22 ARC & 95 SMKs

I’ve ran them in my .22BR. I’ve only ran them with 6.5 Sta-Ball and RL-16.
They shoot well, but after running through a couple hundred, I kind of feel like 6.5 Sta-Ball is a bit too slow. RL-16 was better, but now $80/lb if you can find it.
About to give 85.5’s and Bi Game a whirl….

I haven’t ARC’ed yet, though eyeballing one pretty hard. BTW, I’m assuming you’re running a bolt gun. The cases are close BUT THE ARC IS A SMALLER CASE.

Velocities in a 24” .22BR ran 2800-2850. I’d look for 2700 or so in an ARC Bolt Gun with the same length barrel.

Hogdon has ARC data for the 95, albeit at gas gun pressure.

I’ve got some 95’s left, but I’m going to try 85.5 Bergers and Big Game. Just kinda feel like the 95’s are a bit bit for the case and 6.5 Sta Ball is a bit too slow.

FWIW, for 95’s in the ARC, I’d look for something slower than TAC.

22 ARC isnt going to have enough powder in the case for the 95smk AND you'll need a throated barrel or LONG freebore reamer.

I shoot 22br heavily and 22GT and I wont even shoot them in my 22br.

In my 28" 22GT 38gr H4831sc I get 2952 SD 6 and 0.5moa accuracy.

Gonna be slowww in 22 ARC

Very interesting.

Would 2850 fps be possible with some of the faster powders in a 26inch tube with bolt gun pressure?

Hornady's own 22 ARC bolt gun load data has RL15 at 28.4 grains of powder for 2900 fps in a 24 inch barrel with the 88 eldm bullets.

I realize that the SD and accuracy potential is not as great as the go to Varget/H4350 powders but the PRS loads seem to be right around that velocity.

95smk @ 2850 in ARC with a 26" barrel? Not even close.

The ultimate question...why? Why would you even waste time and money on trying to get a 95smk uo to those velocities in a bolt gun? ARC was created to feed from a mag in an AR.

There are multiple bolt gun calibers with excellent brass and loads established to do what your asking. If you want to shoot 95smk in a bolt gun, go right to 22GT for a nice happy medium of barrel life and good velocity and accuracy.

I’ve shot the 95gr SMKs in my 22 BRA and found they shot amazing at 100 but lacked enough spin to reach their advertised BC. 32.4gr H4350, 2920 fps. Even with a 1:7 and 300,000 RPM the G7 trued at 0.283 compared to the 0.299 Sierra states. And this was with a 0.160” freebore reamer to fit these ultra long bullets. I can shoot 90 SMKs a lot easier and faster with a 0.283 or my preferred Berger 85.5 LRHT. I’m not going to shoot the 95 any more other than for fire forming use (the length makes them easy to jam in the lands.) The 95gr SMKs have too many extremes to overcome to make them worth the trouble.

I think your going to have a hard time with a 22 ARC:
- not enough case capacity to get speed. These have extreme bearing surface and like slow powders.
- going to require a crazy fast twist to get the full BC, 1:6.5 at least and maybe even 1:6 at slow ARC speeds. And I’ve heard they blow up also at high RPM so that’s another negative.

Stick with a projectile better suited for the ARC unless you want a challenge.

I tried the 95 smk in my 22br and couldn’t get it high enough in velocity to be competitive at 1000 but the 90 Atip works great. I am running 31.0 rl16 for 2950. With a bc of .6 it is really good. My come up at 1000 is 24.5 which is where my 260 and 6x47L were.

The ARC is too small a case to handle thise bullets. Period

Exactly my findings in 22BR as well and its got more capacity then 22 ARC... 85-90gr are the sweet spot for 22BR. My go to load is 90 SMK @ 3000fps. Stupid accurate, such an awesome cartridge!

ARC was designed for an AR to fit in mags. There is no reason to shoot it in a Bolt gun, there are so many better suited and well established cartridges for that. The ONLY reason I could see ARC making sense in a bolt gun is someone that doesnt reload and wants to solely shoot factory ammo which isnt going to exist really in BR or GT...
