Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I searched his website and Facebook (somewhat briefly) and couldn't find any info on the extension keys/wrenches. I messaged him since it is Sunday but do you have any links or further information?

It was in the comments section on Facebook. Here's a screenshot of the comments. No real info, just that he made some wrenches at his shop and he ordered more material to begin producing them. Here's the screenshot I took:

Great, thanks for the feedback. It's been a few years since I've shot any tactical matches but I'm itching to get back in it and there are some monthly matches close enough.

Lately Ive been working on some positional shooting off man made and natural structures. In the past I shot matches with my Tubb2000, which is an awesome rifle. Now I've been practicing with it and the desert tech since I have it and the DT is very easy to hold kneeling etc. so I'm kinda intrigued about running it some for fun.

There are lots of them out there now, working great. I've been using them for quite a while with no complaints.

what's a good goto load for the 22" 308 conversion? I want to get hits out to 1050 yards. I was thinking juggernauts, but i read in a few forum posts that folks didn't have good luck with them on the 22" DT 308. I tried some TMKs but didn't have good results with them while being at or below mag length, they were fine single feeding them however.

Now that the 10 round mags have been out a while would people say they've got these things figured out? Tuned up, polished up, broken in? Anyone run have a few matches with them now?

I've shot a few club matches with them, they work well. I have 2 of them and haven't had an issue with either of them, other than getting some funny looks or questions on why it's so long.

Im currently running 42 gr of H4895 under at 178 AMAX at 2.825". This is in the middle of a huge 4gr node (40-44). I get about 2650 from it, and it has been very reliable to 1000 yards. They are WS2 coated FWIW. Once I'm out of the AMAX (soon), I'll start on the 178 ELDX. I would think the Juggernauts would be good too. I have some 200 Hybrids left over that I might try if I get a wild hair.

how far are you off the lands at 2.825?

I'm not sure I ever even measured because I initially just loaded some rounds that would fit the magazine to go break in the barrel and check for pressure. When I had 10 shots roughly within 1 MOA across a 4 grain spread, I judged the target based on what I know about OCW. I then picked the middle charge that also happened to be tightest to a few surrounding charges and started loading and shooting. Easiest load development I've ever done.

Awesome covert setup! Please refrain from posting anymore pics of your covert as it's seriously going to push me over the edge and buy one! I love my SRS A1, I just want a smaller one too.

Out of curiosity, what's the weight on that snub nose rifle??

Configured exactly as pictured it is 12.6lbs...but it doesn't feel that heavy because of its awesome balance! BTW in the pic its balanced on the pistol grip in case anyone missed that.

Was thinking of changing from SRS A1 to covert. After hand guard change, will I lose anything other than velocity from going to shorter barrels? All of my current barrels are 26", 6xc,6.5 Creed, .308, .300Wm and I would like to go to 16" on .308 and 18" on 300Wm. Also what would be a recommended "short length" for 6xc and 6.5 Creed?

Note you don't have to run a short barrel with the covert hand guard. Sure you don't gain any advantage size wise when running the longer barrels, but it still functions perfectly fine. Then you have the option to run a nice shorty barrel whenever you want some close range game where velocity isn't as critical.

Covert is fine for anything except hanging on a clip on NV. I run a 26" 6.5 but also run a 16" .308 and my son runs a 16.5" 6.5 Creedmoor. Either shorties are all day long guns on steel at 500 yds. If primarily hunting inside 300yds and casually banging steel I never take longer than a 16". With a can and 16" barrel the covert is a handy capable rifle.

Looks like a SAC conversion, at least the magazine. If so how you liking it?

I like it a lot! It has functioned flawlessly so far but I've not shot it much. I was supposed to be hunting everyday by now but I'm stuck at moon base alpha for another year. (sometimes I think the only way I'm getting out of here is in a bag :() This means I only have access to 55gr ammo and no reloading gear. I'm not shooting 55's through this but every now and then a buddy will fly up a couple boxes of Hornady 75gr BTHP for me to keep me sane. 300WM ammo selection here is not much better, 180's in mid tier ammo and you'll pay close on $100 a box...ouch!

If you're looking at a SAC 223 conversion you'll be a happy customer! I should also mention that Greg (Orkan) at Primal Rights offers a 22-250 conversion so you might want to have a conversation with him too. My Mom disagrees with me but I'm no one special yet Greg has always treated me good even when there was no money in it for him. Not many vendors will do that so if you need a little extra hand holding or just want good service Greg should be on your list.

Guys who own the 223 conversion, what barrel length and twist rate did you go with? I'll be shooting anything from a 70 grain RDF to a 80 grain AMAX or SMK. 1 in 7 and 26"?

I went with the sac223rem conversion. It's 22.5'' barrel and 7.7 twist . It's a fun one .

Just ordered my .308 kit and now the wait begins. Where can I get extra .308 mags? Does anyone make one other than DTA that works?

No other SA mags that I know of. Just DT brand. The mags do work really well with a little polishing of the feed lips. I like to tweak out the front of the feed lips a hair. Helps it feed a lot smoother

Do you have a drawing of the area that you polish or is this a service you provide? I found two mags for 150.00 but they are used.

Will this need to be done on the 308 mags? Do you have mags for sale? Also I ma looking at the 6.5 creed can I just change the barrel or will I need to get a bolt? If I use the same bolt will it need to be sent in so that the head spacing can be set?

