Sidearms & Scatterguns More 1911 fuddery

What they did 40 years ago is completely irrelevant.

Him and his crew are no longer at the forefront of anything pistol related

Ok, ill bite. Who is at the forefront of pistol related stuff? I assume you mean any pistol, not just 1911.

As a 1911 builder, I will say that constantly dropping slide on a finely polished sear will deteriorate the trigger quality. If it is set up right, it shouldn't drop and if it is the half cock hooks should catch it. While it won't hurt a colt or tisa, it will damage a quality stoned sear nose if done regularly.

Mason Lane, Matt Pranka, Ben Stoeger, JJ Racaza, Tim Herron, to name a few

Not just on the shooting side of things but also on the teaching side of things

The type of pistol makes zero difference

Ok, we're talking teachers/shooters not builders. I thought you were talking about 1911 smith's, not that wilson is the top of that heap either. I still stand by my other post, if you have a really nice 1911 trigger, nothing will Bork it up faster than idiot dropping slide on empty chamber a bunch.

For smiths, I'd be looking at Chambers Customs, but I have no dog in the fight with the key discussion of dropping slides. I agree, I wouldn't pay $5 for a 1911 that fucks up when dropping the slide, but slowly making the excellent trigger worse over time by dropping on empty chamber is whatever to me, as long as it functions fine.

I got the Smith part covered(looks in mirror), I was just picking his brain a bit.

If it was a sloppy ass colt, sure you won't hurt that trigger. Now on a 1911 that is built nice and has 3.25lb trigger that breaks like a great bolt action trigger.....well dropping the slide is a good way to end up with a factory colt feeling trigger, lol.

When the slide slams against breechface of slide, with no rd being chambered to slow and cushion impact, a tight 1911 can peen the lugs, hood, and breechface. It is also fairly hard on slide stops that aren't forged. The hammer hooks are held off the sear nose when slidenis retracted. When slide slams forward the hammer hooks are allowed to slam into the sear nose. On a worked over 1911 that has a finely polished(think 2500+ grit stoned primary angle and a secondary escape angle) sear nose, that repeated slamming of hooks into sear nose will damage the sear nose. Will it fail? Not as long as everything was stoned and correctly, adequate sear leg tension is there, and hammer hooks are .020" or taller and cut at no less than 90° to hammer pin axis. It will just destroy the primary/secondary sear engagement point and surface finish. It will turn a nice slick icicle break into a cooked carrot break. The peening of breech, lug and slide stop shaft(depends on how tight barrel is fit and material of slide stop) is a concern. If you accidently drop the slide on an empty chamber 20-50x, probably not gonna be an issue. If you drop slide on empty chamber multiple times everyday, yeah you will damage it. There really isn't a reason to drop a slide on an empty chamber on any gun, other than trying to look cool. It takes a quarter of a second more to ride the slide fwd on an empty chamber with your support hand, as opposed to thumbing slide release and letting it fly. Next installment I'll explain why it's not good to spin an open revolver cylinder and flick it shut like in the movies, lol.

I should add that damage to slide stop barrel feet, barrel hood, and slide breechface is relative to recoil spring and 1911 size. A commander 45 or 10mm will have a 22+lb spring in it vs a govt 9mm 10lb spring.

Sounds like fancy 1911s are prissy faggot guns that don't hold up to serious use. Guess if you want a no frills, just works 1911 you just buy a Colt Government Model 🤷‍♂️

I haven't had any issue with any 1911's I've owned from dropping the slide during dry-fire or cleaning or clearing etc. Glad I haven't paid over $1000 for any 1911 I've owned.

Cool story bruh, keep dropping slides on empty chambers.....looks badass!

Yeah, #metoo, didn't know my old commander that's somewhere at 65k-75k rds down it is babies cause I don't drop slide on an empty chamber. At what point is dropping a slide on an empty chamber needed or required when using it as a tool? That's a serious question. At the range, making ready, insert loaded mag and drop slide to chamber a rd, fine. Shoot to slide lock, insert fresh mag and drop slide to chamber a rd, fine. Shoot to slide lock and your done shooting, you can drop slidenon empty chamber or just ride slide fwd with support hand. You choose to drop slide on empty chamber, ok, why? What does it accomplish? Why is that better than riding slide fwd on empty chamber before you pack up to leave? These are serious questions, maybe there's something I'm missing, but I can't for the life of me figure out why you'd choose to drop slide on an empty chamber.

Jesus Christ Massad, we get it; don't drop the hammer and keyring loops on your pants are convenient.

Lol, you don't know what you don't know. I guess if your retort is name calling, we know that your point of contention is bs and not based in knowledge or fact.

You have your 1911 facts, now get your cargo pants lesson.

For the love of everything holy just stop! I can’t take any more of this. A man can get only so erect.

I’m not gay, but Mas is just too sexy to be mortal. He’s got those mesmerizing googly eyes, a magnificent hair piece, and of course that sexy ass voice. Now you’re telling me he wears cargo pants? Holy shit how can anyone man or woman resist that combination of sex appeal?

Well now I gotta go beat my dick like it owes me money thinking about that hairpiece and fucking cargo pants.

Does anyone care about what the 1911 fudds say or do? They seem to forget that there are many other designs without all the weaknesses of a "finely tuned" 1911.

Yes I know who the guy in the video is. No I don't care about his advice. It's either dated or specific to only one type of pistol.

After I bought my CZ P09's and P07's, I traded my last 1911 for a Tikka T3x 7mm RemMag.

There ended my 1911 fuddery. 🤣🤣🤣

How dare you talk about god’s gun like that.

Is this some kind of vanity thing? To have a trigger like that when it makes no difference?

Yeah, kinda like having a hand load recipe for a precision rifle that “shoots in the 0.3s” to bang full sized ipsc targets at 300 yards…

A lot of us are probably guilty of that.

A quick reference to the website for my local range range steel target menu shows that they’re all well over 2-3 MOA for even the smallest targets. So the need for sub MOA precision isn’t really that critical to make steel ring.

All I can think of while reading the mechanism of supposed damage is “and those areas are not being replaced with improved parts why again?”

if your effort and time can be undone by an errant slide drop, its time to start exploring better metallurgy

Not really, I said clearly it's not gonna damage it if you do it accidently or occasionally. When I finish a build and it is in the 200rd test phase, I do purposely drop the slide 10x to verify there is no hammer follow. That will not hurt it. Now dropping the slide all the time for no reason other than "cause I can" is tarded. I've yet to hear anyone answer my question about why are you constantly dropping a slide on empty chambers, except "muh tools"? I'm really done with this, you guys can do whatever the hell you want. I won't waste time explaining why to someone that is dead set in their ways. As to ayoob, he hasn't been relevant since ever and other than laugh value, he has no value.

Except you didn't read it. I never said 1 slide drop ruins the world, in fact I said 20-50x isn't gonna damage it. I DID say dropping the slide all the time for no reason at all will definitely damage it. Now if you have a box stock 5lb trigger in tisa, yeah you won't make the trigger feel worse. If it's a race gun or a 5000.00 custom, it will damage the sear nose.

you see, that doesn't make sense. if it was going to peen the metal, it would do it all the time, or not. it's not something that magically happens at a threshold.

Sear and hammer hooks aren't hardened either. Some 1911 schmoe cut them on a jig with a hand file.
