You speak from experience! My mom got the sponge. I suspect strongly that the jars full of stamps were a way to keep me contained. The dry tongue just prolonged it.
I worked at a gas station while in HS which gave out the stamps for all purchases, so if the women did not get their stamps, you had to make a extra trip back to the office to get 'em because they were not leaving until they got their stamps. My mother collected 'em as well, and I never got anything from the "stamp store" even tho I had to help fill the books. LOL

Growing up, I worked at my Dad's gas station. Never issued stamps, but I remember glasses, stickers and even a cardboard model of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module. My Mom collected green stamps. I think she and your mother may be sisters. I got nothing...and was forced to liked it.

Oh yeah! Well this doesn't use electricity, takes up very little space and fits in the palm of your hand. It works every time! After 47 years, I still have mine. When I go, it will be buried with me.

That was an interesting article. I must have the pre-WW2 version as it does not have the locking feature to stay closed, yet I got it in 1976.

anything negative about those S&H green stamps was strictly forbidden in mixed company.

You want to gripe about the stamps? Looky here, I just found another jar and a bunch of empty booklets. Now you can gripe and be productive.

I hated those things. But if there was one running loose in the parking lot of the Piggly Wiggly you can bet your bottom dollar I was sent to retrieve it. To this day I have no idea how that business model worked. Who needed glasses? That’s what those fancy jelly jars were for.
