22 ARC

It’d be a different bolt face.
I’ve never re-bolt-faced, but I suspect it’d be easier/cheaper to re-barrel a 6.5 Grendel.
I’m sure there are others here with a better qualified opinion.
Why re-barrel a Grendel? That makes no sense to me. Hornady makes the same V/T round for the Grendel. It's not 62 grains like the 22 ARC, it's 100 grains (80 grains for the 6 ARC).

A Grendel should probably shoot a 100 grain bullet close to 2900 from a 20-inch AR, and most definitely higher from a hand loaded bolt gun.

All this with better wind resistance and bigger impact on target than a .224, Great 'yote round IMHO. The bullet design will hold velocity longer as well.

Still, I love the idea of this 62gr 22 ARC on a suppressed AR. Prairie dog town eliminator :).

The 22 ARC will stick around, 6 Max will fade into the abyss.
6MAX looks to be a 77SMK 5.56 beater outer and that's about it. SOLGW talking that it will rival the 6ARC? Just how the fuck do they think that happens within this space & time continuum? 6MAX might have got off the ground if the 22 ARC didn't drop, the 6MAX release date would have hit on time, and more than one barrel manufacturer for 6MAX.

Yeah it looks like the 6x45 to me and I just don’t see how it can compete with the 6 ARC.

Marketing lies. I'm willing to bet primers pockets gone and/or the primer the fist loading of a 6MAX to rival the 6ARC. They need to knock that shit off and stick to the, another fun 6 to beat the 77SMK.

Does anyone have or know of any realistic figures on barrel life with the 22ARCs?? I am hoping they might get 3000 or so "Accurate" rounds out of one. That is my attraction to them....

Go to the 7:50 mark in this video and they talk about barrel performance/life.

Just a heads up. I was at the Hodgdon website doing some reloading research this morning and found this :).

Speeds are mostly in the 3200s for the 62gr scirocco at AR Pressures:

Sons of Liberty put out that they’re making 5.56 and grendel/arc bolts out of aermet 100 now. I’m excited at the thought of 88 and 90’s at ~2800+. I wonder if better bolts will enable pushing closer to bolt gun loads or will the extensions start failing?

I think they need to focus on having product in stock, to include 6max barrels.

Wonder what brass availability will be like. Can you run a 6.5 grendel in a 22arc die and be done? I assume you cant use a 6arc brass because it is too short?

Yep i found them but im asking about brass availability and how to form it from either 6arc or 6.5 grendel.
If it's anything like 6 ARC availability from Hornady is going to suck!

When I form 6 ARC from Lapua 6.5G the loaded necks measures .001 bigger on the Lapua. I'd imagine going from 6.5 - .224 will take 2 steps & add close to another .001" neck diameter. Might start causing problems unless you want to neck turn it.

This is the biggest reason why I'm not at all excited for the 22 ARC.

Do a search for 6 ARC brass, Nada!

Thats exactly what im afraid of. Can get everything but the brass. And thats a pretty essential piece of the puzzle. And i aint neck turning

Starline brass is fine. They take backorders and are filled in a week or so. Peterson is making brass in 2024

Starline 6 ARC brass is out of stock and cannot be back ordered currently.

That seems like it would be the best bet to convert but isn't the shoulder shorter on the 6 ARC? So false shoulder or seat @ jam for fire form load.
Sounds like a PITA.

Roger, sorry I wasn't clear. I was talking about the lack of 6 ARC brass availability (including Starline) & thinking about avoiding the potential thick neck issue on the 22ARC.

6.5G - 6ARC & the +.001" neck hasn't caused me any problems in 2 different barrels. Not sure if that will be the case for 6.5G - 22ARC?

Anyone able to post a picture of a 22br next to a 22arc. Just thinking on the bolt gun side of things. Going to do one in an ar and give it a whirl but if I’m going to have brass, dies etc then curious if to do it in a bolt also. Did a Valkyrie in a bolt throated out a mile and it’s freekin amazing. Maybe this would be even better throated out. Wonder how much case capacity is to be gained in an aics mag as opposed to fitting in an ar mag. It sure did make the Valkyrie great. Anyone else dug into this at all?

I didn't take a pic, and I didn't measure anything. But I did set a 6 ARC case next to a .22BR case and look at it (heavy R&D ).
What I noticed was that base-to-shoulder, the ARC was a SMIDGE longer than the BR. The full length Grendel case (that the .22 version uses) should add another .030" to that dimension.
I want a Howa Mini .22 ARC really BAD! My 19lb. .22BR needs a 10lb baby brother! If I was going to build on a standard action (Bighorn), I'd just do another .22BR.

If adding at least another.030 to the case you would think you could run it as fast as a br with less pressure. I can’t help but to think the 22arc throated out in a bolt gun could be wicked cool.

I am stoked for 22 ARC!

Just getting into all this stuff and have been blessed to only know the new breed cartridges. First was a 6.5 CM then a 300 PRC and now a 22ARC... will round out my precision bolt collection nicely.

