I'm thinking about getting a Mossberg MVP Patrol in 308 and having it rebarrelled to 358 Winchester for something different. Will use on hogs, deer etc. with a thermal on top. Any thoughts I should consider? I can get in this for about $750 total. $500 for rifle and $250 to rebarrel.

maybe consider a 338 federal (308 neck up to 338 cal). More choices for factory ammo, ~200 fps faster muzzle velocity w/ same grain bullet, ammo is cheaper too. Also long range ballistics aren't bad with the 200gr bullets out to 800yds

I just built an LR-308/AR-10 in 358 Win for a friend of mine. Thing is Thor's Hammer. Hits hard and is a pleasure to shoot. Recoil isn't bad and accuracy is pretty solid with a 18" barrel. I think you'd like 358. I think it is an underserved and underappreciated round. My buddy hasn't killed anything with it yet, but I can't wait to hear how the terminal affects are on a hog. Sierra Gameking 225 gn BT is his bullet of choice. No load worked up just yet.

Any thoughts on using the Patrol as a host? Its light, compact and uses AR-10 higher capacity mags. AR-10's' are just too heavy once topped with a thermal to tote around. Usually only get one shot anyway before the hogs scatter and the bolt is pretty quick.

i've about 100 rounds thru two mossberg patriots. they both worked fine for what they are, which is a budget gun. When handling them they don't feel super durable, the bolt isn't very smooth, the trigger is ok, and accuracy was ok, really nothing special all around. In my research, accuracy is hit or miss, and the ones i shot were acceptable bolt gun accuracy of 1.5" at 100yds. For the price, the Ruger American is a better gun, and even the Savage Axis has wide appeal and seems to work.

I like the idea of using AR-10 high capacity mags and the Patrol seems like the only one that fits that bill
That's a good point on using the AR-10 mags.
If you think a 10 round mag is enough, i'd recommend buying a Ruger american predator w/ the AICS mag for under 500 and rebarrel it. Just another option.

OP, how are you figuring $250 to rebarrel? Is that for the gunsmithing only or cost of a new barrel + gunsmithing?

Make sure the 35 cal neck and bullets don't hit the guide ribs on the inside of the AR magazines and cause rounds to bind.
