Clue me in on why GDI sucks.

Look at the Rav4. No CVT in the ICEs and the 2.5 is both direct and indirect injection. The VVT is driven by an electric motor. It's a pretty cool engine.

I forget which Toyota it was, maybe the CH-R? It's a hybrid with a CVT trans and when it went out it was around 10k just for the trans. I only remember this because I have a company that had like 5 of them fail on them just past the 60K warranty was up.

I hear you, they are more complicated systems, a lot more links in the chain. But they are not impossible, just require an different knowledge base. IF you are a DIY'r a simple $50 OBDII scanner can tell you a lot.

I also, now bemoan the fact that I did not open a bike shop right after graduating from college in 1977 (I was a very, very, very late bloomer, finishing college at 28 years of age after travailing at school with dyslexia and earning an all expense paid tour of Southeast Asia complements of a very wealthy uncle :D ).

I still dumpster dive, dig out derelicts, rebuild them and give them away to poor families, and of course maintain our factory bikes.

You guy realize Subaru and Toyota work together,. Toyota owns a portion of Subarus and they use a lot of the same parts and assembly lines on some models. BTW fuck a boxer engine, and direct injection+EGR valves= carbon build up on the Valves and intake.

There is no EGR valve on my boxer engine, and I have both port, and direct injection.

I've been happy with my 21 Rav4, 18 months and 40,000 miles. Granted, it's too new to give a reliability report but no quirks have occurred and I'm getting 29-30 city & 32-33 highway at 75-80mph which sure beats my 06 tundra's 15-17mpg.

OT, but since you are the OP I guess it's not derailing to ask. I'm curious about this observation. The specs on that engine are 445 hp and 910 ft lbs. torque. While I used to drive Chevys from 1982 to 2016 (79 to 05 year models) with no complaints, I switched to a Ford 6.7 diesel in 2017 (450 hp and 935 ft lbs) and again in 2022 (475 hp and 1050 ft. lbs). While both of those are a little more than the 2022 Duramax, they aren't a LOT more. I found both of the Fords to have incredible power and would/will pull a 22,000+ lb heavy-loaded tandem-dual gooseneck with plenty of authority. Unloaded, they will accelerate and pass slower traffic effortlessly, about as fast as you can think about it. The 2022 will actually start to get a little squirrely if you stomp it and maneuver too aggressively to pull out and pass when the turbo kicks in (can feel the back end wanting to come around). Regardless of any Chevy/Ford arguments (reliability/maintenance/personal preference/brand-bias, etc), I would think that the Duramax would be anything but gutless with those respectable power/torque specs. I'm not brand-biased, and would switch back to a GM if it offered the most of what I was looking for when the time comes. Anyone else have this observation?

My little brother, by comparison, has a Titan XD platinum 4x4 that has been deleted and has the Phoenix tuner installed and it can get squirrely in a hurry! I have no dog in the fight and to each their own!

Eh my 2007 was OK except for the paint falling off and the radio catching fire. The doofy little screen with the numbers on it turned black while I was driving down the road and started to smell like smoke lmao.

Diesels will feel lazy compared to a gasser. Especially loaded, you'll feel the torque just smoothly rise up as the turbos spool.

Also, without a tune, the torque management will never let you build the full power to keep the tires planted. They would be undrivable on anything but clean dry roads with that much power.

My 03 with a 100hp tune would blow the tires off non-stop with or without a trailer. Just a bit of pedal and it was spooled and smoking tires.

Tires get expensive, and I ended up pulling the tune for towing because it was so touchy.

CVT is a deal breaker for me! When the ole lady totaled her Nissan Rogue, I replaced it with a frame and transmission under a Frontier.

The truth of this thread is: ANY Cvt is garbage except in a snowmobile. BUT they're worst in the western and rural United States. The cvt manufacturers assume you'll be cruising at 55mph, with stop and go, and some idle time. Occasionally speeding up to 80 to pass someone and then going back to 55.
In reality, if you live where I do and it's an hour to a walmart, 80 Mph speed zone with varying terrain and elevation to get get there, that pos is smoking and the fluid is boiling after 45 minutes with cruise on and a/c set.
Anyone saying they've got over 100k on a soob story doesn't live out here- and it shows. You drive down I-15 and stop at any repair shop along the way and they've got a blown up nissan, subaru, or euro-trash piece if dilapidated misfortune in their gravel. Your Walmart is only an hour away? I’m sorry, still too close to one for my taste. Montana isn’t much different than Wyoming, 135k miles in five years of commuting and road tripping on a CVT at 70-80mph across varying terrain, and still running as well as the day it was bought.

