I read a Guns and Ammo article that suggests the 6 ARC caliber got adopted by a Special Ops unit for its superior capabilities over the 5.56 , with regard to engaging farther targets. Does anyone know if this is true? The article is attached.

The 6 ARC was originally developed for the DoD, commercial release came later.

Ok, I guess I’m behind on its development. Thanks for the info. I have been seeing guys talking about its use in competition because the low recoil allows you to stay in the scope and spot your own shots thru impact (or miss).

Hornady worked closely with the end-users, who were looking for something besides their SR-25s to use outside and inside of the house, that would be able to provide the same or better effective reach as 7.62 NATO without the penalties of the larger frame guns.

They did the initial tests in various shooting scenarios with 6.5 Grendel, then asked the customers if there were any instances where they would have preferred the SR-25s instead. They were unanimous in saying that no, the 6.5 Grendel was preferred.

Hornady then stated they could tweak it a little to make it more ideal for them, and did 6mm ARC.

There’s a good discussion of it in one of the Hornady podcasts.

Naval special warfare is using them currently. The geissele rifle. Been hearing some interesting things anbout the rifle and most of them not good, but they’re just secondhand rumors at this point.

That’s interesting, the “not good” part. Everything I read seems good about the cartridge. I have a 6.5 CM in AR10 platform. I don’t have a 6 ARC but a buddy of mine is getting one so I have been reading about it. He will probably hunt deer on my property with it and have it for other reasons.

Seems the phased gas array is causing some issues. Probably more due to the round they’re shooting but idk.
