Muzzle Brakes poor form at the range?

took a .308 w/brake to an indoor range once. buddy wanted to shoot it, but was unwilling to travel to an outdoor range.
i warned the girl at the counter that it might bother the people next to me (so maybe put me on the end...?).
she smiled and put me next to somebody shooting a .22lr. :p

my shooting buddy has those fucking epsilon vg6 comps on all his ar15’s. it gets really old shooting next to him when we do drills. he thinks its funny

i need to get one and throw it on my 12.5 and see what he thinks.

30 cal rifles with comps dont bother me but 223’s have some serious high frequency to them.

I've been on a firing line next to a cadex 338 (those brakes are aggressive as fuck but work very well) which was blowing my hair sideways. I was still able to tune it out. Some people will complain about anything

🤣

Nah, dude doesn't shoot anymore, he's too busy being engaged. He has his fiance blow on his hair.
She blows more than my hair 😎

After posting this thread and reading all the responses, I might, might maybe consider a can possibly? LOL I just don't want that long assed thing hanging off the end of my rig. It's already a 26" barrel, 28" with the brake. It's not that I'm too lazy to unscrew the damned thing, I just don't want a pole vault for a rifle. Then you have to swaddle it like a baby to avoid mirage. Then tax stamps, mo money... Where does the madness stop?

That’s all true. My first and favorite is 9” long on the end of the 26” barrel. It’s why I stopped using it for PRS matches and went to a brake for that.

So, I think, the idiots that enforce the NFA thought that having suppressors easily available would make for more dangerous shooters.

I don't see any difference in the amount of gun deaths. People will shoot each other, suppressed or not. So, the prohibitive tax stamp and wait for "permission" to use a suppressor just penalizes good people.

Texas passed a law that suppressors made and sold and used in Texas do not need to comply with the NFA guidelines. Only problem is, you are not going to find a gun shop that is willing to lose their FFL or a gunsmith willing to lose his FFL/SOT for selling a non-registered can.

With the exception of loss of money and upheaval, there are times when secession seems attractive.

Well we as shooters all know that those who get these things rolling know nothing at all about rifles. They actually believe that people who run suppressors are a bunch of maniacal silent assassins hell bent on shooting up God knows what, then disappearing undetected into the ether.

It's so absurd and obviously so, that every response in this thread has been about suppressors being courteous to other people. It renders their whole mindset insane and downright idiotic. To us it's just a damned tool. To them it's the devil incarnate. Idiots.

This thread pushed me to the purchase of a two port brake for my 18 inch 7-08 build. I was undecided, but fuck it, if it hurts some many peoples feelings then I’m ok with it.

" If it hurts some ( so? ) many peoples feelings then I`m Ok with it. " If indeed that`s a serious statement and not made in jest, that`s an interesting way to look at things.

I can laugh at it myself because if my hat got blown off, I'm one of those guys that would walk up and say damn, what is that thing? But I do realize I am not most people. I'm not easily rattled and often laugh at myself.

And being able to laugh at one `s self is one of the best ways to get through our time on this rock with one`s psyche reasonably intact.

Yes sir, indeed it is.

Laugher and maintaining a strong sense of humor is vital.

Life is full of serious challenges and serious gut checks.....it is also full of mirth and true belly laughter if you keep your awareness up.

God knows that I miss my dear sweet bride. I miss her so badly. Not a day goes by, however, that I don't laugh at something we both found funny. Cancer ended her life way too soon. I do find myself in some goofball efforts trying to get through each day....and I'll take pleasure in the moments, knowing she would be there to poke at me and get me laughing....get my arse in gear and get after it....whether it was work or play.

Her smile and laughter still beam and echo in our home....and I pray they always will.

I have no fears in this world other than I'll screw up and fall off the path that will lead me to her one future day, Lord willing.
Discipline & awareness and prayer so far seem to be keeping me heading in the right direction.

I've found in my 54 years of life that the Lord has a sense of humor, too. I take great satisfaction in that.
I hope what when I stand in judgement I'll be given some latitude for my occasional foul language an be allowed to hug my wife for all I'm worth.

She'd have been laughing at me hard yesterday.....when I got a long overdue haircut. She'd have busted my balls over a scruffy beard and the fact that our family dog had more frequent hair cuts than I.

Went in for a night shift last night. Some of the characters there had me about to choke I was laughing so hard.

Humor is VITAL.

I'm no competition shooter......just a middle-aged hack who is intrigued with the challenges of longer range shooting, handloading and geeking up the ballistics to make it happen. It's a new aspect to a lifetime of shooting, hunting and being around guns. I may have gravitated to it at some point.....but the time spent here on The Hide is often filled with some truly funny stuff. I need that just as bad as I need my morning coffee. And, as others have said, it might be more difficult or one more hoop to jump through in other countries to get a rifle but the suppressor is over the counter, as it were.

Available with no waiting and most often used by hunters who wish to avoid damage to their earballs.

Thank you.

That is precisely how I see it. I was blessed with 27 years of marriage to an absolutely wonderful woman in every way.
Things were always "just right" when we were together. Even during her battle with cancer she found ways to prepare me on how to keep living. Some of those ways weren't known to me until after her passing.

