My teenage son got his wisdom teeth removed this morning. Sucks to be him.

But last week I was talking to some coworkers about it and there was a wild story.

To preface this story my coworker said his mother was a single mom of four boys, so she did the best she could.

He said that he was not knocked out for it, but he said that he miserable. He said that night his mother went to McDonald’s and bought everyone dinner. He got a quarter pounder and his mother threw it into the blender.

I asked if he ate it and he said he took a spoonful and it was so awful that he didn’t eat any more of it.

My story was rather routine. Hurt for a week or so and had to be really gentle eating. But otherwise nothing remarkable.

Anyone else have a wild wisdom teeth removal story I can share with my son?

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed at one time/visit by the oral surgeon when I was 16-17 y/o. He numbed me up pretty good but was not asleep by any means, and kept the meds coming since the roots for all 4 wisdom teeth were wrapped around my jaw bones (for lack of a better term and that's how he described). It took longer than he thought it would since a root tip broke off on 3 out of the 4, so he had to go "fishing" for the small broken tips to avoid infections, etc. The one tooth that did not break off a tip was the hardest to remove he said.

No pain meds for the aftermath, he told me to stop and get a 6 pack or 2, and don't drive after I started the pain prevention process. LOL. Mom was a bit upset with the oral surgeon for his "pain meds", especially when I got home with the beer.

Had all 4 removed in the early 80's. Watching the local news the next morning, saw my oral surgeon being led out of his office in handcuffs by
the US Marshall's Office. Time of his arrest was about 30 minutes after my surgery. He was charged with murder for hire of Sam Garrison, who defended Nixon during the impeachment hearings.

I had all 4 removed in 2020 when I was 45 years old. For years my dentists had lied saying they fit...only for me to wake up one day in pain. Xray showed they did not fit.

Fast forward to surgery and I came to with the surgeon/dentist chick kneeling on my chest with I guess a long chisel wailing on my tooth. My jaw and mouth were really swollen so it was hard to get in there I think, but either way they either calculated the sleepy stuff wrong, or it took longer than they thought. Needless to say I was pissed.

It took them a few mins to realize I was awake. One of the helpers looked over and noticed and whispered it to the surgeon. I couldn't move out of fear of her sending that thing through my cheek or jawbone. Once they finished and took me to the recovery room I was cussing them out and calling them sadists. My mouth was full of gauze so it probably did not come out clearly, but I could see the look of panic in their eyes. I got a ride home and did my recovery then went and fought to get money back I was charged to put me under. They took a whole $150 off the $600 that my insurance didn't cover. It took them 120 days to credit me. Needless to say I have found a new dentist.

I got my last one in when I was 16. Fast forward a few years and I had to go see/in-process with an Army dentist who was rumored to take everyones wisdom teeth. I put it off for a couple months, until Top called me into his office and made me go! :ROFLMAO:

Here I sit, 40 years later, and I still have all 4 of them. I just got home from having a different one pulled. :(

Had right side removed in my early 20s. Asked if they planned to knock me out. "Nope. Have make sure you feel it.". I'm getting out of the chair when he laughs and explains he had to break the lower tooth (growing sideways) into several pieces asI would need to confirm I "felt" it. Never have understood why. Wasn't a painful procedure, just the usual discomfort. The pain kicked in several hours later and lasted several days.

Fortunately, the left side were straight forward extractions.

Thanks to a lot of Dr's and dentists over prescribing oxy's for anything including a hangnail, dentists no longer can prescribe pain meds, not even Tylenol 3. Fucked over the rest of us who have legitimate issues. I have a 70 year old neck injury that has had me in level 6-7 pain since I was 5 years old. I have to almost fight the fuckers for 14 pills per month, about half what I should get. Fuck the DEA.While I'm at it, Fuck ATF.

Only had the top ones done as they were the only ones interfering with anything. Was awake, but had a valium the night before, the morning of, then gas the whole time. Made it only that day on liquid diet, ate a whopper meal the next day, fries and all, and a large shake. Stitches bugged me the most, as they dissolved they would dangle down and drive you crazy.

