I hunted the foothills quite a bit with my AX, never took it on an actual mountain hunt, but a lot a miles and a lot of vertical at times. First trip sucked but it motivated me to drop some gut fat and hit the weights.
Take the AI and go make some memories!

Love those pictures and the rifle setup. What sling are you using?

Picked up a used 20” 6.5 Creedmoor barrel that was spun up by TS Customs for my MC.

Berger factory ammo, 130 OTM’s.

Still wrapping my head around the brutal efficiency of this system, went to the post office yesterday morning to grab the barrel, bought two boxes of ammo on the way to the range, couple patches through the bore, 1 fouler round, 3 rd group, zero reset, impacts and hard data in 100yd increments to 1k in -2700 DA in 15mph, gusting 30mph(mostly in my face) in just 21 rounds. Come back to 100 to refine zero and shoot 5 into the group shown.

This thing keeps me stepping back and saying that’s why you buy an AI.

Wicked combination.

To prove I actually have and shoot an AI and don't just talk shit. I always intend to take a pic in the act but always forget. Had to take these 2 back out of the case to get the pic before I left.

AT wearing her 6x47 barrel next to her new sister in the Lord's caliber. One of these will be in a match end of the month. Starting to get a hankering for a 24-26" 6.5 barrel for it.

The 130-grain Berger bullet is money. I have used the Federal loaded cartridge in my AT and it is amazing. I have tried it in my MC as well and the performance is comparable. Unfortunately, my MC has an LFP and it craters the small rifle primers.

The Berger cartridge with the 130-grain is a large rifle primer, isn't it? If yes, I should give it a go in the MC

I was shocked with the accuracy. A little bit of primer cratering going with mine. This MC is large firing pin as well. The Berger loadings are large rifle primer. 2830fps or so from this 20” tube, more than I could ask for. Not going to argue with a factory load that shoots so well and leaves you with Lapua brass.

Until I asked you, I thought you had the AI ELR 50BMG out there today the way everyone had shunned you on that side of the range.

I guess they were just being cautious.
😂

BTW, that’s Col. Rock on the right.

I am cross-linking this post here as I just went through the “I want to use more spacers than my AI AT stock screw length supports” drama myself.

Luckily, I had some screws on hand that worked after a bit of trimming with ye olde Dremel.

Any of you fellas tote your AT for mountain hunts?

I'm doing a 2nd rifle elk hunt in CO this October and even though she's a portly gal, I really want to to take my AT with 19" .308 or 24" 6mm Creed barrel. I really don't want to go spend $1800+ on a new rifle and scope for one hunt and I'm confident as hell with the AT/T6Xi combo.

Fools errand? Full blown masochism? Good idea or somewhere in between?

Fwiw this is my first elk hunt but I've got a solid network of family and friends in that area. The 30/30 next to the AT will be going on the trip as a backup and a brush gun if they hide out in the thickets.

I packed my AT with the AO chassis around the UT mountains for my deer hunt last season. Had it in an Eberlestock most of the time and it wasn't bad, for the times it wasn't I was just using a Magpul padded sling. Mine had a 16.5" 308 barrel with a Sandman S. Best thing I did though was take it out for test hikes to see what made it most comfortable.

One other thing I discovered after buying my AT is that mine came with a lighter-weight profile 308 barrel. EO sells “2018 profile” barrels, which are heavier and came on my AX, and the other barrels are lighter/slimmer.

Mile High doesn’t seem to make that distinction?

Perhaps you can check to see which barrel is installed on your rig.

I'll have to check that out. I'm not sure what these profiles are exactly. 308 on it is an AINA, FDE 6 Creed came off a newer AX and the shortest is a 6.5 Creed from proof.

Maybe I can find a takeoff in the EE and have it turned down to a shorter weight. Might look goofy as hell but it'll surely save weight.

I was told that AI barrels are closest to a medium Palma-type contour. Not exact but close. I always find that contour too light but I am not humping it in the field.

All the barrels I have had built are either Heavy Palma or MTU.

I have a medium palma blank from Lothar Walther . I'll double check it but I'm fairly sure it's slightly lighter than a pre 18 AI barrel. I think the marksman contour is more in line.

I am not familiar with that contour. Is it specific to LW?

I have a couple of pre-18 LW barrels. I would agree that they are probably larger than the medium Palma. My LW barrels are thinner than my heavy Palma barrels.

Shot the flyswatter challenge with the .308 barrel at a 100yards and failed miserably haha .. it's originally intended as a 50yard 22LR challenge with 5 minutes on the clock. It's fun though, the time pressure definitely made it interesting, will try again next time out.

As a side note, my frontend shook loose on this new AXSR (120 rounds through it now) while I was shooting which introduced some play into the system/ I'm pretty sure it happened because I added a bunch of forend weights and the forend seemingly wasn't seated into the "hump" fully when it was originally torqued down. I re-seated it properly (now the gap between action and frontend is also much narrower) and added a little VibraTite VC-3 before torquing back to 35inch/lbs, will see what happens next time out. Assuming it'll be fine now that the recoil impulse for the frontend isn't free floating with the weights on it.

I believe the black barrels are pre 18 or whatever they’re called. The bottom barrel appears to be post 18. They have that “step” in the pre 18 where the contour slims down a bit

My 308 LW barrel on my AT is identical to yours on the rifle. The bartleins and others I’ve had on my ATX or AXMC have been the post 18

No the ones I used to buy were bartlein. A few other companies made them back before straight contour was the match contour. People wanted more than a med palma but not quite a heavy palma so the marksman was born.

All green currently (non thumbhole) but trying to embrace the thumbhole life and a AO Vision chassis that's on the way shortly.
Id like you to know you just cost me 90 GBP. You made me realize I had green fronts and there was nothing stopping me from ordering a green thumbhole kit.

Now I have a black thumbhole kit collecting dust.... need black fronts and pistol grip and I'll dip those.

If anyone has black (or any color) fronts and pistol grip they want to offload let me know.

Where did you get the green thumb hole kit from?

I have looked and looked but all appear out of stock.

Minding linking or sending a PM from where you ordered the thumbhole kit?

You have to get the fixed version. Good news is it's the same skin as folder and has a score mark where you have to cut. I converted my tan and black thumbhole kits very easily. Cut a little long and then fine tune with rigid sanding block with fine sandpaper.

9 green kits in stock. Bunch of AI swag too, I picked up some stickers and a patch.

Edit: DO NOT call and ask if they ship to the US. They will say no but if you just do the order online they ship no problem. Myself and a bunch of others here have ordered from them without issue.

At the risk of filling up my suitcase.. if any of you are going to the IPRF World Championships at Cameo in September... I will be coming out and could bring some stuff over for some.of you if you do start having shipping problems.

Anything heavier than skins though and I might start having an issue with luggage weight
