The other day while doing some chronograph work, I accidentally bumped the back of the bolt and it slammed forward. Is this normal and should I be concerned about it firing like that?

Do you mean the FP 'slammed' forward ? IF so, I'd say your trigger is likely adjusted Too Light. If not that, the trigger or sear might be 'worn' ? Either way, it's lucky the chamber was empty.
IF you mean that the bolt was open and 'slid' forward, that's good that there is little resistance. The FP should be retracted at that time ?

On the back of the bolt there is a plunger. That slammed forward.

If the round end of the back of the bolt is the plunger you speak of then yes that is the firing pin and as fasteddie stated you likely have your trigger set too light.

That would make sense. I have the adjuster screw backed out to the lighted weight. Savage said its supposed to be 2.5

bubula I would call that the same as a push off on a revolver. I consider it to be dangerous since it could cause a discharge anytime the weapon is loaded. I would first try adding tension to the trigger until it doesn't push off and then add an extra half turn for caution.

bubula, If you 'polish' all the innerds with 1000g w/d paper, and lightly do the same to the trigger/sear contacts you can get the pull down pretty light. I have a B22 that's down around 1# or less by doing that and "Heating" the trigger spring to take off the tension. . . heat evenly 'just to Orange-hot' and let cool slowly. Alternatively, you could get the Varmint-trigger spring from Gunshack for under $10. I did that with an A22 and also got the T to ca 1.9#, but polishing that was too difficult to 'get into' the innerds. I just spray-washed off the OEM-grease and sprayed Silicone dri-lube into that.
