Has anyone thought of leaving the US for greener pastures?

    Some where in the US
Has anyone thought of or looked into leaving the US for South of the USA (i.e. Mexico, Central America or South America.) or South East Asia? For retirement purposes this looks attractive because of lower cost living. So, I thought I would ask the Hide what they think. Have at it.

Freedom is expensive, and worth every last penny. Not a one comes close to what we have, particularly the 2A. It’s not easy avoiding income taxes either, not without renouncing US citizenship at least.

I have over a decade spent out of the borders on the expat life, and been to over three dozen countries. Not a single one struck my eye as a place I wanted to live.

Our Republic is the last best place.

there are cheaper places to live, but there's no true right to free speech nor true right to bear arms, and not even a heavily armed married couple can fight off swarms of insane and angry third worlders on rampage.

If you're wanting more freedoms, peace, and solitude, move to Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska.

ETA: One can be free-est by staying in our Republic, or one can live cheaply in a not nearly as free foreign nation. I choose dangerous freedom over cheaper living.

The US sucks in that regards. Only three countries tax worldwide income. The amount of people who renounced their citizenship from the US almost double from 2022 to 2023. I am sure it was to get out of paying US taxes.

There are no greener pastures. This is the last bastion of hope on the globe
That may be true for now, but we are all just frogs in a boiling pot right now. We are not voting our way out of what's coming. The WEF and WHO want the US to change and it will eventually since they keep bringing in the best and brightest from those 3rd world countries. Our politicians have and are selling us out. Time is running out to safe the country.

The whole world is getting ready to go through some very bad times thanks to the Global Elites.
Everywhere is going to be affected.
What do you think is going to happen to foreigners in most other countries when the locals start getting really desperate for stuff?...

From the looks of it plenty of vacancies down south. But have you ever wondered how lucky we are to live here. To have been born here as opposed to elsewhere in this world. If it wasn't for all the corruption here things would not be so bad. We're all guilty of it in some way. I don't understand why people that don't want to be here stay. This death to America shit needs to stop. If you don't like it here GTFO. Where else can you go and rip into some retard for 8 pages because he's SAVAGE

It looks easy enough to just come back across the border as an illegal🤣

I have thought about it as a lower cost of living to retire, but then this whole wanting to enjoy my hobby of shooting sports when I retire gets in the way.

Medical concerns were once high on my list, but the medical care here in the US has fallen so low not sure it matters anymore

Then there are concerns of legal support, not really sure how to explain this. If you should need it for any reason, the US (except blue cities) has a reasonable legal process. Not that way in other countries. Most people don't need it, but you never know.

I might visit other countries when I retire, but pretty sure at this point not moving to one. I plan to move to a lower tax cheaper area of the US at this point.

What other country in the world has a real problem with Americans trying to get in, be it legally or otherwise...?

For migrants that are currently south of the US border, where do all roads lead...?

    That should tell you something.

not planning to ever leave. just thinking about hungary, vietnam, iceland, argentina is an interesting mental jerkoff. still better off here but in the future? who can say? as said things here are looking to go down the drain soon. don't know that my grands have considered a move. gr grands future looks dim and looking at a move for them makes sense to at least think about. everywhere that was to be retirement escape are in the shitter-mexico,panama,costa rica. who can know anything really?

Well it looks like the thing to do is leave for South America and get citizenship there. Then return by crossing the boarder illegally. Than living here will be more affordable ;)
Technically you could keep your job but not pay taxes anymore. When they come looking for you I been squatting in this house for 30+days and your new name is Pedro Ranchero. No habla Ingles amigo

Had a friend trying to talk me into buying property in the Dominican Republic. Property is cheap and according to him it's cheap to live there. I took a hard pass on that suggestion.

Of course, you would have an easy commute to vacation in Haiti.

I've already lived all over the world. Not retired just adventurous. There are a TON of really awesome places out there. It just depends on your goal.

It would be highly unlikely that I would ever give up my passport but I totally understand going to live in other places. I've already done it a bunch and will probably do it again.

Instead of just picking one place based on the brochure just travel around until you get some place that resonates with you. For example many people will see photos of Hawaii and dream about living in paradise. Of those people that actually go, about 90% to 95% don't last beyond 3 months.

On the other hand those with the right overall mentality will have a good time in most places they go to. Given there is ALWAYS some X factor that resonates with or turns off individuals. Typically you won't know what that is until you get there and experience it for yourself.

I fly all over this damn planet. Every place has its problems. Some cultures are better some are worse. The global elites are enjoying their lives while the rest of us peons are miserable. There will be a global shift. Its gonna suck. But thats where greener pastures lay.

The Union with all her problems is still the best place.

Got a bit of time and a keyboard to give a better response. This isn't a direct response to the OP, more in general on the topic itself.

To me, retiring abroad for lower cost of living comes to mind when someone has less than $100k in savings, no home, no pension, no kids to move in with (or anchor to the US for), and a modest social security is going to be their only income in retirement. It's a last ditch effort to stretch minimal assets through the golden years. If that's the case, then sure, go for the cheapest possible place while trying to find somewhere that at least has decent medical care. I'd first and foremost look at US territories, Puerto Rico immediately coming to mind.

Otherwise, there's a lot of places within the US that are still pretty cheap. Housing is the #1 cost in retirement, closely followed by medical care (health depending). While many zip codes are in the half mil for a 3/2 home in the burbs, there's a lot still in the low $100s if you want rural life, especially in the deep south or the middle America prairie. Shit, I'm going to put my house on the edge of the Black Hills up for sale later this year for about $200k. National average of $450k and going up? That's because of shitty cities like LA and Denver with overrated home values. Don't live there, live rural.

