Good Morning, I've been away for a long time. I'm stumbling into old age with a body I wrecked ( having fun and working hard). Wanted to re-introduce myself and seek advice. Where is the best place to ask advice for a bolt action rifle for up to 600 yds. Thank you in advance. I was looking at the Siete until I saw the crushing reviews here. BTW I live in Florida now, I'll change my bio.

Uh....put a post up in the bolt action subforum?

And I would include a good bit about your intended use and budget....sort of as a minimum.

Cheers

Welcome back to Snipers Hide. Where in Florida? Where will you be shooting?

Your question is so open ended as to not have a beginning. 😁 But seriously, you have a caliber preference, price range, style, weight preferences?

Obviously here on the Hide is the best place to ask. As far as what specific sub forum, try bolt action rifles and be as specific as is possible when asking your questions. There’s so much to choose from that it can get confusing if you don’t have a starting place.

Edit: I’m a slow typer. I can see that Baron already beat me to it.

OK Baron23 thank you, and thank you lash. Back to the intro--- I shoot at Port Malabar R&PC. I'm an old man at close to 71 and will shoot up to 600 yds. Money?? I expect with glass up to 4k. I don't know the cal. I need. I will head over to the bolt action sub-forum, I did need that advice BTW, to go to the Bolt section. Let me say that if you see an older fellow and he needs help, perhaps you should just be gentle and help, which you both did. I didn't ask to become old it just hit me. Do not ask the Lord to walk a mile in my shoes... I didn't like it and neither would you.. Headed toward Bolt sec.

The easy button is 6BR if you will be reloading. If not, then your typical choices will be .223, .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor based on ammo availability. All very capable at 600 yards and in.

Nobody asked to be old but if were lucky we all get there 👍

Thanks Rooster
Sorry my sarcasm font got stuck.

Your advice from the first two posters were fairly spot on. You will get a smorgasbord of answers in your quest. For your proposed budget, I think you will find something more than capable of your wishes. Good luck with your search and welcome from NC.

Ruger Precision in 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor Vortex scope bipod of your liking then get some ammo from Target Sports USA. Time to head to the range.

Id go 308 easy enough / cheap enough to shoot 600 yards or further if you get the chance . and a long barrel life much longer than a creedmoor
. best of luck with what ever gun you decide to get .

There is nothing wrong with the good old .308 out to about 800 yards, it will EASILY do what you ask, however, it is so much more pleasant to shoot the 6.5 CM. Personally, I wouldn't do the 6mm, it is a fine cartridge, but barrel life is pretty short.
6.5 isn't fantastic in that regard, but shooting the 130's is just so easy.

Edit to add: when saying 6mm, I mean the 6 CM. the 6 br and 6gt are much easier on barrels and are an excellent option

You dont lie, i love my 243win with a 1-8 twist and a 26" barrel but she is a temporary girlfriend compared to a 308win barrrel.

Good old Rem700 (preferably 5R) in 308. Ditch the trigger for a Timney. The barrel may outlast you, and same cannot be said about the other calibers. Mine are all half MOA. Oh, and get a 22LR bolt gun too, just because.

Well, since the .308 crowd have placed their arguments, I’ll throw one in for .223 if barrel life is all you are after. A 7 twist barrel will be glorious out to 600 yards with 70-80-ish grain bullets. Lower ammo costs, less recoil for those long sessions having fun, can serve double duty for varmint eradication, and plenty of barrel life.
