I graduated in 1980, small town central Ohio, population of around 14,000. All of us guys that drove trucks had gun racks and had 12ga and/or .22's in this racks .Especially during any of the hunting seasons. We drove and parked our trucks in the high school parking lot with guns in racks and no-one thought a thing about it. Different world and society back then. Personally I believe we have went backwards in so many ways in our culture and society.

Same here in VT high school, class of 84... We all had Buck Folding knives on our belts, too. Noone thought a thing about it!

Elementary school age, Cub Scout member. On days we had "den" meetings after school at one of the members homes, we wore our uniforms to school. Part of the uniform was our folding knives which hung from a hook on our belt. We could have the knives on us at school as long as we followed 3 rules:
1. They were to never to be used as a weapon
2. They were never to be used to mark or scratch on our desks
3. They were never to be used to cut off some girls ponytail. Yes, that is a very true rule
Violation of any of these rules led to confiscation, punishment, and you and all other scouts would never be allowed to have knives at school again. Greatest fear of scouts? Causing your fellow scouts not to be allowed to carry their knives because of something you did wrong. Different times for sure.

I got kicked out of Cub Scouts...for eating Brownies.

Joke but I did get kicked out...for fighting.

Same in Virginia. At about 12 my father taught me how to make black powder. That quickly morphed into more potent explosives. All was good, including setting the basement ablaze (very small fire, only lost my eyebrows), until we started making pipe bombs. The cops confiscated one and put it under a 55 gallon steel drum. Blew it to shreds and about 80 feet high. Pop got a call and that was the end of that. :cool: "He was such a a good child, I dont know what happened to him.". LOL.

My scouting came to an end when I got caught with a bottle of Cutty Sark whiskey on a winter camp out. I was only 12 and couldn’t afford something better


I honestly wasn’t drinking it—I figured it would be a good way to get a fire started

Graduated in ‘72, had the same thing and no one locked their doors and on warm days even left the windows down. Never any problems. Small town Kansas

Back when it was understood that with freedom, comes responsibility. And people took that responsibility seriously.

How to we get back to that…and away from the entitlement that permeates our culture now? I honestly don’t know what the right answer will be, but hope it doesn’t take a collapse and rebuilding of civilization. We worked so hard to get where we are…well, where were anyway, and I don’t want my kids or grandkids to have to rebuild from scratch.

We just found out our son and his wife are having our first grandchild in September (!) and it’s definitely changed our perspective. I’m hopeful, but there’s certainly a lot more anxiousness going into my thought processes these days.