All four removed when I was in my early 20s. Novocaine and Nitrous Oxide. Surgeon and his large breasted mid 20s nurse. When I came to, he asked me why I was smiling so much- it was because I was staring at those boobs as I went under- only about 6 inches from my face!

Had all 4 taken out when I was late teens. Gassed and was out. No problems and was eating regular food the next day.

Just had to use the water pick to get food out of the craters for a while, but otherwise no big deal at all

Got one side taken out in Navy boot camp. Lower was impacted so they had to break it in place and take the pieces out. I was awake, but numbed up as hell. I actually thought the Navy dentist did a pretty good job. That gets you a two day rack pass and pain meds that basically kept me asleep the whole time. Dentist told me to get the other side taken out at my next command, but about four weeks later we were doing some absolutely stupid shit for a few days. I raised my hand and told them I was supposed to get my other teeth done, so they sent me back to dental. Same impacted deal with that side, same drugs and rack pass. I slept through those two days of boot camp ignorance, but I paid for it. It was worth every minute.

Had 3 removed I. The early 1990s. Not knocked out, but numbed up good. Last one either never developed or didn’t need removal. Can’t remember.

Dentist had a movie poster for Marathon Man on the wall.

I loved that Dentist!

He said either people thought it was hilarious.

Or thought he ran marathons.

So… show the Boy Marathons Man tonite!!!

I was 2LT in Army - one of my soldiers almost bled out in chair at Dentist office on Ft Ord. I go to Ft Ord dentist for routine cleaning, etc. Dentist (O5) says you must have those wisdom teeth removed. Thinking of my soldier's recent experience, I politely declined. O5 pretty pissed at 2LT, "you will get those wisdom teeth removed!". I still have my wisdom teeth at 65.

Mine were all done when I was a 12-14. I had the crappiest mouth (full of cavities, etc.), much to the dismay of my father, a well recognized dentist in his area. Too much of a sweet tooth back then. Subconsciously, I think there may have also been a bit of "childhood rebellion" in there, somewhere.

As I recall, the 3rd molars (wisdom teeth) were all extractions... removed with a ton of N2O and Mepivacaine, but that was all... no general anesthesia. I was never "under." I don't think my dad really did that kind of work (i.e. that required "general.." as he'd have to have "recovery" facilities and extra staff on board). After that, then crown after crown after crown. At present, I have more crowns in my mouth than I do natural teeth, but I still have a few. Very few if any sweets as I'm paying for that sweet tooth with type II diabetes, now.

I was processing out of the Army at Ft. Hood for the first time and the dentist told me that my wisdom teeth were in. I said that I did not have any pain. He said that I would at some point. That he would gladly take them out right then and there if I wished. I said sure and he yanked them in 10 minutes. He said that I had "roll-outs" with straight roots. He used some sort of pliers and yanked them out like he was seeing how quickly that he could do them.
My oldest daughter had hers out two years ago. It was a 3 appointment process that required surgery. She had quite a bit of pain related to the surgery and a few weeks after. My how it can be different for each person.

Wisdom Teeth can be a nasty experience.

They can grow forwards and impinge on the roots of the teeth in front of them.

They may need to be fractured with what looks like the dental equivalent of a pickaxe to facilitate extraction. Meaning, the teeth are broken apart while still in your gum, and removed shard by shard, fragment by fragment.

One can end up looking like a chipmunk twice, before the ordeal's done.

I was in boot camp, I heard my name called too the class room thought I was going to get bend and thrusted for something. Instead I got to go to the dentist and they took out two wisdom teeth. Have no idea why, never had any problems but I wasn’t in a place I could say much. I was probably just a guinea pig for some naval dentist. Thought that asshole was going to break my jaw he was prying so hard.

Think I got one day of light duty then it was back to the riggers of Marine corps boot camp. They got the other two when I reported to Camp Pendleton. Tell your son it can always be worse lol.