I was blessed and I remain so. (y) (y) (y) (y) (y)

Got a couple hour nap after getting off an overtime shift last night. Making decisions on setting up a new rifle.....I hate to pillage off existing rifles....and didn't want to rob parts that were being saved for a soon to arrive rifle......only one option left: buy new stuff.
Going shopping for more Area419 gear.......Hellfire brakes and arcalock sections.

Every rifle I own for LR shooting has a brake- impossible to spot my impacts without one.
Any pussy next to me has a problem with it, they can fuck off. That said, doesn't mean I don't extend common courtesy to minimize the impact on the shooters next to me when possible.

Years ago I used brakes (NOT breaks ya dweebs) on a few rifles I had.
No matter how much they cost they actually do little to help with recoil.
If you are honest with yourself you will realize that all they do is make you fixate on the noise rather than the recoil.

Nowadays I know that since they do so little they are in reality of no use to me.
I'm now in a state that I am all fucked up with cancer, it's in my spine if you feel the need to know....and yet.
I shoot my 30-378 wooby w/o a brake.
I shoot my 470NE w/o a brake.
I shoot hot loads out of my 45-70 w/o a brake

Y'all be pussies if you HONESTLY think you need a brake.
You don't and are only hurting your shooting skills by using one.
There's this thing called recoil, and this other thing called flinching.
You need to train for those too.
You also need to train w/o any hearing protection......unless you think you'll have enough time to grab your earmuffs in the middle of the night when that burglar breaks in.
Shooting a 9mm or 45acp inside an enclosed room is ungodly loud if you've never done so, louder than any braked centerfire rifle out in open air.
Train for it.

Thank you!!! I really needed the laugh.

That is some world class Fudd commentary right here. Almost felt like I was at the gun store 😂

It’s also not against range rules to Krakatoa between your legs every 5 secs causing people to turn green and barf 🤮 from all of your vaporized poop particles clogging their sinuses.

But you want to have class, right?

Right?

Some of your are shaking your heads. For you, the RSO should simply pipe your brake’s effluence directly back into your muffs. Or maybe into the front and rear of your underwear. Blow those pubes around, dry them out. It’s yours, right? Enjoy it! Lol

But seriously, if you’re addicted to brakes, you could buy one of those new TBAC cans with the brake attached. Bound to be less loud than just a brake, one would hope.

Muzzle breaks are for pussies. There, I said it.

Man up! If you can't handle the recoil without a brake go to a smaller caliber. I've never used one and I shoot really hot 45-70 loads on light lever actions while approaching age 70.

At the range you're not only hurting peoples' ears FOREVER - The concussion might even be worse - been there and felt it. And, shorter/normal length barrel 308 guns are the worst offenders. Larger calibers with much longer barrels are still bad, but not as bad in comparison. The concussion will not hit the bench next to you using big guns with longer barrels. .50 cal excepted.

Those 308's blow everything that's loose off my bench.

We shooters are a polite group, for obvious reasons. Don't use brakes at the range, take them off for range practice - might even make you a better shooter. Either that or sooner than later the ranges will make you do it. Worse, they could have benches limited to brakes. That would be a real education where you have blast concussion and ear damage from both sides!

If you still want to use them go to the range really early when it's half empty and stay away from other shooters - then it's cool.

Man up and be polite. or get a suppressor.....

I'm glad that I humored you. At least I'd made someone's day a happier one. That said, my ears have been ringing since the late 70's. Hope, scratch that, pray you never have to go through life with that "little" problem....

Not quite sure how to respond sir. Brakes aren't just to reduce recoil because it hurts. I used to shoot eggs off of fence posts with a 300 Win Mag before brakes existed. I'm quite sure you know what I'm talking about in that it was a badge of honor to beat the hell out of yourself with a massive rifle along with a couple of buddies. I'm still that way to be honest. Recoil doesn't make me whine and run home to momma.

I use one because those of us who shoot competitively have to be able to see our shots hit through a scope, take quick follow ups at times, etc... When I'm running my 7mm Remington Magnum without a brake and squeeze one off, it bounces the gun off the bench or ground if I'm prone and points at the target on the opposite side of the range. No exaggeration!

I can handle recoil and even get a sadistic joy from it at times. It's impressive and manly as hell.

But it renders my precision shooting capabilities at very long distances impossible. And I will not run a suppressor.

I'm buying another Hellfire Match today.....if it pisses off the crybaby Karens and their cucked half-a-fags then all the better.
It'll be money well spent.

Over-opinionated low-knowledge fukks seem to thrive on this site.

I see some of the most ignorant bullcrap spewed by dipshyt blowhards.

It isn't a matter of age, either. Idiocy spew is abundant among the fudds as well as the flatbrims.

It is about as bad as liberals and their brand of dumbass.

In reality though, who gives a fuck. I mean, I hate brakes and don't use them without a suppressor mounted on them, but if you want to run one then go for it.

If someone next to me is using one at the range I'll just leave or find a spot a ways away from them.
