Bighorn Origin Build Thread

S.o.B! I finally got my action in. Installed the trigger and prefit barrel. Why am I pissed. The front action screw is buggered and won't screw in the action. Thus, I have a barreled action, but no stock.

Post a pic. With a file or grinder if you know what your doing u can easily fix it.

Action: Zermatt Origin LA
Trigger: TriggerTech Primary
Stock: Greyboe Terrain
Bottom Metal: A mix of RedHawk & Remington BDL parts with a Wyatt box
Barrel: Preferred Barrel Blanks 24" 280AI - shouldered
Future Barrel: Criterion 19" 270 Win, threaded, fluted, cerakoted black, barrel nut to save weight. Should arrive in a few months.
Suppressor: Harvester Evo (in ATF jail)
Scope: Meopta Optika6 2.5-15x44 BDC 30mm SFP
Front Action Screw: Bubba'd
Weight Unloaded with Scope: 10.2lbs.

RedHawk Comment: I shot them a note last night after 10pm that the threads on my Front Action Screw were a mess. By 7am Central, they responded that they would send me a replacement.

Obviously, this rig is not svelte set up this way. This is my I don't have to walk far setup. I will probably have the 280 AI barrel cut back to 21" and threaded at some point.
- When the 270 barrel is on the action, it will get a lighter scope and end up in the low 8lb range.

I went with BDL because I was confused by all the inletting talk + I didn't want any rattling steel mags making noise.

Honestly, if I could have figured out a way to have a flush fit DBM without spending a fortune, I would have gone that route.

My rifle is 100% hunting. Guys shooting matches will probably want the ability to load larger magazines.

Hawkins precision makes a nice stuff both in the flush hunter and M5.

Can someone send me pictures of their bolt and how it should be assembled? Bought an action and the guy thought he reassembled it correctly and I want to make sure

Thank you

Like the firing pin assembly or the whole bolt

Thank you sir, the first one works for me the best, he had it put together wrong he had the washer in between the baffle and the head. Which way does the baffle go? Mine has a taper on one side and flat on other?

Taper toward the head, flat against the washer

It is very hard to find a good video on how to reassemble the bolt assembly and put it back into the action. I tried all kinds of search terms and could not find a detailed video on bolt disassembly. Most of the videos showed how easy it was to take it apart and said just do it in the reverse.

I have been told you can reinstall the bolt in the field without tools, but getting my bolt assembly back on the action was very difficult. I did it, but I couldn't do it in the field.

It's literally the same steps but backwards. And yes it's just at easy.

I'll try to make a video today.

Thank you. I only really had trouble twisting the firing pin assembly back onto the bolt. It felt very difficult to get it to twist back - like the spring pressure was really high

Get the lobe lined up, push in, and make sure you twist the right direction.

Can anyone measure the height of the top 20moa rail on an origin short action for me? I'm trying to find a means to raise my optic height while keeping my current scope mount. Curios if the Murphy precision rail will net me anything. Thanks!

Origin with push feed bolt head
26" 1-8 CBI 223 Ackley
PVA barrel nut
TT Primary
CAL 2
Bravo
EBR-7C Viper

Went out to try out the new barrel and start fireforming brass. Wasn't dissapointed with 1/2" groups using cheap 50 gr Dogtown bullets I had sitting around just to get the barrel broke in and make some brass. After 75 quick rds through it and a deep clean I'm excited to see what it can do. Really liking the Origin and a big thanks to Ray for taking care of me.

Push feed bolt head? You’ve got my interest peaked, tell me more.

Like most know, Origins come standard with control round feed. However, I read online where 223AI has some minor feeding problems with a standard CRF head, so ran it by Ray who told me the same. Zermatt makes special push feed heads that they will swap out for you if requested. As far as I've read, only 223 AI really has this problems although I'm sure there are obscure chamberings that might benefit from it as well. I had 0 cycling problems yesterday no matter how fast or slow I ran the bolt.

I'm going to try the CRF bolt with my 223 Ackley pre-fit when it comes.

I’m having trouble with a 223ai build. It Will not feed AI cases reliably. Fire forming is no problem and is very accurate. .3-.4s consistently. I have tried aics mags, mdt mags, multiple bullets at multiple oal. Had Smith chamfer chamber mouth and polish. Still no dice. Rounds bind in the chamber and leave a ring on case body. Must be manually removed. This happens 60% of the time.

It Runs smooth as silk from any magazine with vanilla 223. I assume I have a CRF Bolt head as I bought the barreled action used here.

Is the push feed bulkhead the answer? I have reached out to Zermatt asking the same question. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Thanks

How do you like your barrel from preferred barrel blanks?

How do you like your barrel from preferred barrel blanks?
It has been great actually. It shoots better than I am capable of. I have debated whether I will get another one for my next barrel, or go with something else. The jury is still out on that I guess. There is no reason that I wouldn't use another one, except that other peoples' opinions of them being a low cost barrel company has gotten in my head. But my experience has been great.

Glad to hear that. You can’t beat their production times. I’ve always been a single point cut barrel guy, just because others always told me they give you the best chance of having a good accurate barrel. I have a preferred barrel blanks barrel being chambered here shortly that I’m going to try out.

Let me know how it turns out. I will be interested to hear what you think.

i would like to remove the pinned rail (which I know is possible)and use a traditional two piece mount. If I remove the rail, is the Origin drilled and tapped for any commercial mounts. If so, which one?

I did some research on this at one time and came to the conclusion that two front rem 700 mounts work on the origin. I have not tried this myself though

Talley rings that will supposedly work.

I didn't realize this was a thread until today.

I've had this setup for a few years now, 2018 (or early 2019) was when I received my Origin.
24 inch .223 PVA 1:7 twist (I know it's kind of stupid long). It was actually a blem, so I got it on a good discount.
KRG Bravo Chassis
Harris BRM-S bipod
Triggertech Flat trigger
Nighforce 20 MOA rail
Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25
Vortex rings (medium height?)
I use the Accurate Mag 10 round 223 AICS mags

Love this gun, thinking about building a 300 Blk SBR with an Origin and KRG Bravo for hogs here in Texas. Too many dumb ideas and not enough money.

Can’t argue with the Origin KRG PVA combo, it’s pretty similar to mine.

whats going on here with the old school 2-way color scheme on an Origin
Already beat to the answer above. But yes beadblast from NSS. They had them in stock, was a few week wait for the nitride to be available, so I decided to be different, lol.
Should hopefully look good with the stainless barrel And silver trigger

I was all set to order one of these when the CDG came out so that got my money. I would still like to have one though.

Barrel arrived today! Got it assembled and verified headspace. Hoping to shoot it Saturday

Origin (NSS beadblast)
PVA Osprey 6mm creed 1:7 20" Marksman contour- threaded 5/8"
Krg bravo with minimalist spigot
Triggertech primary "independence"
Trijicon Tenmile 4-24x50
Seekins 30mm rings (low)

I decided to lighten up my original build (24" 280AI and heavy Meopta scope). Barrel nut Criterion barrel with lighter Leupold scope. I am also converting to a DBM H&S Prevision bottom metal. 9lbs as pictured.

I like how the Greyboe stock blends into the old teak wood.