Have fondled a few hunnerd thousand over the years. Basically its all about getting a nickel out of a dime-sized hole as efficiently and atraumatically as possible. Regular pre-op routine, diet, and brushing resumed by post-op day 2-3 is essential or can subsist on soft foods for days on end while everything gets red, foul, swollen and stiff; dealer's choice.

Pretty routine operation for myself, but coming out of it I called the dentist a pompous prick for enjoying micro brews (not even sure if it was him who said that or if it was the other feller in the bay next to me) and that the assistant had a nice rack i would pay to motorboat… my ma couldnt get me out of the dentist quick enough after some of my remarks.
Never hurt really and had my signature burger and fries the same day at my after school job which immediately backfired when some food got stuck in the holes where I previously had teeth.

My older sister had a pretty funny wisdom tooth experience where she confessed her love to her dentist and tried fighting the dentists wife for his love. 😂

I only had 1 wisdom tooth that fully sprouted out above the gum line line a normal tooth. In my late 30s I chipped it on a Payday bar, so it got pulled with just the usual novocaine. Pretty much a routine tooth removal for that one.

While getting a yearly checkup in my late 40s, the dentist mentioned that one of my remaining 3 wisdom teeth was causing bone loss of the neighboring molar. He highly recommended getting them extracted by his oral surgeon buddy. One of my lowers was sideways and never breached the gum line. The other lower just barely had about half its top surface showing at the gum line, so it was a food trap.

I was knocked out with IV sedation and after about an hour in the chair, they were cut out. No stitches. They were pulled at the 10 and 2 o'clock angles, kind of out the outer sides of my gums instead of straight up. The bleeding finally stopped after 24 hours. It was a bit painful to rinse the holes out after eating for a 2-3 weeks. It took 6 months of cautiously chewing food before the holes healed over. It was necessary, but glad it is over and done.

I got mine out in boot camp in the Navy. Quick and painless. The dentist gave me a chit to get a soft meal at the chow hall.

So I got to the chow hall that night. With my chit in hand. Them motherfuckers are serving NY strip steaks. I added up that chit and stuffed it way down in my pocket. I ate every bit of that strip steak. Cut it real small and chewed it with my front teeth. But I'll be dammed if I was going to miss the first good meal they served in five weeks.

Got mine out in College....no big deal. But my dentist told me about his patient the week before...

Crunchy type, no Novocain, painkillers, all organic, etc....even back in the day. Didn't want any shots or pain killers to get 4 wisdom teeth out. Dentist said, "Ok, but once I start, I have to finish, and if you are squirming around, you have to let me give you some Novocain. Dude said "OK."

Dentist said the procedure went amazingly well. Dude gripped the chair pretty hard, but stayed amazingly still. The extraction, suture, no issues--have a nice day.

However, he came back about an hour later, all four incisions bleeding significantly. Dentist was puzzled, it all looked fine when he left. Turns out the guy rode his bike home. In Ithaca, NY. About two miles. Almost all very much uphill....like San Francisco uphill. Some people....

My grandmom is the type of grandmom you never say you're sick. Her cure would give PTSD to the taliban.

When I had mine removed she looked at my mom after church on the way to lunch, and said "I'm concerned Paul's not getting enough protein. You should mix milk and viena sausage in a blinder."

In my high school a nervous girl was given a prescription sleeping pill by her parents for her to relax the night before her procedure. It interacted with the anesthetic and she died in the oral surgeon's office.

I was working offshore 6 days a week when I got all mine removed at once.

Went back to work the next day, got "seasick" the first time ever and one socket stayed sore and swollen more than the rest.

End of the week went back to get it checked out. Dentist reached in with a a pair of pliers and pulled something out.

Held it up and said "Just a little piece of bone [ you pussy].".

He had splintered part of my jaw pulling that one tooth out and the bone splinter was sticking out of my gum making me swallow my own blood all week.

