Aadland Engineering Still in business?

Does anyone know if Aadland Engineering is still in business? I need to order some more flip up caps and sent them a couple emails with zero response. Their phone number now is also like (555) 555-5555...sounds totally legit.

There is something incorrectly configured on that aadmount.com domain.

There is:
https://aadmount.com/shop/, which links to https://aadmount.com/contact/ (this page is the one that lists the 555-555-5555 number and also lists the owner as “Fashn” with an address of 123 Example Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85260)

And there is:
http://shop.aadmount.com/, which links to http://shop.aadmount.com/contactus.sc

The latter seems to be the correct site, and is the one I have used. I do not know enough about domain/subdomain config to know if the first set of URLs are a clever scam or is merely a misconfig of his domain name system.

The fellow who runs aadmount is purposely hard to get ahold of, as I gather he does other things and doesn’t want to be bothered too much with customer service. If you email him at the http://shop.aadmount.com/contactus.sc form I’m sure he will get back to you.

Ask him about the first set of domains. It is not good for his business, either way (scam or misconfig).

Also, if you just want to order some caps or whatever (vs product questions) just order them. All his products typically say, “Backordered” because I think they are made-to-order. Sort of dumb but as I said, I think he either has another full-time gig or just isn’t really focused on the user experience.

You’ll get the product. Many other people have been confused by the “backorder” status and have hesitated. Do a web search and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
 
I finally got a hold of him. Seemed to be related to the issues mentioned above with the two different contact pages. He also confessed that he would never get any work done if he responded to all the emails he gets. I suggested an auto reply so at least there was some contact established. Whatever, I guess I can cut him some slack because his caps are fantastic.

Yeah, I bet the first set of URLs are some default set from his hosting provider that he has failed to delete or simply fwd to the correct pages.

Edit: his bigger problem is google is linking to both sets of URLs.

And yeah, he should just be up front about it on his contact page and just explain why it’s hard to contact him.

Plus, there’s got to be a way to get his inventory system to display “made-to-order” vs “Backorder”.

Those three simple changes would probably save him a lot of grief.

I had a question a couple months ago about whether any of his existing caps would fit a relatively new scope, so I used the contact form above. It took a few weeks to hear back, but he did respond. Unfortunately, he couldn’t help me, but was very friendly about it.

Like others have said, I’ve ordered a “back ordered” set of caps in the past. They arrived a couple weeks later.

I really like the Aadland caps and will use them as long as they’ll fit the scope I need them for, but another option would be the MK Machining ones. I prefer the push-button ocular on the Aadlands, but MKM seem to be just as solid.
 
I ordered a set of caps that were listed as back ordered on 06/22.
Got an automated order confirmation email right away and shipping confirmation with tracking a couple days later.
Caps were in my mailbox yesterday.
 
I ordered caps 4 days ago and their site/registration with pay systems were still active enough to give me order confirmation.

So has any one ordered recently? I ordered a throw lever on 02/28 and other than the confirmation email I haven't heard anything. I uses the contact form on the webpage 3 days ago and nothing.

2. Jon has a full time job in addition to Aadmount.

3. I am not of the impression that he is a procrastinator. I think he stays super busy.

4. His caps are arguably the best on the market.

You will get your caps, just be patient. His lack of comms is not ideal, but that is the way that it is. Do I think he should improve his comms ? Yes, but I don't get to make that decision. Someone above stated that Jon had said that he'd get nothing done if he tried to respond to every e-mail. I believe him.

It's been a couple of years, but I received the wrong ocular cap on an order. I e-mailed him and he got back to me right away. He sent a replacement quickly (it was 2 or 3 days, he had to make it). He even knew where my (the correct one for my order) ocular cap went. I offered to send the wrong one back, but he said "nah, don't worry about it".

So, yeah, comms aren't good In general. Would I buy his caps again ? Yes, without a doubt or concern. They are my first choice.

What are they made out of? They look 3d printed.

They are. I get the impression he has a quality printer(s). The caps seem to be free of lines that you'd see from a lower resolution printer. For all I know, he could have a shop full of printers and he downloads various files to different printers, depending on the types of caps that need to be run for that day.

