RIP Seals

Thread title is misspelled. SEAL is all capitals. A group of them would be SEALs.

God bless the departed.

Accomplish the objective regardless of obstacles.

The only easy day was yesterday.

Second place is first place for losers, it pays to be a winner.

And God bless us for the fine bravery and sacrifice these men and their families have made.

Fucking tragedy. I wonder if they were sucked into the prop...cause those boys can swim and are generally kitted up very well for water work. We will probably never know.

Guy on the left is a former member of the elite team of the elite SEAL teams. Guy on the right is my good friend and one of the best skeet coaches in the world and trained up the SEAL to shoot the NSSA skeet World Championship! And this is them after the coach convinced him that he could hunt quail in Georgia on two prosthetic legs. I was never even in the same universe of toughness as that guy.

Bit of a funny story, when the SEAL guy was in the hospital the Doc came in to see him about prosthetics and the SEAL said "I only have one thing to say to you!" Doc said "what, SEAL guy?" SEAL said "I always wanted to be 6 foot tall and never made it. I want to be at least six feet in these new legs". And now he's six foot tall :cool:

Well if that’s the case then its impossible to swim with all the Gear they have on (vest ammo weapons etc)
 
Yep, the rumor is they were all geared up with weapons, bullet proof vests, ammo, all the combat gear....the first one slipped and fell into the ocean in the bottom of the waves in rough seas...the other seal jumped in to rescue his team mate. They both sunk like millstones were tied around their necks, with all their gear on.
So, that's the official story given to the public.
It aint the first time, ...the Navy had this problem before and suffered disastrous results. Four over loaded personal in the assault drowned in the ocean in Grenada.
Seems like this needs to be seriously addressed by the commanders, inside the seal teams, and current training. A really sad situation, that should have been avoided.

I don't buy this story. These guys are trained to operate in or around water. The idea that they aren't prepared to jump into the water due to their gear is BS. That is just the story they figure they can feed the public and have us believe it.

I guarantee their carriers are quick detach, no way that has been overlooked. I would think there is also a good chance they are using buoyant body armor, but not sure. If it was just the guy falling from the ladder, I could buy him being injured by impact and unable to swim. But to have a second guy go down with him, something else had to happen. RIP.

You're not running maritime operations with equipment that will sink and drown you before you can get it off.


Sucks for the families and team to lose them. But this definitely wasn't how it happened. It was very likely seas too rough for them to last, or something else that happened while in water/next to vessel they were boarding. No matter how tough or how good you're trained, if the seas are rough enough, you're just not gonna make it.

Only a few men know the truth about what happened. We may find out in 15 years or never.
 
Wouldn't they have emergency locators on them?
Load out vest back in the 70's, guys carried a flare.
All this technology, and someone's going to tell me, not one person had a small GPS emergency locator?.

OK, I read the story on another site.
So, we lost two of our finest, boarding a ship, that may (or may not) have weapons on it.
So WE are now the pirates off the Horn of Africa?
If the ship was loaded with illegal weapons, why not just put a missile in her side and watch her sink to the bottom?
What a waste of our boys for politician's delight.

What’s screwed up, at least to me, is that there has to be a contingency for a guy falling in the water. That’s the first thing that can go wrong with this type of deal. So… no real plan in place for this happening? I really doubt it. Anybody who has been in the service for more than 10 minutes knows this sort of thing is “what if’ed” to hell. Off the top of my head, they would for sure have water wings on, quick drop plate carriers, ir strobes etc. Also, there had to at least be a second boat on the scene pulling security and a FLIR capable UAV or helicopter up. Not to mention, I assume they have water proof/resistant comms. Unless the water was really rough or they both sunk straight to the bottom, they shouldn’t have been too hard to find. Also, ship search and seizure is Navy Seal 101, practiced often and done pretty regular. There was a serious screw up somewhere down the line that is/won’t be revealed.

Achim's razor would suggest that maybe the terrorists shot the first couple guys off the ladder. Or maybe the second guy died trying to retrieve his wounded comrade from the water and something bad happened. I doubt the terrorists just handed a boat full of weapons over peacefully to the SEALs. Biden Admin doesn't want to admit things just got real with Yemen. My $0.02.

The story that I read stated that the first guy go knocked off a rope ladder by a wave and then fell into a gap between the boarding craft and the ship and the second went in after him.
So its possible they got sucked into the propeller or crushed between the boarding craft and the ship before they could get their gear off.

YOu'd still think, like mentioned above, they'd have some sort of GPS device.

R.I.P. to the fallen, but ya'll some suckers if you think the published story is even close to the truth. I'm sure the operators were doing a completely different mission, and in an area we're not supposed to be.

We were in Laos and in Cambodia because we were invited to be there to fight elements of the NVA and VC that got in there. My friend, per his own description, spent 3 Christmases on the laotian-cambodian border. His specialty was remote detonation of ordnance. He would sneak into the encampments and tunnels and plant charges and then get out and far enough away. Once enough enemy agents returned, tap the switch and ka-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom, raining pho soup all over.

Discharge under general circumstances because he smacked the XO on the boat ride back to the states. He was a second class petty officer and walked off the gangway a seaman.
