The carrying cases like the Possum Hollows are nice when you're taking cleaning rods to the range/match.
I have one of the Sinclair wall mount units that holds six cleaning rods. I have six (combo of Deweys and Tiptons) -- the Sinclair mount is very convenient next to my cleaning bench.

This may be overboard, but I like to fabricate stuff. The handle requires 1 1/4" ID pipe minimal. Since I had 3/4" pipe on hand, this was used for the rod, plus it reduced overall weight and volume. Then, utilized a series of reducers and couplers for the handle. Below is a list of parts used.

For the rod: 3/4" SCH 40 pipe (cut long for the foam) and capped. Before adding cap, stuffed end with foam pipe insulation to reduce rattle and protect the rod end.

For the handle: Added a reducer (1 1/2" to 3/4"), a coupler (1 1/2" to 1 1/2"), a pipe to threaded reducer (1 1/2" to 1 1/4" thread), then a 1 1/4" threaded cap for rod removal.

If I recall, all this cost < $5.

This works well for transporting them around if you aren't transporting in a hard case (or don't have room in the case). I just use pipe of a large enough diameter to accomodate the handle, then on the opposite end cap, I epoxy in a retainer for the rod end that holds it in the center of the tube. That keeps the rod end from knocking around and keeps the threads safe from any damage.

When mine are at home, I have a cleaning rod rack that I built that is mounted to one end of my workbench where they hang from the handles.

I have found the rod cases you can get from Sinclair, Midway, ect. work very well and dont take up any more space than the rod.

I hang them vertically on loop hangers that i bend to fit under the handle. just screw the rod into a wall and its easy access and out of the way. Plus there is no tension on the rod as they hang vertially so they never bend.

I used to use both the packing tubes and pvc. Both worked ok, but were too bulky and would not fit in my gun case. I tried the possum hollow case too and it works, but is a friction fit for my Dewey Rods.

Gave the rod cases which are made in house by Sinclair. Buy the one with the Delrin set screw. They have one for the Dewey rods as well as one for the Pro Shot rods. The beauty is they can be cut to length with a tubing cutter and customized for each rod you own. Compact, keeps the rods secure and clean. Highly recommended.

I cut out a slot in the Pelican where I keep the gun, and it just goes with it.

i store them in my reloading/cleaning bench. have a line of holes drilled across the back of the desk that they stand in

This is what I do, only I don't consider it temporary. I have 2 44" rods, one for my 22 cal rifles and one for my 30 cal rifles. I store them both in the cardboard tubes with caps, and have labeled the tubes accordingly, so pick up the correct tube when cleaning.

At home...I have a screwdriver holder that I use for the rods works well, just make sure you have space over head to take it out.

I as well have a screw driver hanger on the side of my bench where i just feed them all thru and let them hang!

At the house, I use an RF patch cord rack I had gathering dust. Similar to a screwdriver rack, but doesn't require vertical clearance as it is slotted. ~ $10 (or $20 with magnets) - darned expensive magnets!

PVC and some conduit clamps to hold it to the ceiling.

Easily protected/kept clean, and up out of the way when not in use.....
