Looking for a 6.5 or 308 patterned rifle NOT ar10

M14/M1A. My USMC DMR clone has put quite a bit of meat on the table over the years.

For 6.5 Creedmoor, there is a Springfield M1A option but it won’t match AR-10 accuracy/precision/serviceability/parts supply.

Robinson Arms also has the XCR-M in .308, 6.5CM, and .260 Remington.

For .308/7.62x51, you can go with the legacy battle rifles:

M14/M1A
Hk91
BM59
Galil ARM 7.62

or some of the newer options:

SCAR
XCR-M
MDR
Tavor 7

Out of all of these just for fun/unique rifles, I would see the BM59 as a collector’s piece for range fun, and the Tavor 7 as an interesting 7.62 blaster that runs on PMAGs.

For quality of workmanship, the Hk91 reigns supreme if you can find a real one, but it won’t be cheap so probably not what you’re looking for. You can go the cheaper route with PTRs, but once you’ve had Hk, it’s hard to look at the imitations.

FALs run the gamut of quality, with not a lot of options nowadays.

Galil ARMs are collector’s pieces.

JRA is doing BM-59s off of parts kits or imports. Mags are different than M14 mags, but available for $49 per.

I like the idea of a Tavor 7 20” with upgraded parts for a fun gun. This is a 5.56 model but you get the idea:

I've always loved this m14 variation.

Take a look at the new PWS UXR coming out soon. You can make it a 223 to 308 in minutes. Nice light weight too.

Well to be different for the price of a scar 20 you could get a Galil ACE 308 and a classic wood stock M1A. So then you'd have a carbine that takes PMAGs and has decent optics mounting plus a wood stocked "Battle Rifle" to sling around and shoot iron sights every now and then.

I had an m1a with the camo mcmillan stock and the saco-lowell criterion barrel plus a leupold M3 scope, miss it a bit. When I sold it the guy drove 300miles one way to get it.

I don’t blame him. An M1A with a McMillian stock that has been properly bedded can be a tack driver. Mine has a Douglas medium weight barrel, the M2A stock (actually a surplus stock from the McMillian contract as an overrun for the Marines DMR project) was steel bedded with Devcon and I fitted all NM parts. The end result was a rifle that will easily go 3/4 MOA with my hand loads. Of course the catch is how much money you put into it. Mine was a “process” over time and to avoid having an aneurism, I purposely didn’t keep track of how much I spent on it!

If you want show off, you could get a Sig SG 751 or a B&T APC308.

If it were for me, and I was planning on shooting from a bench, I would go with a nice M14/M1A; maybe a nice LRB. They’re not very modern, but there’s something deeply satisfying about shooting a wood-stocked M1A with a nice barrel.

If I were more interested in a blaster, I would get a 16” PTR 91 and throw an OSS can on it.

So, what’s a real HK 91 going for these days? Not the inflated GB pricing. I’ve always liked the way they looked but I have no experience with them.

I see them for sale locally in the $4-4500 range.

What about a New Sig SPEAR full sized . it's different enough

Springfield imported greek HKs and the imbel FALs are what 2000-2500 bucks? Would be decent for a collector item too.

I've got a M1A Super Match from the mid 90s with factory McMillan camo stock that I bought new way back then. I think about selling it now and then for something newer like a SCAR, but can never bring myself to do it. The SCAR feels like a toy compared to my M1A, but I'll probably still get one

Another option for folks with stupid money would be a H&K PSG-1. They have a great reputation for accuracy, scarcity and a high price tag.

There is also the Rock River LAR-8, .308. It also takes FAL magazines. Let me know if you have any interest.

Could be due to them being pre-ban, so people in ban States might still have a chance of owning one.

That on top of 1980s import Hk91s being collector’s items.

My brother bought his 1985 import Hk94 for maybe $859-$900 if I recall. After he died in 2018, I sold it for his wife for $5,000 and it went very fast to an Hk collector. It’s not every day you will have the opportunity to buy a firearm that says, “Made in W. Germany” on the side of the magazine well.

I’m not sure why the Hk94s said that, while the Hk91s I’ve seen didn’t, even though all of them were imported well before the wall came down in 1989.

For those not familiar with the history, after WWII, Germany was divided into West Germany and East Germany. The 1980s-imported Hk94s were marked “Made in W. Germany”. Every Hk91 I’ve seen says “Made in Germany”, even ones manufactured and imported before later Hk94s.

B&T APC308

I have the Robinson Armament XCR-M in .308, 20" barrel with the 3-port brake. Other than having feeding issues with one specific brand of ammo, which for all I know could have been out of spec, it's been great thus far. Folding adjustable stock, crisp trigger, enhanced ambi AR controls, SR-25 mags, monolithic upper with mLOK, long-stroke gas piston, 3-lug bolt that has both AK and AR influences, adjustable gas block, and a simple barrel swap (one hex to unscrew) for length and/or caliber changeout. Recoil impulse is managed well by the brake. It's definitely on the heavy side (just under 12 lbs. w/ sling, scope, & empty mag). The backup iron sights it comes with are basic but get the job done. A2 pistol grip is lame, but aftermarket choices abound.

+1 for Robinson XCR. You can get a 16" 308 barrel for blastin and 18-20" 6.5 barrel for precision blastin' in the same rifle. Yay 2 guns in 1.

Love my SCAR 20, zero issues. 308 and 6.5 with just a barrel swap.

Hk91 Is your best pick.

OP forget all that shit I said about getting a SCAR 20. Get one of those HK’s! Sure they are more money and objectively worse in every way but the cool/collectible factor can’t be ignored.

If you go the SA58/FAL route, get old steelies for mags rather than the DSA plastic mags. The DSA mags are quite issue-prone.

B&T APC308 DMR

I still have a virgin DSA FAL receiver lying around that one day I have plans on attempting to turn into a DMR rifle. Biggest problem with the FAL though is it has a reputation for vertical stringing in its shot groups. That and cheap surplus parts have dried up these days.
