Join contest SubscribeMy father's heritage was English, Irish, Scottish. Beyond that, I don't know what clan we are from though I have an idea based on my last name. Not always indicative but often the case. For example, Cooper (not my name) comes from the occupation of a cooper, a maker of whiskey barrels. I learned that studying about Glenfiddich scotch whisky. Jack Daniels is only allowed to age so many batchs of bourbon on a barrel and must discard. Instead, they disassemble the barrels and sell them to distilleries overseas, such as Glenfiddich. Over there, a cooper re-assembles it for use.I think many people take for granted that they know their family’s history, I’m 51 and will never know who my paternal grandfather is. I couldn’t even confirm my indigenous side from my maternal grandfather until he passed away. Thank goodness one of my cousins that I didn’t know until recently did all the legwork on our indigenous background and lives in the area. The missions apparently have good record keeping so our ancestry is traced back to the late 1700’s. So my boys and I have been in a tribe for over 6 years. It’s very interesting to say the least.

The story, as far as I've been able to sort it out, is most of the peoples of the Americas are descended from the Nahua (who speak Nahuatl) who crossed the land bridge ages ago and slowly worked their way south. There is a small population of near pure blooded Nahua people in the most remote part of the Mexican state of Guerrero who were never completely subjugated by the Spanish. Even the Mexican army treads very lightly in ther territory. I was in a bar drinking with some Mexican friends in Oaxaca City. One really short stocky dark skinned (not negroid, just dark) mentioned that he was Nahua. Everyone else at the table stopped talking for a moment, like they were in awe.Origins
Distribution map of the Esselen language in California prior to contact with European cultures
Archaeological and linguistic evidence indicates that the original people's territory once extended much farther north, into the San Francisco Bay Area, until they were displaced by the entrance of Ohlone people. Based on linguistic evidence, Richard Levy places the displacement at around AD 500.[2][3] Breschini and Haversat place the entry of Ohlone speakers into the Monterey area prior to 200 B.C. based on multiple lines of evidence. Carbon dating of excavated sites places the Esselen in the Big Sur since circa 2630 BCE.[4] Recently, however, researchers have obtained a radiocarbon date from coastal Esselen territory in the Big Sur River drainage dated prior to 6,500 years ago (archeological site CA-MNT-88).[5]

So you gave them your DNA?Surnames mean nothing, a BigY700 test at FTDNA will give you your Haplogroup and downstream genetic mutations. Certain mutations are associated with certain Clans. I am Bell Beaker, R1b-L21 that over time moved over to Ireland , and then back to Scotland as a Gael of Dal Riata as a Sept of Clan Donald. Scotland is a blend of Gaels, Anglo Saxon, Jute, Norman. Robert the Bruce ,his mother was a Scot, father's line, 1066 Norman. My surname project has three distinctive genetic lines that use the surname, none of the three are related and represent different invasion timelines, Beaker being the oldest.
Lose a war? Or two?So, if any one could lend a hand, it would be you.
Interesting how tribes and peoples often were described by something simple.
For example, the word kansas means "people of the south wind," also the inspiration for the hit song by the band, Kansas. Slight side story:
One of the things that irked Steve Walsh, the most well known singer and the one everyone knows, was people asking about his heritage and if he was native american. He has that look but does not know because he was adopted and evidently could not get the information and now is not interested. Granted, Steve is a bit shy. Second singer and violinist Robby Steinhardt often did the patter between songs.
Now, how do I celebrate that my maternal grandfather was from Germany?![]()

That's amazing. Then, again, the oldest human was found in Africa, leading many to think that humans, as a species, started there. If that makes us all Afrikan or African by descent, then I wonder what all the unrest is for.
Interesting. My wife’s father was Scottish and his last name was Donald. His ancestry traced back to clan Donald, before it was wiped out by the clan wars. We visited the Donald clan museum on the isle of Skye a bunch of years back. A Clan Chief could make anyone a member of a clan, pledge of loyalty is all it took, genetics were not an issue, Clan Law was democratic, as opposed to Feudal Law.
Clan Donald were Lords of the Isles, many branches but self destructed.Interesting. My wife’s father was Scottish and his last name was Donald.
