New Magpul DAKA Grid

I was asked what was the most interesting thing I saw at Shot Show this year and I replied, "Its not a gun." Sometimes you see a product that is so simple and obvious that it's brilliant. In two simple words: foam LEGO bricks.

DAKA is the brand name of Magpul's non-firearms brand which puts out products for camping, organizing, and outdoors. At Shot Show 2023, they introduced their DAKA Grid System and their new hard shell travel cases and their patented new internal storage GRID blocks. These are foam plastic blocks which can be assembled and connected to customize storage for rifles, camera gear, or whatever you want to protect inside their hard-cases or any box, case, or luggage.

No longer will need to an electric foam cutter or a new pluck-and-pull panel when you change out your scope or other gear. Its such a simple idea that I wonder how long it'll take before this is ripped off and shows up on Amazon or AliExpress?

It's probably already in the design process.

It is a little ironic that the AR-15 is colloquially known as Legos for adults and this system works just like Legos, only upsized.

This looks great. Magpul just dropped a ton of new stuff that looks awesome as usual.

The issue I see is due to the size and few blocks you get at least from the example photos I've seen so far it seems like it's going to be hard to really support guns and esp. multiple accessories in lots of places and ensure they are not sliding around. Maybe if it came with 30 blocks instead of 10. The plus side is it's ridiculously expensive to replace foam these days, so having an adjustable setup will probably pay off sooner or later. It was over $50 to replace foam in the last pelican I had to re-do and that was from a foam shop. $100+ for Pelican 1750 replacement foam from them.

Also it kind of seems like a "Hey we couldn't think of any other way to get people to spend another $200 for an add-on to their $300 plastic gun case, so we came up with this!"

agree, seems like a reach to keep relevant..... like Todd ^^ says, better to just buy foam and make your own spaces.

As soon as it comes out for the 1750 I'll probably pick one up. Love the idea of flexibility and changing it up as needed.

I got the grid for the larger pelican vault as soon as they announced it. Fortuitous since I was looking at the ragged cutout in both layers and wondering how I could get it to reliably fit a 3rd different rifle. I rarely travel with more than 1 rifle so I figured it saved me space I’m not having to have multiple cases and $ because I don’t have to repeatedly buy new foam.

First take, what it comes with works. I do wish it had more blocks but only because I want to have more, not because I need them. I’m more looking forward to the expansion organizers that will come out later, as I think they’ll make it even more useful.

Then again, I’m also the guy who has 10+ of those stacking tool organizers, so I’m clearly biased towards want vs need.

I am seriously looking at this, since I participate in multiple shooting sports and have very limited storage. the ability to go from a lever action plus shotgun and two revolvers, to a precision rifle, to a Silhouette rifle and only need to have one case is huge. It just looks like I could be investing two to thee time the cost of the case in inserts.

I’m more interested in the DAKA case than the foam grid. Looks like a well-thought-out case with good latches. I hope you can buy them separately and then put in your own high-density closed-cell polyethylene foam.

They probably will at some point. There's a handful of online retailers that sell cases only, no foam. I'd be curious if it's a waterproof lifetime warranty one or like the newer Vaults a 1yr warranty and water resistant. And/or if the latter, what the price point will be.

Wonder why they went with square peg like grid base holes versus a round hole style. You’d think you’d have more versatility with round hole, especially with using those 2 and 3 hole blocks. You could orientate them vertically/horizontally/diagonally vs just vertical/horizontal.
