Looking to build a 18" or 20" SPRish Ar. Anyone running the Proof Carbon Barrels? How are they treating you?
Will be using this for hunting and banging steel with 77 TMK diet.

Thanks

I have .308 and .223 on Seekins receivers and they have been great. Sub moa as expected.

I have a 24” 6.5CM that’s a laser, and a 16” 223 Wylde that still needs some break in. Time will tell on the little one.

I've built dozens in all calibers. Everyone is 100% happy.

With my 16" Proof CF and an 8X LPVO, I shot this recently at 200 yards.

Thanks for the replies guys. Trying to get a parts list put together now. Pretty sure going with seekins receivers, now to figure out the rest.

Have 20” Grendel and 20” +2 gas 6.5 CM that are both lasers. Have built 2 more of each for friends that extremely pleased with performance. These are all CF, though would expect same results from their SS barrels. Owen at Front Range Precision has been a great source for all.

14.5” 556/223 Proof Carbon, it’s a 1/2-3/4 moa shooter. Very pleased.

My 16" AR Proof CF is new and having some feed issues but I haven't come to the conclusion it was the barrel. Have been trying to find the right gas/buffer. However, it's accuracy is spectacular.
I have a couple more Proof AR CF (14.5/18) yet to be built but impressed so far.
My 6.5 Creedmoor Short Action barrel is fairly new but limited rounds, the initial ones are very accurate.
Have yet to find the perfect load yet, but I am sure it will come.
Nothing bad I can say about Proof CF.

I use an 18" PCF on my main hunting AR.
It shoots accurately, delivers higher velocity than any other 18" AR barrel in 5.56 than any I have tested.
That being said I would not consider one for target work or "banging steel" for several reasons beyond the fact that I don't 'bang steel".
In target games weight is your friend. You will go through a lot of ammo and I don't think the CF barrel will hold a zero as well when it gets heated up. They cost more without gaining anything for the target shooting.

They are great for hunting imho and really only on calibers that have long barrel life otherwise the added expense isn't worth it.

In addition to that, they don't seem to hold up to a high volume firing schedule.

I have an 18” 6.5CM that shoots great.

I’m curious what you guys consider high volume firing? I’ve not seen any issues with POI shift but I’m also not dumping mags. I have fired 60+ rounds in a sitting.

I'm happy to offer a data point you'll find interesting.

I had the chance to borescope a Proof CF .223 Wylde 18" barrel in a rifle I built for a competitive shooter, with a well documented 5000 rounds through it. It exhibited just the slightest hint of throat erosion beginning at the leade, with no heat checking at all yet apparent. In other words, it looked like a barrel with I'd WAG 1000 rounds through it.

I jokingly accused him of only shooting girlie loads through it. He said on the contrary, they were all 50 grain and 77 grain handholds at peak pressure.

I'm currently shooting these Proof CF barrels in various gas guns - all suppressed - over the last several years:

16" .223
18" .223
14.5" 6mmARC
18" 6mm ARC
16" .308

I'm not putting a tremendous amount of rounds through any of them. None have more than 2000 rounds through them. All I can say is:

They're crazy lightweight. And to me, an incredible novelty - just great fun to use. As a function of my ever increasing age and awareness, lighter rifles have more and more appeal.

They're gorgeous inside, like a Craddock Bartlein. Amazingly smooth chamber and throat, and seemingly getting better as the years pass.

They all shoot well for me. And they're all holding up just fine. These barrels clean up easily, when I can make myself do it.

The 6mmARC barrels (and guns!) get dirty faster than any of them. But, my guess is we have Hornady secret squirrel powders to thank for that. I'm not complaining one bit about Hornady 6mmARC accuracy, velocities, or SDs, though. I'll cope just fine with Hornady 6mmARC factory ammo, thank you. The combination of Proof CF 6mmARC barrels and Hornady 6mmARC ammo yielding sub-seven pound small block AR' rifles good for 1000 yards makes it hard to reach for anything else on a gorgeous Arizona day.

Your mileage may vary.

Finishing up my build here in the next couple of weeks hopefully. Went with the 18" proof. I can not see my self doing more than 60 rounds a go and no mag dumps so not to worried about it getting to warm. S far just handling what I have together I am glad I went carbon. The gun is still going to be on the heavy side for what I wanted with the parts used.

Thanks for all the replies.

My 16“ Proof CF AR I built is a hammer. First 10 rounds it was awesome, the next 120 rounds or so sucked as it had a burr at the gas port (took pictures after about 50 rounds) and wouldn’t shoot anything under 1.5 MOA. 120-150 got a lot better and after 150 it became a laser beam shooting hammer!