For me it’s still Manual > Auto > CVT, but I’m not discounting CVT all together as a piece of shit that’s going to blow out at 100k. For basic getting from A to B without hammering on it, it does the job just fine.

Rav4 or Rav4 Hybrid. We rented one on a recent trip to Florida. Close to base model gasser. I was blown the fuck out by how peppy the engine felt, the nice growl it had and the fuel mileage was nearly double what my 2016 CR-V gets. I was getting reads of over 40MPG doing 70 down a highway down there. My average MPG in my CRV is like 21.5.

I have been eyeballing the RAV4 TRD off-road and the Adventure but the latter seems scarce.

If you look at them spec by spec they don't really have anything on them that's worth the price tag. Similar with the other TRD trims on other models (aside from Off-Road on the Taco/4Runner which is the lowest trim worth buying). I think its mostly just aesthetics on the Rav4 models for those trims last I looked.

The Hybrid model is even more enticing due to even better fuel mileage and it'll theoretically outlast the gasser.

EDIT: Yeah I just double checked. Adventure and Offroad are just aesthetics and wheels except the Offroad gets a different suspension package.

Don't be afraid to buy a lightly used one either imo.

@Redmanss Don't get me wrong. I like the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness and I think the adding of a real (really puny but better than nothing) trans cooler was a great idea! Not for towing like they advertise but for longevity. Swap it for a Mishimoto or (even better) a Perrin 4 core version with thermostatically controlled fans it could be a real positive for not letting trans fluid temps creep up in to the torque converter killing, reverse clutch melting, fluid burning 275 degree range! IF I could do that mod without voiding a warranty from day one I'd give it a try! Probably add an oil cooler too. Temps here swing from 0 to 120F through the year.

ETA: Follwing of Subie of Japans 36000 mile severe duty schedule for CVT fluid changes is probably a good idea. I do a drain and fill on the Yaris every year aka 35000-ish miles. Still going strong! Maintenance... Who knew? :LOL:

I am all about Toyota certified pre-owned gold vehicles. As for the RAV4... But I NEED my red or orange accents, sir! </S> Nah, I'm sure any of them would be just fine.

Maintenance never hurts, absolutely, but the wife’s car is on its fourth set of tires and original transmission fluid and plugs. I plan on hitting that when things warm up though.

It does minimal idiling except in the winter and next to no stop and go traffic, Wyoming doesn’t exactly have that bullshit, so only sees it on the limited city visits. Fan and heavy duty cooler might be nice if you’re seeing different than I do, but I’m on the side of it being unnecessary and overkill.

I'm less than two weeks away from one year of ownership, approaching 13,000 miles, of a TRD Off Road. I'm not regretting my purchase. It does everything I need it to do and prefer the "uniqueness" the TRD has vs. the plethora of other Rav4s on the road. And there's A LOT of them in my area, Denver Metro. While not a speedster, power is more than just adequate and it returns decent MPGs. I believe I'm at a 'lifetime average' of about 25-26 with a lot of mixed use. Highway mileage can get fairy impressive at well over 30+ MPGs at speed limits of 75MPH and plus. Especially if you can keep it in the 'zone' of the Atkinson cycle. This engine does both and also can do both direct injection or port injection as needed. This also allows the engine to come to operating temps very quickly which is beneficial in Winter months. It's been very good in the snow as well. I attribute most of that to the OEM Falken Wildpeak AT tires the TRD comes with. I HIGHLY recommend getting the Cold Weather package as it comes w/ vented seats in addition to heated seats, steering wheel and wipers.

