Anyone using USOptics?

I am still drawn to the looks of their ocular housing and EREK-style elevation dial...but since they cost a lot (even with discount) I'm not sure I'm courageous enough to jump into one again with stories like the one just posted above.
I've had five FDNs and still have 3. To my eyes they resolve targets a smidge better than my ATACR 7-35 at distance. My only complaints I can come up with are:
  • The 25x has a tight eyebox (52mm objective). Less of an issue with the 17x.
  • The 25x minimum parallax is 75yds
  • The turrets are difficult to actually understand vs the set screw types that are common these days. The ER3K zero stops can be hard to understand, and the center screw that lets you move the erector independently of the turret position is confusing if you don't understand the design.
  • The FDN 10x's reticle is just too thick. They should reevaluate their reticle designs in the 10x to at least offer the MHR from their TS line. I'm a big fan of floating center dots.
  • Low light performance isn't anything special, especially on the 25x with the 52mm objective.
From what I've read here, and on other forums, the SN3s of yore are solid. Around 2009ish there were tracking issues, and they revised their internals around 2011, and dropped the bespoke stuff to focus on quality control, and I've read that they implemented ISO 9001 standards around the same time. A lot of the guys who dismiss USO seem to have had SN3s in the era of tracking issues and bespoke stuff. Seems like dust in the scopes has been a known issue from time to time. 8541 Tactical had an issue with grease bumping loose onto a lens of his LR-17 and USO fixed it with no questions asked. C_Does also had an old MR-10 that sprung a leak and got fogged up. US Optics took care of the issue promptly. I bought an FDN 25x used here on the hide that some knucklehead had removed the grease on, and dust got into the turret and it felt super grindy (Lake Bonneville moon dust screws up all kinds of stuff). USO took it back no questions asked and reworked the turrets to like-new condition.

Like Jake said, the B-Series had issues with people over tightening their turrets and stripping. I had considered buying one used, and called USO to ask about warranty coverage on the B-Series, and what Kyleigh told me is that they launched with aluminum internals on the B turrets and had issues. They switched to steel later on, and the issues went away, but the damage had been done and they went back to an updated EREK design (ER3K) that featured a zero stop, but did away with the locking turrets and tooless zeroing in the B-Series. Kyleigh told me that if I bought a B Series here on the hide and it had issues, they'd take it in and replace the turrets with FDN turrets, free of charge, as part of standard warranty servicing.

A lot of people had bad experiences long ago, and justifiably steer clear of the brand. I won't blame them. I'm never going with GA Precision again, despite their customer service being stellar, and my experience likely being a unicorn nightmare. I get it with guys never going back to USO. In the mid 20-teens it seems like USO was the cheaper alternative to a S&B for an FFP scope that could track, until Nightforce's ATACR series started to take market share along with the Razor HD II and K624i.

My gunsmith and another shooting buddy both run Razor 3s, and when I let them get behind my FDN 25x at 20x power, they couldn't believe it was only 20x. The eyepiece is closer to your eyes, and I get the same amount of information at 18x that they do with their Razor 3s at 22x, but with more FOV. If you watch C_Does' reviews comparing the MR-10 to a Leupold MK5-2-10 and pause it when the scopes are both at 10x, the picture that comes through (and he compares scopes at the actual eye relief and doesn't crop the pictures to match) on the USO is legitimately 25% bigger than the Leupold. While on paper, the scopes have equal magnification, what you end up seeing is far, far different. People like to dog on the tunneling at low power, but they're surprisingly more forgiving of the S&B PMII and ATACR series despite their having the same "shortcoming".

Jake Vibbert, Brett Barnes, and Ken Sanoski have won a lot of matches with USOs in the last few years. You don't win matches with gear that doesn't work. People like to b!tch about Leupold tracking issues and MK5 horror stories, but the amount of guys winning matches with MK5s shows that they're capable optics regardless. And that's coming from me, an avid MK5 hater. Again, you don't win national matches with gear that doesn't work.

These are uncropped, and representative of what the sight picture will look like to your eyes size wise. This difference in size is what I notice every time I look through a USO FDN vs other scopes, especially MK5s.

Feel of view is awesome on the Foundations. The older Erek scopes had even more FOV. Pretty nice to be able to see everything and find targets a little quicker when needed. Although there are a couple scopes which are now approaching the real world field of view numbers.

Unfortunately a lot of the stuff we read online is just not factual. And people do fudge the numbers on FOV and eye relief etc.

I also don’t think anyone needs to apologize. Every is different and has different opinions.

What you will find, typically, is that accomplished individuals in the precision rifle world rarely will bash on anything. And for good reason. Why bash a company? There are actual Americans and people with families that are trying to earn a living and afford to live in the crazy world.
Companies like USO are small. They are veteran or American owned. Even just the negative hate…..it’s truly inappropriate when you think about the bigger picture.

