The 1911 I own is the Springfield Armory GI edition (purchased around 2010). Its seriously old-school. Plain-jane everything, parkerized finish and wood grips. I bought it because it reminds me of watching old John Wayne war moves with my dad when I was a kid. I still shoot it every now and then but its much more of a "heritage" piece to me. I'll stick to my Glock's for defensive purposes.

Comparing Glocks to 1911's is like comparing apples to oranges. I've owned 1911's for years. I'm in to multigun heavy irons class and I shoot boatloads of .45 ACP in 1911's. But, my carry gun is a Glock 23 in 40 SW simply because it's the perfect carry gun for me. It's the perfect size. It feels great in my hand and points well. It's plenty accurate. I've fired it enough the trigger is really smooth. It's much lighter than a 1911 and even after much neglect it still flawlessly shoots all 13 rounds in the magazine every time. It just is what it is. If Colt made a Glock, I would buy it in a minute. But, they didn't.

Here's a recent pic from a local forum. Not a real close up, unfortunately.
25 year old Gen2 (frame replaced previously), no recollection of round count.
Apparently, the dealer remembered a couple of similar cases since 1988.
Another forum member says his Gen2 slide did the same thing after 40k rounds.
Pretty interesting. I've seen (and owned) some high round-count Glocks (all Gen 2 - mid to late 90s time frame) without that kind of problem but obviously its been an issue for some. I'm a bit curious if its a Gen 2 issue or something more prevalent.
There was a mention (guess) about Glocks from some certain time period. Also a mention of them breaking somewhere in the front end - but also a second comment that said it broke just like the one in the photo, and it was first noticed when hits started drifting to the left.
One comment said that the locking block of the barrel on old 9mm Glocks was hitting the slide hard in that area. Gen3 had something changed, which rectified it.

I hate that I shoot Glocks so well because I am not a fanboy but they simply work. They can be found anywhere, the aftermarket is insane, each generation complements those before them and the mags are simply affordable. I find them ugly, but so ugly that they are kind of attractive in a weird kind of way. I have tried many other makes over the years, I was a big HK fan boy for a while and more recently I thought the FN509 would be the answer, but at the end of the day they had more cons than the Glocks and that just doesn't add up for me personally. It's Glock for this guy, all the way.

Every single platform and generation of said platforms out there has their share of issues. Most are fantastic in their own right, so pick your poison and enjoy.
They work...no better than many other guns on the market. I don't care for OVER THE TOP fan-boy marketing statements. It's a good gun for many people. The numbers show that the CZ75 is the MOST combat tested, proven firearm around the world. I would guess 1911 have been the longest running production 'battle proven' handgun. If you like glocks and want your friends to buy glocks because you have glocks...whatever.
Get the gun that fits the shooters hand and suits their needs. Military has not been a fan of plastic guns and plastic magazines.

Except when they are. And the Glock does not have a "plastic magazine." The Glock OEM magazine is the most rugged magazine on the market. Metal encased in polymer.

while i have nothing against glocks , do not all guns work? I have never purchases on knowing it would not work or be dependable its something they all should do and do well . not really a selling point if ever gun made is supposed to do that same thing every time you pull the trigger you are supposed to hear a click or bang if they are loaded . If the did not I surely would want a refund . Now how well they function or feel to everyone is up to the buyer , I like em but i like almost every gun I have ever fired with some exception .

The only organized group that are fans of the Glock are these guys. Anyone that supports 2A is good in my book...
Lots of Glock bashing in here. I'd love to know what you all think is so much better, especially when an overwhelming majority of the market are plastic handguns modeled after or similar to the Glock. I don't think that Glocks are the best thing ever, like most they have their fair share of issues, but I'm also aware of the fact that a lot of other makes continue to try and beat Glock at their own game and fall short. Like them or not, they will continue to be the number one plastic fantastic pocket rocket.

*FULL DISCLOSURE* I am not sponsored by any other gun manufacturer to bitch slap Glock talk...I do own 2 Glocks (19G3 and 43) and a Mok-Glock. I do like them...but I do not carry them appendix either.

I prefer the P220 series Sigs over anything else. Never had any type of failure with one, I prefer carrying with a decocker only, and while the triggers aren't 1911 triggers they are worlds better than any Glock trigger-aftermarket or otherwise.
FWIW I have had malfunctions with a Glock; BTF/weak ejection that caused an empty casing to do a backflip back into the ejection port and keep the slide from going into battery.
Oddly enough, I've had that happen in every pistol I own except the Glock. I think that depends too much upon ammo and not the gun.