Was waffling on which lighter round to get into and was very near setting up to load for 6 ARC bolt and AR. Tracking same plan now but with 22 ARC. Should be a blast to shoot PRS in a 10 pound set up!

this mini action idea seems cool but probably leaning toward a coup de gras and a schneider barrel at 22"ish

Another flash in the pan like .22 Nosler?
Just curious, not looking for an argument. I have a 6ARC in quality carbine configuration and am only modestly impressed, at most. Good mid- range cartridge. I took the scope off and have irons (plastics) for now, but thinking red dot.
Very interested in .22 ARC performance and first hand experience with shorter barrel, 16"-18"".

What was the last cartridge Hornday put out that was a "flash in the pan"?

The Nosler just pushed the same .4 g1 and under bullets faster (given AR mag constraints). I’m sure it had its fans, but I never could feel the love.

The ARC/Grendel case grants more room in the mag (again, AR), ergo, flinging longer, higher BC bullets.

Outside of an AR or a “mini” bolt action, it’s not a round I’d care about, but in those platforms, pretty badass.

Are you sure?

Most don’t care about the Valkyrie but throated out to aics mag length it’s dynamite.

A friend is sending me two rounds today so I can play around and see if there’s gains to be made if running it in a bolt gun. I’ll post what I determine for what it’s worth.

@stoner69

if your a reloader and you want to build that cdg you should consider what I find and have your smith possibly throat it out a little bit. If not a reloader then no worries. I’m super stoked on this cartridge for a bolt gun.

Once you take Grendel/ARC out of an AR and Mini it loses it's appeal compared to GT. Bolt faces and magazines being two major factors. 22ARC makes a lot of sense in an AR but very little in a full size bolt action.

Good point but wonder if setup properly for a bolt how it compares to a gt or like talking about earlier a br. Knowing the support being “Hornady” as far as availability for brass especially and ammo if it makes it a viable option.

Yep exactly i will continue to run my 223 ai. If my 700 had a ppc bolt face then i might runs arc's/ grendel. I also shoot 6bra loading around 30gr of varget. Dont think you can beat a 6mmbr over 6mm arc in a bolt gun

Bolt heads are available for most real actions so that’s not an issue and mag options have come a long way also thanks to the 6 arc. MDT for example has a mag for that and the popularity of what we all expect the 22arc to be I would think mags won’t be an issue moving forward either.

You're going to be constantly stepping on it to try to keep up in the speed department. I'd rather use a bigger case that doesn't require creative feeding solutions and cruises on low RPMs.

Let me start off by saying I have no interest in the 22 ARC, especially when my 6 ARC can shoot 58-108gr bullets I don't see I need for it.

That said, just because more speed is available in another cartridge doesn't mean a short action bolt 22 arc or bolt 6 arc doesn't make sense. I'm building a bolt 6 arc instead of a 6 creed or other - I already have a ton of 6 arc shit, and ballistically it does everything I need it to. Top that off with great barrel life and I'm happy to build one in a short action.

When you get tired of being hamstrung by powder selection and low velocity you'll get to buy a new bolt/bolthead and magazines.

Keep up with what? 22 creedmoor? Way less recoil is what the goal is. I actually think with it throated out a little you can load mild as far as pressure and it will be doing the same as say a br. I’m surely not arguing with anyone just thinking outside the box. My bolt Valkyrie for instance throated out is sending 88eldm in the 2,900 range and the primers look the same as when I put them in. Makes me excited for what the arc could do.

Guess that depends on what your velocity goals are. If you can easily get an 88 or 85.5 close to 3k fps with almost no recoil then for competitive shooting you’re going to be jamming! Especially if barrel life is high.

Creedmoor?

No.

GT or BR. The normal 308 bolt face equivalents.

Of course.

A 6ARC doesn't make sense when you can do the same thing with less constraints with a 6BR.

But like Greg said, "You can milk anything with nipples."

Ya I don’t own either so not sure what a mild velocity is for those two. Maybe the arc gets close with much longer barrel life? Idk. Friend of Frank got like 8k out of a Valkyrie barrel. My bolt head is a simple swap so that’s irrelevant to me and I’m sure others as well.

What’s typical barrel life from a 22 gt and br? I haven’t a clue personally.

Also the 22 arc case is already better for a bolt gun than the 6arc case. They are not the same.

TBH, I didn't think the 6 arc made sense in a gas gun when it came out, from the get-go. I had messed with 6 mm ARs years before and they always disappointed velocity wise. I had a 22 Grendel years before the 22 Arc came out. For long range AR-15 size gas guns, that is the best cartridge going. (ARC version or Grendel version: potato ~potato)That's why the 6 arc as a tweener just doesn't have any advantages to the cartridge smaller than it or bigger than it in the gas gun. If you want range, do the 22 Grendel/ ARC. If you want hunting bullets, do the 6.5 Grendel.

If you want to launch the same bullets in a bolt gun, the optimum cartridges already exist. But people are going to do what they do. Almond milk lattes. Low carb tortillas. Skim milk. Sugar-free ice cream. Arken scopes. The platypus 2011. 5" barreled 5.56mm AR's. You name it. The world is your oyster. Do what you want.