Extracted many hundreds of teeth a year, lots of 3rd molars in the last 32 years. Think getting a broken fence post out of the ground on a micro scale. Remove enough bone to faciltate removal. The main complications from my end are nerve and sinus proximity, beyond that remove as much bone as needed to get out the roots as atraumatic as possible. Experience is a big thing especially on impacted 3rds that are very mesio or distoangular (tilted) examples. Roots are sometimes very curved requiring more bone removal. Wrapped around the bone is a common cliche we joke about when somebody says it but just not reality.....dentist in my lap or on my chest are not a thing either but never say never I suppose. Root tips left behind aren't either unless very inexperienced or done on purpose due to proximity of the lower nerve when a coronectomy is preferred to a permantly numb lip. Many times people cause their own issues by being bone headed and not following post op instructions. One thing is constant, 3rd molar stories are like fish stories they grow and grow and grow😀

I have a friend that pulled one of his own molars that was abscessed. He got novacaine from somewhere and self administered, then grabbed it with a plyers and twisted and pulled.

He also had his brother in law stitch a big gash on his leg. So clearly he isn’t right in the head. 😆

Precisely why my father never did general anesthesia. He did not want to risk that. He would have to interview the patient in advance to determine if they did take any meds prior to the anesthesia, and also have recovery (step down) facilities for after the procedures, etc. etc. If a patient needed that he'd refer them to an oral surgeon/specialist. My dad was a general practitioner.

Fuck, I've stiched up cuts, my buddy sewed his nose back on after a guy bit the end of it off in a fight. When logging we would just put a bunch of pint sap on it to seal and sterilize it then use duct tape to hold it shut...if the cut wasn't too bad.

Pulling a tooth is a bit more dangerous, the root coutd give a lot of trouble.

Florida had a very serious problem with that, until recently (15+ years ago). Doctors and dentists would just hand out narcs like candy. Definitely Sched III narcs like Hydrocodone Bitartrate, Tylenol with Codiene, etc. Not anymore. They only give you what you need with no refills. You'd have to go back to them for more and then that would raise several questions.

My own PCP in PRNJ had to write a script (couldn't call it in ) for Schedule II narcs (Morphine derivatives, etc. or other Opioids). He had to write it and was not allowed to authorize refills. A whole new script had to be written. I only got one Sched II script from him. An extended release suspension system as a cough suppressant called Tusionex Penkenetic. One teaspon over 12 hours. And that's all I ever took. 1 teaspoon. It kicked my a$$. I never took another. He then tried another called "Hisstussin," A Sched III. Much better. still having Hydrocodone Bitartrate, but a lot milder. That is, until the PRNJ forbade its use due to its addictive potential.

My father did often prescribe Schedule IIIs for pain management and perhaps, gave them 1-2 from his stores until the prescription could be filled. But no more than that. And the narcs had to be locked up in a safe in his office and were heavily accounted for. As a paramedic in training we were not allowed to check out narcs (we did use a lot of Morphine) or draw it from the locked safe in the truck. Once certified as a Paramedic, you were then given the combination to the locked box. In the box, there was a note at the bottom with a 3 word summary, "DON'T F*** UP!" If you had any residual Morphine remaining, you had to destroy it in the presence of another medic (I.e. push it out of the syringe onto the ground).

The DEA don't play..... not anymore.

That's what I was saying earlier, the greedy Dr's fucked it up for those of us who have a legitimate need.

I would never suggest anyone abuse drugs, but IMHO if a person is in pain he should have the right 'Not to hurt'. That's part of "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." As long as you do your work, take care of your life, its nobody's business what you put in yourself. BAN BACON ITS HIGH IN SALT>"

Fuck the DEA.

It's not from dentists over prescribing, it's from the open borders and the illegal Chyna fentanyl OD problems - CDC/Biden's answer to "do something" about 100k fentanyl deaths was to make legal pain medicine prescribing ridiculous!
Even my dog, who had a 22lb tumor removed, was only given post-op a sedative/anti-seizure medicine gabapentin, and with over the counter homeopathic "Traumeel" (arnica); her old vet of 9 yrs no longer practicing was shocked - "Not even buprenorphine?'" he asked (it's a moderate opioid).
