Hornady factory 6GT ammo accuracy

I found accuracy to be pretty good for the little bit I bought and tested. ~.5-.75 MOA from my AT-X for a five shot group. Did have an issue with pierced primers though which I still don't know what exactly caused that whether something with the firing pin or the cup thickness/strength.

Also had some pierced primers about a year ago from factory Hornady (impact 737). Accurate though…

Last year George Gardner per a FB post recommended people to use 0.059-0.062” firing pins. Primers were getting popped.

0.8 moa 10-shot groups at 400 out of my Proof steel prefit. Chrono is ugly though, SD’s in the high 30’s and ES near 100. Makes decent groups though, so I’m continuing with it.

Update: latest lots are shooting 1-1.5 MOA groups @ 100 yards. I’m bailing and going to try 6C.

Is GAP the only place to buy it? I’ve gotta make a decision between the 6GT and a 6CM this week. I’m leaning CM because of the more readily available factory ammo. I reload but I’m gonna try running factory stuff in this build.

GAP, Midsouth, K&M, Altus, lot of vendors sell it.

If memory serves me correctly Impact 737s were out of that small diameter range.......and boatloads of ammo with SRP have been shot with zero issue.......as we all know.

Maybe he was talking to a specific lot of Hornady.......hopefully not a blanket statement about all SRP cartridges.

Hornady doesn't make dogshit......but.......their consistency from lot to lot seems terrible as of late.

I have firsthand experience Hornady factory 7prc causing issues.......I mean like +60/-60fps ES over 25 shots. And it wasn't just a single extreme outlier each way......it was all over the place.

I ended up accuracy proofing those rifles with Federal Terminal Ascent hunting ammo......because it shot way better than Hornady MATCH ammo!!!

Not the first time Hornady MATCH ammo has failed me and others.

He was talking specifically about the factory 6GT Hornady loads in general at the time due to fact that people were popping them. People with 737s chimed in and said they didn’t have issues. Coincidentally though you can now get a 737 with a 0.060” firing pin.

The folks with Impact 737s who chimed in having no issues had not ordered from Hornady lately. Whatever primers they use more recently do not hold up to the .068" firing pin that comes standard in the Impact 737 short action. If you use a better primer, e.g., M205 or CCI450, the .068" firing pin is fine.

Like you said, you can now pay $465 and get a bolt with a .060" firing pin from Impact (Sold Out right now). Several folks have switched to it and fire the Hornady Match ammunition.

Hornady would not tell me what primer they are using right now.

To the OP, it is accurate ammunition. If you have the right size firing pin, go for it. It is good to have options.
