Anyone have any velocity numbers for a bolt action 16" 223 AI with 75gr or 80gr bullets?
I'm building a short, lightweight, truck gun.
Thanks

I have a 16" .223 with a 1:9 twist barrel. I have am shooting 73 ELD-M at 2,900 FPS with IMR 8208 XBR. I have a friend shooting 80 ELD's out of an 18" 1:8 twist .223 using the same powder and getting right around 2,800 FPS. These are both straight .223's.

I have a .223 AI build coming in to the FFL on Tuesday from Patriot Valley Arms with a 20 inch barrel. I plan to work up a load for the 80 ELD-M with IMR 8208 XBR. I am hoping to get in the 3,000 FPS ball park with that barrel.

I think you should reasonably be able to get 2,850 FPS out a 16 inch .223 AI with the 75's or 80's.

Im having a 223ai with 16" barrel built by TS Customs. It also seem to me that it would be a great truck rifle.Try to go 7 or 8 twist on the barrel so there will be no problems with the heavy slugs.223ai has become my favorite caliber.

Those aren't bad numbers. I'd be extraordinarily happy with anything over 2900fps with a 75gr eld-m, still supersonic out to 1050 yards at my altitude.

I get 2975fps from a 22" 223AI with 80gr Amax and 24.9gr XBR...I'd think a 16" version should get 2800+.

I've been thinking of a 16" bolt gun in 223 / 5.56 / 223ai also for another reason. I live in the Socialist Republic of New York. When I retire from law enforcement, technically I have to get rid of my AR. I thought about building a short barrel, magazine fed, bolt gun with maybe 1-8X24 scope or red dot, to sort of fill that space the AR would have filled. I have been looking at the Ruger Scout Rifle in 223 / 5.56. Something handy. Or I might build something. I do like the heavier 70gr to 80gr bullets.

Or, you could move out of NY, keep your AR, and enjoy retirement in a more freedom loving state?

Yes moving to a more freedom state is a option. With 95% of my close family living here and my real boss in life (granddaughter) living here that might not happen soon. That's why I wanted to build a tactile bolt action, short barrel rifle.

Bumping to see if anyone has velocity updates on a 16" or 18" ackley shooting 75s.

2850 out of a 16" with an ultra 7 would be amazing.

Bumping!!!, am planning on building a 16” 223 ai, wondering what kind of accuracy/ speeds I’d be getting out of 55g pills.

2950fps with 80gr eld with 8208 from a 22" it's conservative and good on brass life.

Just an update, am getting
1/4” groups at 100yds
3450 fps with 50g vmax
Out of a 16” pipe
