

I also have a 1:7 223. I have some 53gr vmax I'm going to try soon. The 53 is longer so I think it will be better suited for this barrel. I also have some 55s I might try as well.

Hey 223 shooters... just wondering how much neck tension are you running. I have a few pet loads that get the occasional flyer. Thinking about upping my neck tension some.
I load 80.5s long and mandrel the necks to a half tho tension. So.. with spring back I'm thinking maybe a full tho?
I was going to try a one tho mandral, in cleaning my tension one half tho and see what happens.
So.. like I said what are you guys running?

I run .002" and it seats very easy but holds the bullet well and shoots extremely well. I'd bump it up to .0015 or .002

Who would have thunk it... I always assumed I was getting. 0005 spring back. I took my gauge pins out Saturday and did some measuring. (Don't recall if they are + or - ). They measure .222. That's on necks I set with .2235 pins.
Go figure.

You are running .002" then huh? Depends on the brass as to the amount of spring back but I would think that would be good. Are you annealing the brass?

Lapua brass with a decent amount of firings. Yes, I do flame anneal every fireing.

Now not being smart enough to leave well enough alone I'm thinking of lowering that tension a tad. :)

I don't think it's tension as much as consistent tension on each case but it's not like it's a big deal to try it and see. Just make sure the bullet isn't getting pushed back in the case when it cycles before you just roll with it. If you don't have enough friction fitting then it can push the bullet into the case deeper than you'd want and potentially can cause some pressure issues for you. Just check that with 4 or 5 cycling it by hand and make sure

You make a good point. When it's warmer I load single by hand. As it gets colder ... older fingers don't work so well on the tiny 223. Mag loading is how I do it.

Anybody play with ARcomp? Looks to be possibly faster than 8208 XBR which is my new favorite powder but it seems about as fast as I'd want to go. Not sure though, gonna have to try some and see for the the 75-80gr stuff.

Hey... have any of you guys measured the flash hole (Lapua match 223) with a pin gauge? Just wondering what they gauge @ vs my decapping pins.
Thanks!!

ARComp is a solid choice for 60gr and heavier. I like Benchmark and N133 as well especially if the bullet weight is a tad lighter like 50-55 gr.

I just checked 10 random pieces . 4x fired and purchased a few years back . They are 0.078" - 0.079" . I have no newly purchased to measure .
