Backup generators - I've used them for decades. My take..

Out of all fuel options, diesel has the most energy content per gallon. It has a longer shelf life than gasoline, but for long-term storage, propane is king. Do you NEED to bury the tank? That seems excessive, but I’m in rural Alabama and can have a backhoe dig me a hole for $200, so whadda I know? 🥴
I'm up in Tn. You can't just burry an above ground tank.

I've had 2 fires on the property since we've had it. One caused by a neighbor being an idiot and another by a fire bug running around setting brush fires. I'd rather not have 1000 gal of propane in close proximity to the house above ground.

They have a valve that blows off if there is a fire. Seen it more than once.
One was next to a house that burned down, it was nighttime and as the tank got too much pressure from heat it would blow a torch of flame about 10’ into the air for a moment then calm down.
It will be fine. :)

. If you want to stay married and keep your kids from running away from home, don't think about anything smaller.

First off, thank you very much for sharing your experiences and written post & link. But, this sentence really caught me off guard.

Was that sentence written in sarcasm? Or from first hand, near family nucleus separation from a temporary hardship? Or, as I call it, "A minor inconvenience. Let's deal with it." You can DM the answer to if you want. But, I am interested into what led you to making this comment and if this opinion stemmed from experience. Experiences endured in this circumstance is a lesson for any man to learn. Thx

There are Propane tanks of all sizes designed for underground use.

All fuels & their engines have draw backs, know them before choosing.
Just remember the lower the speed the better but never buy anything that has to spin at >3000-3600rpm for a whole house set up. No matter who makes it. Also never ever buy a whole house unit if that mfg sells their junk in big box stores even repackaged under a different name. If its heavily advertised you can bank its a POS.

What I meant was that your wife and kids won't like doing without all the "comforts" just because you bought a generator that was too small to run them all.

In preparation for Huricaine season (the brunt of it), I did my annual start up and run test of my WGEN9500DF. Started on the frrst attampt after 1 year. Ran perfectly for 1hr. Didn't put it under any significant load, though. I just wanted to ensure it ran. Which it did.

Still under $1000.00 on Amazon. Barely, but under 1K.

Will break 100F today, so mild concern of a brown out.

Our natural gas home standby generator needs a new battery. Won't auto start.

I was thinking to get a new battery at Costco our last block off, however didn't put it on a list. So forgot about it on that shop. Now it is on the list & will get one the next block off.

Worst case, I can jump start it using a jump pack I have in my truck...