But one thing that I would never do, ever, is give up my guns. My ex moved my kids to Maryland, I lived close to three hours away in Virginia because I'll be damned if I'm going to deal with permits, restricted carry and transportation, and semi auto restrictions. That was just one state to another, much less than going to another country that outright bans ownership for anyone other than the state. Going to another nation? Hell the fuck no.

I had men of 14 different nationalities working for me at one point, Europeans, Africans, Asians, S. Americans. All of them were stunned what freedoms we had when it came to firearms. The entire rest of the Bill of Rights was completely foreign to them. I had some working for me that were wanted in their home country from when the communists took over and were hunting for anyone who worked against them previously (Nepalese). I had Indians that still dealt with the caste system and had relatives in outright slavery, they were just trying to save enough to buy their sister back into the family. Then there were the Fijians who were trying to save enough to get a well of their own so their wife and kids didn't have to travel two miles to get water every day.

Cheap countries are poor countries, dirt fucking poor. There's no medical infrastructure, no power grid that doesn't involve a rat's nest of wires coming out of every power drop, high crime, shitty roads, and cops hustling you at every checkpoint if they think you have three dollars in your pocket.

I'll be bagging groceries and flipping burgers at 94 to make ends meet before I think about leaving my country for a lower cost of living retirement. Instead, I'm saving my money, working a career with a good pension at the end, and paying off the house as fast as I can to not have a single bit of debt within a decade of my retirement date so the wife and I can have our nice retirement on 40 paid in full acres and a house that will last well beyond our years.

But, if you want to go…

    Are you still here?

My wife and I have seriously thought about it, especially if Biden and the Dems steal this election too. And with that comes another 10-20 million additional illegals that we get to pay for. We pay taxes through the roof for jack shit in return. Our healthcare system sucks. Our education system sucks. The wife works for a Danish company and I have access to European Union citizenship due to family ties. So we have options, but it would be a giant leap of faith. At least in the Nordic countries firearms ownership is not terribly different than ours. As little as 10 years ago the thought would never have even crossed my mind. But this country is seriously circling the drain due to leftist scum that have infiltrated every level of government. And I only see it getting 10x worse, especially if Trump loses.

There is a reason why everybody from elsewhere is trying to get here, the big BX in the sky.

I want to preface this with the time frame a I was in these places.....80's and 90's

I have lived in a few places in South America and traveled extensively there. Unfortunately things have changed for the worse in places I would have considered in the past.

Mexico. A few places might be OK but for the most part no. You can actually own property there. Before you got a 99 year lease. You have to get a Mexican Green Card tho. Alamos in Sonora used to be something I was interested in. Now it has too many gringos

Costa Rica. Nice place with generally good folks but it is very expensive now if you want what you got in the states. You could live cheap but not on the beach. Crime has risen but not like its neighbors. Gringo expats have fucked up prices

Panama. Forget it. I was there in 88, 90 and 91. I didn't want to be there then. Some nice folks up north but I didn't feel comfortable there.

Nicaragua. Communist dictatorship shithole. I spent some time there in 86. Could not wait to get back to Costa Rica. I'm sure its about the same.

El Salvador. When I was there I generally liked it but I was young and very stupid. It was before the Mara Salvatrucha 13 took hold. The new President is sure cleaning house. Stay tuned.

Honduras. Some nice folks there but the crime is really bad especially Tegucigalpa.

Belize. I was seriously considering moving there after I retired. English is spoken, beautiful place prices were good on real estate especially if you wanted some property inland, like a plantation. Crime is bad there now because of the neighbors. Quick flights to Texas though.

Columbia is still really cheap. Crime is bad because of the Venezuelans.

Ecuador. Very beautiful place with awesome people. I would have lived there after retirement because of my connections there but all my contacts have for the most part have left and came to the US because of the Venezuelan crime wave. Prices are on the rise. Medical care is good if you can pay for it. Last time I was there was 94. Peru and Ecuador had a tif over international boundaries. The Ecuadorians would have cleaned house if there wasn't a peace accord.

Peru. I like some of the places there and the people for the most part. The rural people were really nice. Not sure what real estate prices are like these days.

Been other places in SA but not long enough to really make a call. Chile might be an option. Paraguay and Uruguay would be worth exploring. Argentina might be an option with the new Presidente if the communists don't assassinate him too soon.

IF there is a better place anywhere in the world, you can bet the letter agencies are scheming to overthrow that place soon. They're damn good at it, just look at DC. And they are but one tentacle of the beast. When the SHTF, it will be worldwide and absolutely no one will be able to hide from it for long. Our only Savior is not of this world.

Take a good hard look at real life before fawning over Denmark or any of the Nordic countries.
You don't like what this country is becoming... well they are 10 years ahead of us in all the same evil.
Sure you say, so what if I pay about 75% of my income in taxes (50% tax, 25% VAT) at least I get "free healthcare" until you actually need some healthcare pronto and find out... the waiting list...

Also what the news doesn't show you is those countries are being fully invaded by muslims and are fast turning into muslim ghetto world.

Oh and freedom? that's not a thing there at all like it is here.

Nice places to VISIT that's about it...

In all honesty, I would live in New Zealand in a New York minute if they’d let me in, but they have some fairly stringent immigration policies……..
Serious question, why? Is that the place where they took everyone's guns away forcefully?

It obviously depends on where you live and what you earn in the US vs what you'd be going to in NZ.
But I'm not sure NZ is really that great if you big into shooting sports.
