Building out a new dmr-ish rifle. I live in a ban state, so there’s zero chance of a suppressor for me, so no worries about attaching a can. I will use this for a duty capacity and some occasional gas gun competitions . Need a solid muzzle device. Prefer a flash hider , but not opposed to a comp/brake but I don’t want crazy concussion or loudness.

Here’s the build:
18” white oak 1:7 (5.56)
Geiselle mk16 15” rail
Geissele receiver set
Bcm bcg
Ssa-e
NF 4-16 ATACR
Bcm sopmod stock

Do you need flash suppression? I mean, you don’t want blast or concussion or noise, and can’t use a suppressor. If you don’t actually need flash suppression, why not a thread protector and call it good? Cheap, light weight, no timing, no added length…

I mean, if I’m gonna thread something on the end of it, I might as well get some level of performance.

I can’t suppress it. So I may as well go with a flash hider or a comp. I tend to not like brakes and comps as they are just so loud and concussive.

Surefire muzzle break end of story, in Kalifornia too btw.

Very few people need & few reasons for a flash hider in my opinion

Reasons some shooters might want a FH:

* Might use the rifle at night
* Don't have a suppressor
* Need to protect your threads
* Don't want the noise/blast/flash/cost of a dedicated comp or brake

Am I best off running a spare A2 birdcage?
An A2 birdcage is just fine, and makes a great all-around option for non-suppressed shooters to run IMHO. I saw a small but noticeable improvement in comp performance while keeping all other A2 benefits when I upgraded to the FCD 6315 I linked. But it's $50 versus a fraction of that for an A2, not worth it for many. If you have an A2 I'd start with that.

YHM phantom are great A2 style (closed bottom) flash hiders/comp if you don’t mind having an aluminum muzzle device. They’re on clearance right now at Optics Planet for like $25. Pretty good deal!!

You could try a Witt Machine SME.

These brakes are amazing for the recoil reduction for the size, but they are loud.

Either the Gen 2 or the Gen 4 are great, but prices have gone up.

I run a PVA jet blast on my 20” that I use for longer range steel. I have zero complaints with it but I’m not concussion sensitive like some people are I guess. I run hellfires or APA’s on all my bolt guns from 6 dasher to 6.5 prc and I don’t notice any concussion from them.

Yup the PVA Jet Blast is an excellent brake and keeps blast off shooter. Got one on my 6ARC when not using my can.
