What is Tom Berenger's rifle in Sniper? Anyone know?

Winchester Model 70?
Admittedly never officially incorporated into any branch of the service that I’m aware of but it’s a movie and it looks suspect enough

The safety doesn't LOOK like the 3 position on a M70, more like the M700.

Looks like a Remington 700P, perhaps painted.

Edit: Upon re-reading the OP, it seems we’re trying to nail down what it was replicating? Obviously it’s an R700, but as to what specific model of rifle they were attempting to duplicate, I don’t know. None of it adds up, so I’m guessing the prop folks did the best they could with what they had.

That movie is why I’m on this forum today lol. Must’ve watched it 100 times growing up. Thankfully I now know that sharpening bullets isn’t a thing.

Back in the day was cool hollywood bs movie. Know Billy Zane gun was hk 91 "sniper" model. Remember that the helo scene, the door guner makes the shot but buys the farm. Billy Zane character gets the credit. Haven't watched that one in a while.

Things I'm sure or fairly sure:

Rem 700 Action
Badger or mk4 rings
Leupold Mk4 m3 (appears that it might be the variable magnification)

The thing I'm unsure about is the stock. Most of the HS Precision of that era had straight combs/cheek rest. The rifle he's using appears to have a Mcmillan HTG type comb/cheek. It's possible that could just be the way it looks after foam and duct tape work for the cheek.

I'm going to tentatively say it's a rem 700 barreled action dropped into an MCM HTG variant. As mentioned above, prop folks do the best they can with what they have and aren't overly concerned if it isn't completely perfect.

Just a general “Thank You” for pointing out the link to the site. Have questions about some of the firearms that I have seen in various movies and TV shows.

Action is Remington 700, the barrel looks smooth no fluting in one and a flute or shadow in another picture. Stock looks HS Precision. Appearance of a police rifle.
But it's none of those but likely a prop gun.
Most today are rubber, plastic replicas...so accidents do not happen.
Clint Eastwood, used such guns, in the Outlaw Jossie Wales, the guns were made rubber and plastic. A guy recently bought the pair used in the movie, in a prop barrel, full of fake guns.
Blank firing guns are kept sepetate, with certain protocol on use, with use of mirrors so no one points a blank firing gun at another actor in reality...that is strictly forbidden.

You know you are good when you can sharpen your bullets. I have tried and tried but just can’t get it right.

I just scrolled through the movie looking for details and the barreled action appears to be from a parkerized Remington 700P. The optic is definitely a Leupold Mk4 fixed 10X with covered M3 turrets on two piece bases with Leupold Mk4 or Badger rings. I don't think the stock is either a HTG or HS Precision though but possibly a McMillan Hunter stock. Not a lot is shown of the buttstock but there is a very short glimpse while they are approaching the jungle hotel where Gunny turns and exposes some detail that appears to be a Monte Carlo cheek piece.



The way the light is shining on that part indicates it's elevated from the rest of the stock and it's not foam or tape because there is none on the stock, in an earlier scene we see the underside of the stock as Gunny is turning away.



Also the stock is shiny and smooth like a gel coat McMillan and it terminates into the pistol grip at a steeper angle it appears.

The profile of a McMillan Hunter is also similar to the HTG so cammied up using camera angles to your advantage it'd be easy to pass it off as a HTG:

I've had several of them. Two are in service.
One still orginal, except it has over 20,000 rds on the the action. Three barrel changes, with heavy recoil lug. A 2oz Jewell trigger and the action trued and bolt sleeved.
And the original Mark 4 M3 is on another rifle, steel Badger scope basis. It very accurate and has been taken to 1400yds.
The other now wears a Bartlein 9 twist, in a newer HS stock the old original has been modified for detachable mag system.
The Mark 4 m3 has been on the original rifle for over 18,000 rds. Then to the 50BMG for 1400 rds, its now on a light weight 308 AR 10 it has never failed, with heavy use since its original purchase...lots of dialing.
Set up to use all available moa 100 yds to 1400yds one turn if the elevation knob. 10X is all ya need to make consistent hits in that range...I've done it. But ya need good eyesight...mine doesn't make the cut these days.
Mark 4 m3 on the 50BMG.
I have a lot experience with this rifle and scope combo...influenced by the real snipers in Vietnam, the scout sniper 1985 manual, and Precision Shooting magazine, as references, put it all together for a system that worked for me. It's a proven system, if you apply it, and have a heavy practice schedule. Or just for fun...