I am just a fan of a rising tide raises all boats. Some people want to drain the water under one boat because they want them to crash and burn into the rocks. And that may happen, but it’s also not good for all the other boats. Eventually they will sink as well. Why?? Because after the first boat is sunk, do you think a person that was constantly complaining will just say they are happy now? Or will they find another company they don’t like? Exactly. They will always complain about something. By no means am i pointing a finger at anyone. Just saying that is reality until they change their heart to be positive.

Not trying to preach, but if you made it this far good on you!! Glass is half full in my world!

Hopefully the families of the folks you mentioned who work in the scope world for a living can continue to draw a paycheck so they can eat.

To answer the original question, yes there are still some shooters running USO optics.
Not as many as other brands, but still some. Top tier shooters like Jake are proving that their optics can still get the job done.

I would suggest that current USO offerings may not be the best choice for all shooters.
If you have one and like it rock on 👍
If a person was looking for recommendations on the best bang for their optics $$ there are several brands worth considering.

Cmon man. Everyone has a half a dozen scopes that were given to them so they can just swap them out when 1 shits the bed.

Whats good for a guy being given a bunch of product and paid to shoot is obviously good for the guy spending his hard earned money who can only afford 1 scope.

In the weeks I offered up a cert for free here, Not one person has reached out and asked for it. That tells you what the shooting public thinks of USO and people speak with their checkbooks.

I still would like to hear an explanation how a rangefinder is the issue when you are shooting a match with 10 other dudes in squad who all have rangefinders and everyone is talking to verify the correct range to target. One of the most accomplished shooters in the sports history does not realize that maybe his data is bad? Did everyone else also have a broken rangefinder that defaulted to the same wrong yardage? I shot the same match and the Ranges were all within a few yards, verified with a PLRF in the match book. So according to Jake, there would be a discrepancy between the match booklet range and his range/data on every stage and there was no thought to ask the rest of the squad if they are getting the same info? If you did, after the first stage or two where you are missing and they are hitting, you do not think "Maybe their data is right if they are cleaning it and I am missing" . When the other shooters say the range in the booklet is correct, you still use your bad rangefinder datat? How many stages would it take the most accomplished PRS shooter to figure out? Both of the Munns are on this website FYI. In the 10 hours out in that range shooting , He never talked to rest of squad who would clearly have different data/range? Whats the first thing you do when something doesn't make sense be it Data or range? Its not the AG cup, these supersquads are chatting more than teenage girls.

The ignorant non shooters here who don't understand how a match works might believe that shit. People who were there and understand how match flow works and squad dynamics, find it really hard to believe. This was never a callout but don't piss on us and tell us its raining. Better off to just be silent about it.

Its clear some peoples lively hoods are tied to this sport and industry. It puts food on their table so they are protective of it. I would probally lie too when my paycheck is tied to it.

This shit is a money pitt to most of us. We don't have to sugar coat shit, hold back or protect sponsers from themselves. We are free to speak the unfiltered truth, no matter how many assholes it chaps.

Zero. Why would I?

I had issues with USO in the past like most of the OG shooters who have been on this website since it was founded. We all lived through it.

I used to have conversations with the owner about moving out of Cali in the 00's to save his business. I guess he wanted to be close to the people grinding his glass. He used to be a regular poster on this site. Couldn't take it when people bitches about their issues. Company got sold off and sold Chinese garbage oem shit for years, Using the "USO Brand" like so many corporate raiders due to with American companies that had a reputation.

Their designs do not look much different from what we were running 2 decades ago. Maybe they figured out how to make a scope with a reticle that doesn't fail, electronics that don't shit the bed and a way to keep them from being full of debris.

The best indicator of future performance is past performance. Past performance is shit. Company is sold of to a bunch of randoms who has not updated shit really. Maybe they fixed the process but you are still looking at old ass tech with ancient reticles that no one wants.

Why would anyone take a risk on them when you can pick from a dozen, proven performers? As soon as you buy one it looses half its value as no one will buy them used. You can barely give them a way.

Then a year ago one of the sponsored guys tells me to my face at a match he had to replace the scope because it shit the bed on day 1. Turns out now it was a "rangefinder" issue that doesn't add up. You see what people tell you in person or on the phone or in text is much different than what they say in public forums. There is money and livelyhood on the line.

Oh But Jake and Ken shoot them so they are just wonderful. Everyone ignore everything I said and appeal to authority. No conflict of interest or anything here. Please go buy up the used USO on the market so the poor owners who lost their ass can salvage the loss.

do you shoot PRS often?

This is amazing. One of the most below average shooters in the country telling one of the best shooters in the country how things work at a match.

And flat out calling him a liar.
Were you there? Then feel free to shut the fuck up and go make some more bad business decisions. Maybe you can start a 3rd supported account by the end of the year.

