Best 9mm Carry Round

I've settled on 124 grain standard pressure HST. Any decent places to buy 50 or 100?

Thanks!

May I ask why you would choose 124 over 147?

I have experience shooting the standard pressure 124, 147
&
124+ P, 147 +p

The recoil difference between 124+ P and 147 are pretty much equal, The lighter being faster and the heavier being a slight more push

The difference between 124 standard and 147+ P is noticeable but not huge

I would personally not recommend 147+p, as I don't believe there's much gain in it

For 124 I would consider the plus P for the extra energy

147 standard is what I would use even for a short barrel

Looking at lucky gunner data, HST seems to win over gold dots. Both are used by police-probably cant go wrong either way. HST: 124 gn beats 147, with the exception of the 147+p. The 147+p penetrates "too much" and is only slight more penetration than the 124 anyway - not worth the recoil probably. 124 std is already going 18.3". Others have mentioned +p not being worth it.

The 9mm ammo quest guy mentioned previously had the 124 hst standard in the top two spots of all his testing.

Might be for nothing, but I'm going to shoot 125gn lead for practice and I'm hoping they have the same/sameish POI.

NOW....

for somebody to throw a wrench in my theory :)

Your money. Get what you like. We are just here putting stuff on the table, so please don't think I'm pushing a specific anything.

I do not work for Federal, ATK, any bullet company.

The Lucky Gunner test is awesome.

Shoot the Bull on Youtube is a fun watch too.

One of the aspects that people don't usually take into a account is how well a round feeds. I personally prefer a more rounded ogive (nose of bullet) as I started with 1911s that had a more dramatic feeding angle than many of the striker fired guns of today. One of the reasons why full round nosed ball ammo feeds more reliably than hollowpoints. You have to function test in YOUR guns from YOUR (limp) two and one handed grip to know how it will work for you.

I love that the AR15 feeds a sharp nosed bullet into a very big hole from an almost straight angle. Even the cheapie ARs tend to feed reliably.

In the end, the Tier 1 hollowpoints are all going to work well enough; it's shot placement that counts the most (after reliability of course)

this list is old, but I trust it implicitly; the 124 +p is on the list as is the 147 HST

The xmacro has a comp, so the +p probably won't be much more recoil than the standard pressure - hotter loads get more of a recoil reduction.

Maybe I'll take your advice and get the +p version. I carry it in everything else and lets face it, the 9mm isn't a powerhouse.

I also carry a 10mm & 500 S&W for griz.....

Given the distances of most defensive shootings, not sure the negative effects of a heavier recoiling caliber really matter.

IMO, what matters most is how quickly you can get the muzzle pointed where you want it... one handed if necessary. (and don't shoot your support arm/hand)

Choice is obvious…
