    Maryland: Ship hits Francis Scott Key Bridge causing it to collapse

    A ship has hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, causing it to collapse, authorities said.

    Pretty dramatic collapse. I honestly don’t suspect anything nefarious…other than laziness and/or ineptitude, but this really sucks from a variety of angles, as mass casualty events are by definition I suppose.

    Not the least of which is that Uncle Potato will definitely bail out his voter base and put all American taxpayers on the hook for a replacement. At least it’s $$ not going to Ukraine, or to study the sexual proclivities of central asian frogs or some other such nonsense.
     
    If it's an American flagged ship then America should pay the damage.

    Ships turn slow. Maybe he was trying to throttle out of it to no avail. Who knows at this point.

    Had the same thing happen here in Florida with the SkyWay bridge near Tampa a few decades ago. Cargo ship took the bridge down with quite a few unfortunate motorists on top. Deadly. It was an accident waiting to happen here with the tides ripping through that part of Tampa Bay.

    Most of those bigger cargo ships are GPS/AI piloted.
    There was likely a mad scramble once someone noticed what was happening, lots of safeguards to overcome to take manual control.
    They also usually run skeleton crews of like 10 guys or less (admit it, not a single woman has that job) and for a big ass ship like that it might as well be deserted.

    They take a mile or two to stop and at least a 1/2 mile or so to turn around.
    Granted, it is tough to make out exactly how big the ship was from the video.....I'm going off standard oversea type container ship or the big oil tanker ship size.
    It's obvious the ship was not a small one....but the lighting kinda sux in the vid.

    They already stated 22 crew on board including the harbor pilot. This exact ship was also in another incident in Belgium

    The black smoke indicates that most likely the engine was running and that they did not "lose power". Might have lost steerage way, or the autopilot was set on the wrong course. The video shows the ship very far from the center of the span. I suspect that they were off course for several minutes, it was too late to turn, and they put the engine in reverse and gave it full power.

    Longer video shows the ship making a hard turn to starboard, so perhaps it was an autopilot issue.

    Not to be a contrarian, but our current "endless copyright" B.S. is because of Disney and corrupt politicans

    Back at that time copyright was 14 years and could be extended for a maximum of 14 years
    It was designed to be a fair balance between the person who created something and realizing that everything anyone creates comes from something someone did before them and eventually all human knowledge needs to go back to part of the human pool of freely available knowledge.

    Then the big corporations got involved...

    US Patent Office was one of the first government bureaus because Ben Franklin knew that invention and ingenuity needed to be protected and rewarded for America to thrive.

    Copyright probably came later. But inventions were protected from almost day one!

    Correct, patents were allowed quite some time before copyright was a thing in the USA.
    Some early famous writers bitched about the lack of copyright in the USA so how they had to make money was doing tours reading their books and doing book signings.

    Patents however also originally had to actually be something new, novel and unique and that you like actually invented & could demonstrate.
    They also had an expiration date that was a lot harder to extend.

    Today's patent system of course is well broken and corrupt.

    No. Hand steering when under pilotage by an experienced helmsman, overseen by a navigating officer with the Master in attendance. That is the standard requirement from all ports around the world.

    Even when under autopilot, it is a matter of seconds to take manual control. This is a requirement from Classification Rules.
