Spraying pine plantations for beetles and other pests, 24 years ago. This field, not a quarter mile from our home, is totally unrecognizable today. Been planted in pines, cut over and replanted. Todays pulpwood pines grow like grass during a wet summer

Used to see those Bell helicopters all the time. Now it's only Robinsons.

Seems like we have stepped back.
Not really. Those Bell helicopters are highly overrated. Where UH-1's (204, 205) are true workhorses, the 207 ain't. Robinsons have a lot more lift per pound of helicopter than a 407. And, they're a lot cheaper to operate.

I think it is just a generation thing.

Say civil helicopter and that picture pops into your mind. Military and it is its cousin. The "current" ones, I need to think a sec, oh yea blackhawk down.

PP check complete for the boy today. DE’s are booked 1-3 months out 😬. Now we move on. I’m pretty sure today was harder on dad than the kid.

What shall it be, a first solo story or a check ride story........ok solo story it is.

Doing the learning to fly thing, I am flying one of these. The plane that had the entire wish list of instructors across the country......any guesses, yup:
1697538654294.png

Tramahawk.

It has two doors so the instructor opens the door says give me two touch and goes then full stop and park it......my ever so thoughtful response was....ahh......now. Yup he closes the door and walks away. Ok, this will go well or I will be on the news tonight....I came close to being on the news that night.

Two touch and goes no issue. Now in for the landing, but first unless you have been in one of these or an older Piper product you need to understand how the flaps work. They are not electric like in brand C, they are manual. You operate them with this thing that reminds you of an E-brake lever in an older car. You lift up (from very old memory) three clicks, from like 5 deg to full in three clicks or something. There is a little bit of weight to them as you manually pull the lever up....not a lot but enough to know you are lifting something, the clicks are quite loud. Again this is all off of late 80's memories......on base one click, no problem, final one more click.....no problem, power is pulled way back and we are gliding in for a landing. Short final, low and very slow I pull the last click, I know I hear it click and I let go......THUNK the lever falls all the way to the floor, now I am low very slow and no flaps, this could be messy, plane sticks its nose to mother earth. My hand starts moving without me moving it, guess a guardian angel was riding with me, I don't remember moving my hand, it moved and put in a tick of throttle, then it held that flap lever. I landed with one hand on the flap lever and the other on the "wheel". I taxi clear and stop and fiddle with the flaps, they will not stay up. Just like an E-brake there is a little button on the end, it is working they just refuse to lock in. Better let them know about that one. I taxi to my spot and shut down.

I tie it up and the instructor comes out and says what were you doing with the flaps......they are broken they will not stay locked up.....naaa.....well hell sure enough they will not stay in place for him.

I tell him the story and all he said was....see I told you that you are ready.

I really liked the piper over the 150. The Cessna was so much more tight inside, and I am not a big guy, you squeeze into the thing....does have electric flaps however. I really did not find the piper that bad, just fly it like you have a brain in your head.

About a year later some idiot Dr Killed Golf, the piper. He decided he knew what he is doing and wanted to do an unimproved field landing, that was against school policy. He landed rolled through a barbed wire fence and took a wing to a tree, but it did not come off hollywood style. Fucking stupid Dr, that was a good airplane, and faster then all the others.

The boy flew to Marshalltown (KMIW) to give my dad a ride today, his first pax. Dad lives in a retirement home there

and will turn 95 in December of this year. Clear for the most part but cool. Dad quit flying his 182 at 91. His head doesn’t work quite right anymore, but still enjoyed this thoroughly. Three generations now of this flying monkey business.

Hope I am flying at his age. Very cool!

Not aviation related but nice to see three generations that wear real pants.

I'm tired of seeing everyone in sweat pants.

Sorry. Normal people stand out now a days when I see them.

Nice pics. Is that a Dakota? I have been wanting to go spend a weekend @ Shasta, about the only part of CA I haven't been. Any recommendations for a stop? Seems neither Weed nor Siskiyou have cars.
Close....235B. Really not sure on the car situation. I live semi close so I usually drive. Obviously Redding has rentals but that's a ways away.
I recently picked this up.....lots of places I want to go don't have cars.