The non aesthetics that the TRD and Adventure get you are: TRD- minor lift and specific shocks, TRD- Falken Wildpeak AT tires, Both- TRD skid plate, Both- Torque Vectoring AWD, Both- increased towing capacity (3500 vs 1500 all other models), Both- Engine oil cooler, Tranny cooler, and heavy duty alternator, TRD (possibly both)- power lift gate and moon roof. Both- taller roof rails. Both(I believe) Softex interior seats. Both- 10.5" multi media display screen. Both- unique drive modes including mud/sand/dirt/rock. Both- LED lighiting including LED fog lights, interior lighting. Both- Winter/all season floor mats including a full over the back rear cargo mat. Both- 120v power inverter. Both- dual zone HVAC. Both- auto start/stop delete. There may be more that I'm missing at this point and other trim levels may also have some of these features. These are the ones INCLUDED in the, at least TRD, trim package w/o adding any other packages. I DO RECOMMEND the Cold Weather package as it gives you heated steering wheel, heated wipers, and heated AND vented seats. The vented is only available on the TRD, and possibly the Premium. I prefer the TRD rims to any other model and you get the unique grill and badging. I also prefer the unique coloring, stitching, and badging of the seats. I would assume some or many of these are also available on some of the upper trim levels. But these are standard on the TRD and justify its higher MSRP. Especially the towing if you're in need of that feature.
 
I have an 18' Tacoma TRD with 100k. So far, stolen cats, hole punched in fuel tank, in the shop now, because somebody backed into it HARD. Its been in there 9 weeks tomorrow. This my fifth Tacoma. The 16' had an engine leak on the front at 60k, they had to pull engine to replace. The others all made it to 100k and then I traded them in. No issues with the others. Tacoma gas mileage blows!!! Really blows 15mpg average.

When I get it back, its getting new tires and parked. I bought a Crosstrek 12/30/23. So far I love the car, the mileage, and the computer eyesight deal is amazing. I got 100k extended warranty for all the bells and whistles shit. I looked at camary and corrolla for commuter....I was turned off by the lack of updates. It was the same shit as my 18' Tacoma. Im not a techie person at all, but if Im paying the new price for a new car, I want updated shit. The techie shit of 18' or 24' doesnt matter, cause I cant work on either. Plan is to drive it to 100k and trade in. This is my first car ever.....I drove a shit ton of rentals, this was the car I liked.

My brother and friends have all given me shit about my coexist, lesbo, lgbtq car. Dont care. It fit my need. If a car will have an issue, itll be my car.

I have a theory about most shit today. There is so many people flipping jobs, moving, stealing ideas....we are all driving the same shit. I dont think one is any better than the other. It kinda reminds of being a kid....you know how many Genrral Lee hotwheels I had to search through at Kmart to find the one that had a straight decal on the top Lots!!!!

This is my theory on everything, some of us buy the General Lee with the crooked ass decal, some get the one with a straight decal....just never know until you buy it and find out!

I sold my Tacoma for the Rav4. Tacoma was expensive for gas w/ a supercharger and low MPGs.

I watched a Rav4 TRD vs. Crosstrek comparison in deep snow and the reviewer got the Crosstrek much farther. He also preferred the ride of the Crosstrek as the TRD is a bit harsher. I can confirm it's firm but not teeth jarring.
 
Bought my subaru new...
Ate 02 sensors at 68k
Leaky radiator at 89k
Cats clogged at 90k
Timing set/water pump at 102k
4 quick struts at 108k
Clutch grenade at 110k
Head gaskets and valve guides at 124k... ate the valves and shit them out the exhaust.
Ball joints and control are bushing nightmare at 125k
Rear suspension worn out and rattles at 125k
Fuel sending unit shit the bed at 135k
3 wheel bearing and 1 cv axle.
Eats 2qts of oil between oil changes....since 30k

Currently at 146k mi.

Got 28 mpg when new...now averages 22mpg....single owner, i do all my own work.

Great for what it does and fun to drive.... but my toyota walks all over it...140k and not a single hiccup.

No more subarus for me..plus theyre dropping the 6mt...fuck'em.

Toyota only...no other choice.

Most vehicles today use GDI, even the ones that you think don't have it will use a functionally similar system.

And yes Toyota and Subaru have a working relationship and share components/facilities.