The mags as is will work. Polishing will help keep the brass for getting scratched up as much. We are a DT dealer so we have mags, ect. You can use the 308 bilt for Creedmooor, we do not need your bolt to make a barrel. Shoot over an email and we can give you a quote. [email protected]

Can you make short action cartidges work in long action magazines? I have a .308 load with TMKs... and well i have more TMKs left than i thought, almost 1k remaining... And to get good results out of them they have to be quite a bit longer than mag length. I forget off the top of my head, but i think around 2.97" and mag lenght is 2.90".

I tried to put some rounds in a long action magazine that i have ,but it seems the feed lips are spread a little too far apart and the follower will tilt something nasty. Any solutions here? I could try and bend the feed lips in a bit, but then i'm worry about trashing a long action magazine and i still have the follower tilt issue. Shoul I just keep single feeding them until i use 'em all up?

Just purchased a 300 win mag conversion to compliment my 6.5 creedmoor.

Anyone have input on the Hornady 225 vs 208 ELD Match in the DTA 26" barrel?

Has anyone tried the flatline in 308 yet?

This is something I am working on myself ;-) I think it would be a great option for the Extended Long Range PRS match in Casper, as I hear the performance of the .308 flatline in the 198gr is similar to the .338 Lapua... Josh at PVA can make barrels for them, but you would need to run the long action magazine. If it works for me, I plan to carry these barrels in stock, since you can shoot the 175gr bullets out of the same barrel and just swap the magazines and bolt stop to run the 198 grainers. The only issue is the twist rate needs to be correct for the 198 bullets.

Got my 308 kit today and will have it on the range Friday. I will give a report. Hope it does what I think it will do.

Was für eine grosse Scheissestück! What the hell were they thinking? Sorry about the German, you can't cuss in english on the board.

A friend brought his DT SRS A1 in today to have me look at the scope mount. We set it up on the bipod but it kept falling over. After looking at a few things we discovered the rail the bipod was attached to was cracked in one spot and broken in another. There were 2 screws pulled out as well. Looking closer we found the damn rail is plastic and not even decent quality plastic. The screws are tiny metric pieces of crap as well. I've been a big DT fan since the beginning but have been hearing a lot of grumbling lately. I see some of it is well founded. I like the idea of not having extra weight in rails where you don't need it but the bipod has to take some loads that a scope or accessory doesn't. Why the hell didn't they make something proper. I made up a new rail for him and we put a plate inside with threaded holes since the handguard holes were trashed. We went with a screw size that might actually take a load as well, 10-32. What a sad thing when you have to fix a main part on a gun in this price range.

Frank

What's the range of bullets that have worked in that 7.7 barrel? I'm waiting on the lefty conversions to start to roll.

I've mostly been using 80gr 77gr and 75gr . I haven't tried 55gr yet but I hear guys have had good results with all of them. I have had a lot of fun with that conversion on my 650yd target. It gets some use.

For those of you trying to use the RRS Desert Tech adapter on a covert chassis, you have to modify your pic rail if you still want to use a bipod. I am using the aluminum pic rail from Primal Rights. The holes are on 2" centers from the start. You just have to drill and countersink another hole on 1" spacing, then cut the rail section to length. Hope this helps!

Todd

perfect ! What twist are you running, and which flatline .308 weight?

I am running the stock barrel 22 " 1 in 11 twist. I got it on a good deal. Will be putting on a Thunder Beast muzzle brake and ultra 9 suppressor.

What a great rifle. Went to the range today and with in the first 50 rounds I had several sub 1/2 and a few sub 1/4 groups. I did not get to mount the Ultra 9 but that will happen soon. I was using a SWFA 16x scope. Not the best but it did get the job done. I am using 168 at the time but plane on trying 178 soon.

I have a request. Is anyone able to hook me up with a Desert Tech Gen 2 Barrel Extension? Issue is; I live in Australia. No one here can hook me up. I'm also after a spare bolt with a Lapua Mag face. Lemme know.

Sup fellas. Just an FYI, I have 4 1-9 twist 30 cal Hawk Hill blanks in stock. Perfect for 300 WM or 300 Norma. I have an unclaimed 6.5 8 twist Benchmark and a shipment of unknown Barliens arriving any day.

Thanks,
Ty

Hey all, I've been lurking on this sub for a long time and finally just received my first DT SRS A1 in 6.5 Creedmoor from the guys at Short Action Customs, they were very helpful and great to deal with, couldn't be happier with them.

I have a question I was hoping you guys can help me out with. I'm looking for a drag bag style case for it, does anyone have any suggestions? Or is there another style case out there that I should consider?

I'll be sure and start posting my first couple of range reports here in the next few weeks. I look forward to learning from such a great community. Thanks in advance!

Broke down and finally got rid of the old SRS to buy a new Lefty. After a short wait from SAC i got my old barrels back with new left handed extensions and the muzzles rethreaded for the suppressor that I am patiently waiting for. I have the 22" .308 and the 26". hopefully i'll be adding a magnum barrel in there soon. 7saum maybe

I have the Desert Tech brand drag bag and it's a great case. Plus it's made for the DT SRS.

Thanks for the input. Does it carry pretty well with the backpack straps?

I don't use the case for anything other than transport in truck bed. In field its strapped to my Mystery Ranch 3 day assault, or on a sling. Never thought of a reason to use the case as backpack.
