    Who here reloads this caliber?

This is my first step above 44mag and am needing suggestions on the best powder, for accuracy, and Bullets used. No load data needed.

    Thanks!

For mellow plinking ammo Unique and Universal Clays under 300s is nice.

For full power ammo, Vhit N-110 under 320-350 gn bullets is about perfect for accuracy/recoil/muzzle flash.

Full power 240-260 gn bullets suck. Brutal sharp/harsh recoil. The heavies kick more, but the recoil impulse is nowhere near as harsh.

I am shooting a FA model 83 that is almost 30 years old. When I get a case of the flinches, I toss in the 45 ACP cylinder.

I almost bought a Bighorn lever gun in 454. I ended up with the 500 instead.

I'll add H-110 to the list.
All of my old jacketed hunting bullets are no longer available, but I'm sure the modern ones are just as good.

H-110 with a gas checked cast bullet 325 + grains. For plinking, Unique and a cast bullet around 250.

    Which pistol did you buy?

Forgot to ask the same question as KYAggie... In for the review of the new pistol. What pistol is this?

Best to work your way up and acclimate, don't just copy someone's hair chest load. As well, when / if you get used to them, you need to stay on your game, stay practiced for it to be of any use.

Even in my best days, I never pushed towards the top loads with the 454. I found I didn't enjoy it much past 300gr @1600fps. (And I was shooting lots of monster 500 Linebaugh loads at the time.) Now days.... 300-320 @1400 is about the most fun I want in that area and I do that in a 5 shot 45Colt. (I should sell my 454 I guess.)

I'm not trying to dissuade you from taking the journey and mastering it. But most people who climb the mountain find there's nothing up top and come part way back down. lol

My wife ordered me a Taurus Raging Hunter 6.75" for my birthday. I wanted a Ruger Super Redhawk >sigh<

Hmmmmm, I’m not sure how this round will fell in a double action. I’ve found it’s comfortable in a single action, mine is a FA Premier grade with a 4.75” non-ported barrel. I bought it used in 1996; my guess is the previous owner shot one cylinder full and sold it as it looked new and warranty paperwork had not been filled out. My favorite load has 335 LBT’s clocking 1450 fps. Like cas6969 mentioned, I’ve gone higher and come back down to reasonable.

I look forward to the range report!

2400 is my favorite powder for 454 Casull. Used a lot of it shooting silly wets.

I shot a Raging Bull in 454 when they were fairly new (2000-2001 ish?). I didn't find it objectionable at all, the big rubber grips and porting made it quite shootable, though loud. At the time I recall thinking I might buy one if I were to ever run across one.

So far I have laid hands on the following:

    200 Winchester brass new
    1000 srp magnum primers
    Hornady 300gr XTP Magnum bullets
    VV N110 powder

That will be enough to get started. I have more bullets on order. Will get some H110 when I find it.

7.5" ported FA Premier here (mine has the bushinged forcing cone so it's an old one). H110 is all I use for the 454 loads and I stay around 300 grain bullets. It can be entertaining with 28+ grains of H110. I'll leave the heavy loaded 325+ grain bullets to y'all.

However, when i use my own cast gas check bullets, I'll tone it down somewhat. Better yet, when I want plenty of power and accuracy too, I'll drop in the 45 Colt cylinder.

H110 has been great for me. I have also used AA1680 for some heavier bullet loads. It provides good velocity without too much pressure but is very "flashy."

For mild loads I use 45 colt cases and True Blue. Very pleasant plinking loads

That particular bullet has been very accurate for me in my FA83. The only cases I've used are Starline SRP and I use either a 450 or a Rem 7 1/2 primer.

Mine is scoped with a Leupold 4x and thinks it's a rifle. I also have 83's in 357 and 44, both scoped. They shoot as accurately as the 454/45. The "book" loads don't really apply to the 357 and 44 in a FA83...

I plan to buy some Starline brass as soon as it is available. I got what I could find and have had good luck with WW brass in the past.