Suitcase cycle. Breaks down into manageable pieces. I wouldn't say it's super easy by yourself....but it's doable.

Interesting. You have to post a pic in travel mode. I have bikes and electric scooters. Used them @ Mariposa, Visalia, Agua Dulce, and others. Not really doable @ Shasta area. I use Turo too, but have never found anything available nearby.
Beautiful aircraft.

Next time I break it down, I'll take some pics. Still getting it figured out.
Thanks for the compliment on the plane....looks good in pictures but really needs paint!! Just over 2300 TT.....she's a good one!!

Between an occasional bout of dizziness, which I will not lie about in a flight physical and the plain fact that it is just way too expensive for our retirement finances, it just is not something I can do.

Nothing like giving sailing lessons, when I am having trouble even standing up, much less moving around a sailboat, trying to explain things to different crew members. Wear my vest and make sure I always have a good handhold. Now piloting an aircraft, no safety vest will protect a lone pilot who has no balance.

That's a tough call to have to make....good on you for making it. Lots of guys push it to far IMO.

Boy building XC time prior to starting instrument rating. I rode along because I was invited. I give bits of advice or ask questions to make him think. My question here was, why is our taxi light on at 6,500 MSL?🤷🏼‍♂️😂 Checklist discipline....

It was always fun humbling “pilots” with a lil ole taildragger 😎

Had a CFI buddy of mine that was really embarrassed. Couldn’t keep it on the runway.😂

Three years of my misspent youth were teaching in taildraggers. It's pretty easy to prevent any embarrassment, if you're so inclined.

I need to take advantage of the fact that CheckMate (people who make the checklist I see you use) will customize a checklist. Pretty cool service. We have a few things I’d like to change on the one I ordered and ditch the homemade one.

Honestly for him, I’d prefer he use the Cessna checklist. Most examiners prefer the manufacturer’s as well. I’m not saying CheckMate is bad, it’s just the examiners want to stay within the factory checklist I’m guessing for liability/legality reasons. This checklist by CheckMate doesn’t have a good “flow” to it in my opinion. Kinda bounces you around.

I could see where creating your own for use on a daily basis would be helpful especially when adding a common sense item here or there would be nice.

Got a nice weekend here in Northern Komifornia so the wife and I planned a overnight backpack trip I to the high country. Took Friday off and scouted from the air. Camping pics are in the Whats your view thread.

Fun low pass down the lake before heading home.

Bought a Rans S9 Chaos. Didn't want to keep paying rent for a hangar so I brought it home from the airport and put that SOB in my dining room. Finished the fabric on the rudder and elevators. Wings and fuselage in progress. Should be done in two months. Ain't no woman telling me I can't have an airplane in my house! :D

Man you should have hung in there and finished that beautiful thing. I got the S9 Chaos for the fully aerobatic capability that satisfies that urge which runs deeply in my genome. LOL

The good olé days!

1982/83'
Somewhere over southern Alabama !

Backstory

Early one Saturday morning, my dad and I took off out of Eufaula, Alabama and headed south east for Quincy, Florida...about 95 miles away. About 7 miles south of Eufaula the fog rolled in thick. Dad flew for 1 hour, fog was still thick, so he did a 180 and headed back. One hour later (two hours total) the fog thinned...but we saw nothing but rolling hills. No rolling hills in south east Alabama....so we had to be east of course, across the river and inside Georgia. At that same moment we saw the railroad tracks....turned west and followed them, where they came out on the south side of Eufaula. After flying for two hours, Dad was only 12 miles off course...using nothing but a watch and a compass.
The Good Ole days!

I can not tell you how many times my dad kicked the back of my seat...when I turned around...he was like...🤷‍♂️ where are we?

We used to do a fly-out from 08A (Wetumpka) to Eufaula. The State Park would gladly send a van over to pick us all up for the Sunday Buffet at the Park and take us back afterwards. There was a derelict old Stinson 10A (fairly rare) that sat on the ramp there forever and we always felt sorry for it. One of my buddies couldn't stand it anymore and wound up buying it. I took my truck and trailer down there with a crew and we disassembled it and hauled it back to his shop. Probably around year 2000.
