Local PO that helped me get a new CCW permit when my old job cancelled mine out of spite was a gunnery officer on the Missouri or Iowa , I forget which.

Doesn’t matter which you are legend if you served on either.

That was show of force exercise with the Enterprise battle group in 1989. I was stationed on board USS Blue Ridge, and got some pretty good pictures on that glorious day. Seeing two Iowa class battleships firing full nine gun broadsides was incredible. I got to tour the Enterprise when she pulled into Subic. I am slowly in the process of scanning all the negatives I have before they all go bad.

I not sure if I shared these, but a flock of F-22s trying out for thunderbirds, March 24 2019.

I have shared these before, just not sure if on this forum or not. In all my days of watching the near daily airshow, the first and only time I have seen 4 raptors in formation. They are normally in loose 2 ships.

I worked at a warehouse off the end of runway 1, when they would do their unrestricted takeoffs. Generally by the time they went vertical, the AB would be pointing at the building. Wish I had some shots of that.

Is that the story of buying these surplus, his crashing one and the Sgt or whomever writing it off and letting him take another?
Yes that is correct, he worked out a deal with the base commander at Altus AFB. He ended up getting a better plane, and was able to get many additional parts in the deal. He was a very big gun enthusiast as well. I got to spend a good amount of time with him, and he treated my like family

For the heck of it I searched the tail numbers and found a photo of it, middle right. Falling down the rabbit hole.

As well as mention of its use and loss in Vietnam. Its crew is still in Laos. :(

And a Facebook page for the pilots and the story.

He lived in the greatest of times.

Glad you were able to get to know him.

^^^ I've seen that one quite a few times. Those pics were taken on different days because it isn't sitting in the same location in the last pic. The Museum of Naval Aviation at NAS Pensacola is an awesome place. I go every chance I get, and usually schedule it so I can watch the Blue Angels practice their routine during the season.

I took the first two pictures in early January 2020, the third picture is from the internet. Since they got to pose it, they got a much better picture. There lighting is much better.

Drive by it almost everyday when at our son’s home. The entire place (Eglin AFB) is living history. One of my favorites, though I am not able to actually visit is the site where Jimmy Doolittle trained for the Tokyo Raid. Located off of Bob Sikes Rd on the way to Defuniak Springs.
