I shot an AI today, and I liked it

+1. I've been shooting pdogs off a table off my Jeep hood. Sandbags with range cards plastered all over the table. Mostly dasher and 6br. Prefer the roundish chassis on the AT as nothing is ever flat and the cooler looking AX can bite a bit. 22-250 in an AI must deliver spectacular hits, moved from a .220 swift to 6br, 260, and dasher for BBL life. You see a lot more pink mist than I do. That part I miss.
I’m not a reloader. I shoot the Hornady 50gr Superperformance in my 22-250. Chrono’ed at 4145 fps during a hot day lol (gotta zoom up on the Garmin)

Start about here to see some 22-250 explosions. I have some earlier in the thread too, but they are of my 204.

I've got an AT-X v2 from about 8 - 10 mos before the atx-c dropped and love it. Absolute hammer of a rifle. I've got an AXSR that was put together from new parts and shot it at the last 2 ELRs which also is just extremely accurate.
At this point the only other bolt guns are my TL3 in a magnesium chassis for NRL hunter matches and my fun yote tl3 to finally have a 223 AI.

Why no AI for a 6mm comp gun? Just curious. It can’t be for weight lol as some of the comp guns I have seen are on the ridiculous side lol. But if you can hump it then I say let them run whatever they want. So like I said, I know it’s not weight so why wouldn’t you run them in that set up?
Has nothing to do with weight or if I’d run them or not. I don’t shoot prs so my statement was just in general I’ll never use them for that role. I bang steel and kill deer with mine.

308
260
300 WSM

Those are my AI platforms

My comp gun is a custom for fclass in 284. If I shot comps with the AI I’d heavily consider a 6mm with the updated mags they have now. I just have no use for it in my current setup. So I never see myself running them. Not that they can’t or won’t fill the role well

Thank you

That’s the newest adventure and came from @TheBigCountry

Originally looked like this. Got a Manzella 260 barrel and Black Canyon Customs 300 WSM Barrel for it

Here’s my other and the original gangster in 308

This one hits fields 1-3 times a week currently for deer.

That would be my main criticism of AI as a PRS/Comp gun. Many of us (ok mainly me, but I see it elsewhere) like to add whiz-its and what-nots and also fine tune the weight(aka Balence) and this is where the AI really falls down (I would LOVE to shoot 7PRCW in my ATX for F class as well). Its not so much that dick-mod is bad, is that there are really no accessories--they are all the other format(s). Trying to get a thumb shelf, 2 round quiver, etc is just always a PITA. It can be done, but with a couple of jobs and the bear pit to troll, i just run outta time. I need an easy button.

But as someone else mentioned, in a pinch you can use it as a club and it will still hold zero. I haven't actually used mine as a club, but I've beat on it pretty hard and it is dead nutz reliable, return to zero to the point of where in a pinch I don't have to check it even after pulling a barrel for cleaning and I got lazy and behind on my schedule.

I even like 2 stage triggers cause of the ATX--(you know the one that always breaks according to certain people around here). After using it, I've had to screw with all my other triggers as the ATX was just "sweet"

TBH I joke about 12lb lift--in real time I can't tell the difference and its to the point where I can tell if a round loads stiff or ejects hard. If you really care about bolt lift, go lift some wieghts. I can barely bench press the bar, and I can handle it. pffft.

Its a very good rifle: Not the rifle for PRS/tinkerers. Probably paying for the name. Has its limitations, but what it does, it does VERY well. Mine is now an F-Class gun as I have to shoot lefty in PRS due to my eye. And lets not even get started on LH AIs..... Probably not going hunting with it as mine has a Truck Axel Barrel, but slap a normal barrel on it, and its g2g (would also have to change scope, but as I mentioned, its setup for F-class).

How many deer are you killing?
I won’t give out numbers but we shoot for 3-4 months straight on crop permits (corn/alfalfa) for about 5-8 farms on average then throughout the rest of the year on block permits issued to Christmas Tree farms for damage to trees (winter) or silage storage areas in winter/spring. Then some permits for deer in airports

Don’t worry it’s a heavy population around us. We barely make a dent it seems

Oh, I am not complaining. I was wondering as my good friend lives down in MN and if they are similar I may need to have him start asking around to all the farmers to see if anyone needs depredation help, haha.

Here’s a corn field I took pics of two days ago. This is the area we hunt primarily for regular firearm season. This gets hit decent with block permits. Just to give you an idea of what damage in the UP of Michigan can look like. This needs to be addressed a touch more I think 🤪

In the better spots of this field the corn is 6-8 feet currently. Obviously these areas won’t make it there haha

There used to be some fields just south of me that looked like that. After they were cut, it was nothing to see 50-75 deer in each of them. Now, after a few years of crop damage permits & 8' fences, no more deer.

The bitch of it is the closest one to me is 1 1/4 miles away. I don't see as many deer as I used to. :( I used to see 15-20 on an afternoon hunt. Now it's maybe 5-6, and usually the same couple does & fawns.

Crop damage is all antlerless through the summer. So the areas shot for years here just end up loaded with bucks instead.

We’ve shot fields where it was nothing to see 150+ deer in them a night. 40-80 acre fields. There’s less deer in them now but the buck to doe ratio is much better and you actually see more bucks and shooter bucks in it now than when there was 150 deer. Of course not every field or area has that many deer in it though.

We have wolves and lots of them up here now. If you go 50 miles north of me you can sit all hunting season and see nothing but canines

I have been very impressed with my AT ever since I purchased it. I run a 24" 6.5 CM barrel and 16" .308 barrel. I only need .2 MIL left and .1 MIL up when I swap from 6.5 to .308, to be zeroed in my scope at 100 yards. It has been the most boringly-reliable rifle and I will never sell it. The factory chassis never fit me so I decided to be sacrilegious and make it perfect.

This is in "hunting trim" with the .308 barrel and Specwar762.

AI is in the varsity... but also shoot a Sako TRG. The are in an RCH of each other in terms of being at the top of the game.

I eneded up being in the Priesthood of the TRG. But the AI was absolutely the equal and both are unreal in terms of being able to shoot holes in holes.

Get an AI. For sure. It will be epic. And like nothing else you ever shot. But try a TRG... because you might want to go all "Herr Bork Bork Bork Bork" Nordic Swedish/Finnish Chef and think about a -22 or -42 Sako.

I sorted of ended up in the Sako world by accident because I got an LE discount on a demo folder for great $$$ cheap c. 2008/9. But the AI was also at top of list. I still have my TRG Folder duty rifle and it is unreal repeatable. But if I had gone the AI route... I'd probably still have that and it would be unreal repeatable.

Awesome you got to try one. Now buy it. And you can look down on all the poors. Except us TRG Guys. We'll look down on the poors together. Because.... well... Tier One.

Sirhr
But……i have seen a lot dipshit with money with the best of everything mentally and yet can’t shoot a dingo for shit.

My area is all private land, mostly < 20 acres. A lot of my neighbors will shoot anything they see. I've owned this place for 25 years, and seen exactly one 10 point in that time, well out of bow range. I've killed several 8 points, but that's really the best I can expect.
