6.5 PRC in a shortie?

I have cut a bunch of them for hunters, most of them are using them either in a blind/truck or they're sling hunting from trees and need a backpack-able rifle.

The numbers below are from a barrel that we made for a local customer who only shot factory ammo. It started life as a 6.5 Creed at 26" long and shot really well. He decided to try sling hunting and immediately decided it needed to be cut down. Then he decided it also needed to be faster after his first range trip (he didn't even give me chrono data, just said it was a rainbow). So we took the barrel back and opened it to a 6.5 PRC

26" Osprey 7.5 twist 6.5 Creed, 140 ELDm factory ammo: 2860 fps
16.5" cut down and opened to 6.5 PRC, 140 ELDm factory ammo: 2845 fps

I have blanks in stock for any stainless contour you want, we contour and flute in house. I also have carbon blanks on the shelf that can finish from 16.5 - 26" long.

Thats better speed from a 16.5” and a 140 than I would have guessed.

I get 2840ish from a 16.5” 6.5 creed and a 123 bullet (123 gr Scenar).
When I get time, am going to test the 123 Absolute Hammer bullets to see if I actually gain some speed like they say (friend reports he saw +/-250 fps gain with them).

For 200 yds and in, I would not go 6.5 PRC over 6.5 creed.
And yes, I shoot both in light hunting configurations.

Not sure I would do the 6,5 PRC again. 🤷‍♂️

He got 250fps over the 140 ELDm or over the 123 Scenar? Seems hard to believe he would see 250fps with the same weight bullet, I've not seen something like that in all the monolithics testing that I've done over the last 15 years.

250fps extra with the 123 Absolute Hammer over another 123 gr bullet. Not sure if it was eldm, scenar, different cup/core, or a different solid design like one of theirs, a Barnes, or yours.

Hammer claims 3-400 fps gain with that particular bullet on their webpage.

If I can break 3k at the muzzle with a 123 gr copper solid an a 16.5” 6,5 creed I would be blown away.

Any first hand experience with a short barrel suppressed 6.5PRC?
Main use is blind hunting out to 200 yds.
Not sure what you consider "Short"...Mine is 18, going into season 5 with it...Couldn't be happier.
All my hunting rifles are 18 max...so I consider short to be more like an SBR. Just chopped a 22 creed to 13" and a 6 creed to 15"

There are other factors in play here. Short barrels w/suppressors, inexperienced hunters (in some cases) and blinds that boom like a bass drum (when you're trying to be silent) if you bump a wall or overhead. Other factors as well, too many to list.

That is incredibly hard to believe, especially when doing competitor testing. We see 3050 with our 122 in a 20" barreled 6.5 Creed and 3380 with a 6.5 PRC of the same length.

That being said, if the data is there and repeatable so be it.

What powders are you using in each for those speeds?

I have a light 22” 6.5 PRC and would LOVE to see near 3400 fps with a copper solid.

2950ish (going off loose guess of loss of 25fps per inch) in a 16.5” 6.5 creed would be amazing too.

The PRC I used (probably too much) RL23 and H4350, I think the 4350 was giving me abotu 50 fps less.
The 25 fps/inch number really doesn't work for very short barrels or for these calibers. I shot some of our 122's from a 16"Creed that we cut down for a local farmer and he was saying it was more like 2775/2800 when he really leaned on it. I don't know waht he was doing for powder or load data though. Fun rifle to shoot, especially handy from a truck window chasing animals out of the orchards.

6.5PRC for 200 yards...?!?!?!?!?! Why the hell would you do that...?!?!?! Just buy a .308, or if you're stuck on 6.5, do a 6.5x47.

WTF not, not your money.
Some people will argue with a stop sign.

Just get a 7mm BC...it's perfect for short barreled hunters.
Lee is coming out with reloading dies.

I already reload it... low recoil round with 120 gr Barnes in 20" barrel over 3600 fps with steel case reloads, and 3380 fps in brass cases....or just shoot 170 gr factory loads at 3100 fps in 20" barrel with excellent accuracy.
16" barrels are available with about 140 fps loss in velocity over the 20" barrel.

But for 200 yds a 308 16" will be cheap, accurate, and plenty of energy. I was able to hit 2900 fps with 155 grs but accuracy was at 2875 fps in a 16" 308.

Here is a 6 lb AR 10 shooting 155s at 2815 fps, a standard starting load with 2000MR... for 200 yds no use wasting your money on a 16" 6.5 PRC...unless you want to... its your money, your choice...but the deer won't know the difference.
And the 7mm BC smokes the PRCs especially in short barrels...should seriously take a look at it...but it's extra power is not required for a 200 yd max round for deer either...a perfect chore for the 308 Win.

Already have a couple of .308's.
...and some people are dumb as fuck...
mkhollman74.....So much for "Respect All"!!!!
I just wanted first hand experience, which you obviously don't have .
Some dumb as fuck goofy bastards just expect everyone to bow to their wishes.
The guy building the 6.5 PRC just sold 49 Rifles of an extensive collection and you or I am not one to really question what he wants to spend HIS $$$$$ on.
Wouldn't it be nice to afford that, mkollman74 whoever in the fuck you are, he could buy you and throw you away.
And wouldn't it be nice to have a civilized exchange of ideas without being insulted.

Respect is earned. Respect includes being honest. I never asked anyone to "bow to my wishes" I asked two questions. I don't need experience with shoving an icepick into my eyeball to know its stupid as hell. You punched first, I counterpunched. Victim on...

Chalk me up as a dumb fuck. Not exactly the same but FWIW Im working up a load in a suppressed 16.5" 25 PRC shooting Hammer bullets. I had the 95 gr HHT at 3265 and 90 gr Absolute up to 3481 against pressure. Ill probably run the AH somewhere in the 3300 range