Most of your posts I read on this website appeal to authority to the tune of “If it isn’t used by PRS champions then it is crap.”

In this thread you seem to shift to “Just because a PRS champion uses it doesn’t mean it isn’t crap.”

I am still confused.

He just likes thinking he knows things. Always talking about who he knows, what this guy did, what that guy does. Notice how none of these people he likes to name drop ever back him up?

He's a PRS Top Shooter groupie. Hoping they'll let him in their bus after a match.

Well that's the pot calling the kettle black if I ever heard it.

Watched your YouTube video yesterday (or the day before). I appreciate your effort. Unfortunately for me with my wife and kids shooting the rifle I was looking to get an optic on - eyebox and eye relief need to be more forgiving.

One day I'll build a rifle with a GAP camo McM A5 and FDN-17 all for myself...just because I'm stuck in 2008. I can live with that too. :D

I’ve owned a few of their optics over the years. LR17 was a great optic for me several years ago but I needed (wanted) more magnification so I got a hold of a B25. My eyes are not nearly as trained as many of you but the glass was fantastic for me. Overall, the B25 was fine for me but I agree there are better options in today’s market.

Only reason I’ve recently ventured away from USO was because I had to eventually have the LR17 sent back for service, due to a gritty elevation turret. They fixed it in a reasonable amount of time after confirming something had broken, but I had to eat the shipping, which wasn’t exactly cheap.

I’ve since gone to Vortex gen 3 strictly due to warranty and hassle free service.

Now, I think people in this thread are talking about two completely different classes of optics. Their flagship (foundation, b-series, OG series) are significantly different than their TS models. It’s like comparing the vortex gen 3 to a strike eagle. Nothing wrong with either, but expectations need to be realistic based on use and price point.

I’d say it says more about what the shooting public thinks of you. They don’t want to deal with you. Even for free.

Easy now Mr.60. There’s literally zero reason for you to have such a high opinion of yourself.

Kinda weird the 50% certs get listed for $300 on the regular when vortex 30% off MAP (50% off, let's be real) go for $100. No wonder they don't move.

A 50% cert for something like thunderbeast will save you like $800-1200.
A 55% Cert for Swaro will save you like $1500+
A 30% MAP vortex cert from EO saves you $300.

A 50% USO cert will save you like $1500 but the resale is like 50% or less so they are worthless becuase no one wants uso junk.

That's why they sell for what they sell for

Not quite. Buying direct from USO for full price is like paying MSRP. A JVCR FDN 25X costs $2946 via Eurooptic, vs $3649 direct from USO's website, and can be as low $2400 depending on the reticle.

That 50% cert brings the same JVCR scope down to $1900, so it's basically a 30% off, same as a Vortex cert when buying a Razor 3. That 30% off MAP from Euro for Vortex (prior to this month's price hikes) down from $3k to $2200. That's a lot more than saving just $300.

There's no reason to pay MSRP on a scope in 2024. Don't do it for USO, don't do it for Vortex, etc.

No. Anyone with a pulse can get a razor for 2400 from EO. Anyone who pays a cent more is a literal moron. Thats why they sell for $100. It only saves $300.

No one wants uso certs they are worthless.

The market dictates these prices...not your feelings.

You should learn the market before trying to preach about it.

Is that why you offered yours for free, despite listing it at $300+?
Look at the date it's listed. I offered it free multiple times in this thread. No one wants it. They get left on the prize and get thrown out with the trash after the match. If you actually bought and sold these certs you would know what they are worth and why. Someone gave it to me for free after a free for all on the table. Not like im trying too hard to sell it. It's gona go in trash pretty soon or used as packing material

Again you are wrong just admit it and move on.

I've bought and used 2 of these certs, and at far more reasonable prices.

You have all lost your collective minds - this brand trash- that brand used to be trash - this guy don’t know shit - that guy shoots like shit this guy took a paid sponsorship.

Meanwhile I’m shooting lights out - sub moa all day even when I don’t do my part with the New UTG bug buster line of scopes - from the fixed 4 to the 4-16. They fucking rock AND have 36 color options for the illumination. Come with rings and are cheap as fuck on eBay .

Come on y’all - everyone knows Burris and Vortex and luppy gold ring are SHIT!

Hello, fellow minefield enthusiasts.

What's up with that super short cheek rest?
I cut it down to fit in the pocket under my cheek and not get in the way with my ear pro when squared up on the gun. Not advised for Magnums.

No Time behind newer ones, have an ST-10, bought off of here 15yrs ago? EREK knobs, tracks fine, nice glass. Also an SN-3 that was made for me 1.5-6, a great LPVO, probably 18-20yrs ago

I sold one just like that years ago, would love to get it back but that's OK. I'd get one if I saw one but it did have a few disadvantages, such as the height on it....the weight. Optics were the best though!!

Probably going with a Vortex Viper, close out at Sportsmans for 299 LOL