I don't know what material he uses, but it's tough stuff.

I don't care how good the product is. And I don't care if it's a one man show, or a large company. If you are in business, and accept other peoples money, you can find an hour a day to respond to your customers. I fully understand that the firearms industry operates under the "the customer sucks and we are doing them a favor" philosophy, but luckily there are always other options.

I get it. I suspect that he's made the decision that this is the way that he needs to do business and he understands that he's going to lose some because of it. I don't have the impression that he's a dick or is arrogant, it's just that his time is very limited. In fact, now that I think about it, our comms back and forth were quite pleasant.

By way of another example, I just took delivery of a powder trickler accessory. It took over 5 months. Website stated 45 days delivery. Comms were barely adequate, but they did exist. Very small outfit, overwhelmed with orders. Would I buy again ? That's in question, it depends on how well the product I just received works. And, delivery time needs to come waaayyy down.

I know Jon a little and he is an occasionally quirky guy. That is not uncommon for gifted engineers. He is mist certainly not of the "the customer sucks and we are doing them a favor" type. He is, however, extraordinarily busy and does not have support staff to help with communications. He does make an exceptional product.

I run Aadland caps on almost everything I have. Running a one man show is not just a piece of cake, when you’re trying to respond to customers that are used to immediate gratification. You’re trying to balance total orders by SKU, and attempting to minimize machine/printer setup time-one off/low demand items might take a bit longer. And it seems he’s busy enough that building inventory currently sits behind his prioritized demand for an excellent product.
To be honest, how many gunsmiths do you know who’d rather spend their time on the phone with nonproductive chatter, than spend time behind his machinery, and getting your product out the door?
Will I keep buying from Aadland? Absolutely!

I’ve ordered 3 sets of SB PMII 5-25 covers from him, about a year apart. Each time they were out of stock and a backorder had to be placed. Every time they showed up in about 2 weeks, so you’re probably getting close.

Easy for you to say. As someone that has a full-time job as well as side gig, an hour a day for emails is NOT doable most days of the week.

I'm guessing he outsources to somewhere that has an SLS or MJF printer. Those caps aren't made by consumer or even "prosumer" grade 3D printers. I'd assume if he had the coin to have one of those printers at home he wouldn't need a full time job as well. The Formlabs Fuse is probably the cheapest of the type that I would ever consider buying and to get a full setup going you're looking at $55k https://formlabs.com/store/3d-printers/fuse-1-plus-build-your-own-package/#/package/

Material is probably a Nylon, which is great for the application.

Ok I see what the big deal is this thing is awesome. Showed up after 2 1/2 and fits perfect. I still think the lack of communication is a bit annoying but he backs it up with his work so I get it.

Has anyone bought Aadland caps for a Razor G3 6-36x56? I bought one set and I almost had to hammer the ocular cap onto the eyepiece. Trying to figure out if that was a one time issue or if those caps are just undersized and always need that.

If I remember correctly, I had to take a flat blade screw driver and "gently" open up the gap a "slight" bit where the screw is to slide it on.

My only complaint with them is that they DO fit tighter than they have to. I've only used them on SB PMII 5-25s (three sets). Since they have the clamping screw to tighten it, I don't know why the fit has to be so frickin' tight with the screw completely loosened. I mean, there's plenty of travel/clamping force available from the screw for a very tight fit if he just made them an easy slip-fit with the screw loosened. As @Baron23 mentioned, it does help to remove the screw and pry the slot open with a screwdriver when sliding them on.

Have the Aadland caps on other rifles without any problems. When they're brand new they're a little stiff when trying to manipulate the objective cap from behind the rifle, better a little tight than loose and always opening at the least appropriate time.

I also run the Exact Fit throw levers and these are a "game changer"! After you've racked your knuckles losing some skin along the way on the small metal throw levers you'll appreciate these throw levers. I also appreciate I don't have to get off the scope to search for the damn lever either, never going back to any other throw levers.

I just literally placed an order for a set for Sig Sauer's brand new TANGO-DMR 5-30X56, so I'm on the back ordered list and can't wait to get them.
