I’ll start out and then others can come along and tell you if I am wrong. From a PRS new shooter perspective you want to make sure that you have the minimum needed to be competitive. To me that means a FFP mil scope with some type of mil reticle and the ability to dial elevation and windage. You will mostly shoot on 12-15 power so make sure that your scope has at least that magnification. The high end scopes are nicer but not necessarily needed. I started out with a Vortex Venom 3-15 (does not dial windage); it is probably the lowest cost scope that meets minimum requirements. I then quickly moved to a Venom 5-25 (which is what I recommend as a minimum entry scope) because you can many times find them on sale for the same price as a Venom 3-15. They don’t have illumination, but you don’t need it for shooting PRS or most scenarios for that matter. Those are my thoughts if you want to start on a budget. I still have 2 Venoms that I still use on a hunting rifle and a PRS gas gun. Or you can just jump right into the deep end with any number of expensive high end scopes, they all will work. I now use a Vortex Razor on my PRS rifle and it works great for me.
