Have had fire ants in NC for many years (unfortunately). A few times during PT in a field by the barracks, one of us would jump down into them. I left there in 2018, and this would have been years before that.
Where I'm at now, the fire ants are about a feather away from being the state bird.
I hate those things. Never miss a chance while I'm outside to turn fire ants into piss ants...
We had them in Smithfield but they aren’t here in the hills.
We have Black Carpenter Ants and a little black ant called (surprisingly) Tiny Black Ants and they both will bite and leave a welt on you from formic acid.
Not as bad as the Fire Ants but not pleasant either.
My part of Eastern North Carolina was blessed with fire ants after Hurricane Floyd and the following water level problems. Noticed a random mound or two the following couple years. Had a State of NC fellow out here twice for treating those. During his last visit here, he stated that they wouldn't be able to come out anymore due to the lack of resources and increasing coverage of the invasion. It's been on, since then with a high count of 53 mounds on one acre.

Guy I overheard today was saying passive aggressive stuff about the Trumpster. He said DJT was mandating putting his fave on Mount Rushmore, said he wanted the government to stay shut down because he wouldn’t have people looking at what he was doing, he was going to round up people and put them in concentration camps…..
