Almost got bit

The last copperhead I saw was when I was fishing off a low water bridge near my house. There was a crevice and LOTS of crawdad parts around it (should have been a give away) but I plopped my fat ass down and commence to catching smallies. Look over 10 minutes later and the little bastard had come out and was just hanging out watching me fish. I said "Well hello." and he hit the water at mach 2. Pretty timid but I'm a bit more mindful these days. The water moccasins? I carry a gun because of those bastards. Best case, you shit yourself when you spook one and they make a commotion leaving and worst case... Well, I won't be walking out if that happens...

Ya, the Prime Box snake is not poisonous, it's a bull snake I am pretty sure

I was actually shooting when it crawled onto my mat I looked up and it was on my databook
fuck that shit with a bag of dicks! I would have shit my pants!

The few years I lived in Texas it was my job to do the yard every weekend. Being young and stupid, any snake I encountered out there (usually in what looks like the same type of spot OP did) in that gap between the side of the house where it comes back a few inches making sort of a 3 sided tunnel, I'd just chase them off with the long ass weed eater. Worse case, I'd turn the weed eater on and this would obviously make the snake go away, right?

At 10, this seemed to be the perfectly safe and sane thing to do. The time I told my dad about it he didn't even say anything, so that only reinforced how ingenius I was. No idea what type of snakes it was, but this was in central Texas, so who knows.

Mind you, this was around the time that my brother and I would shoot random objects at each other with slingshots, climb up on the roof of the house, go play war on the weekends with all the neighborhood kids in literally a swamp as well as in the sewers, skateboarded down streets that were on a hill to see how fast we could go, played Dungeons & Dragons and the only rules were to let the parents know where we were and come home by dark.

As with a lot of things, knowing what I know now, I still can't figure out how I'm not dead.

If you ever try to cut a snake with a trimmer, better pay attention to which way the trimmer head turns. It's possible to fling the snake to your feet.

I have had a black snake living in my detached garage for years. It took the woman a little while to get comfortable with the idea but now he's welcome to stay.
We have copper heads and corn snakes around here. They are very similar and many people mistake them very often.

...

Here’s a picture of one killed in S Texas several years ago on the backside of Brisco Ranch near Mines Road... For sure a Diamondback...

Wow that's a beast. Lots of meat there. Rattler is one of my favoite meats. Very tasty cooked almost anyway you want. Pan fried is so tasty tho...

I’ve had a copperhead spotted in my backyard and I’ve been searching for him before someone gets bitten. No luck yet but found another non-venomous snake out there the other day and was teaching my boys how to tell the difference.

I don’t mind the non-venomous ones being around but anything else has to go.

Caution everyone!!! I was out hunting mule deer in SE Wyoming in my younger days. As I was headed back to my vehicle I came across a good sized Prairie Rattler, shot it in the head and decapitated it with my knife. I was carrying the headless body back to the vehicle for about ten minutes and the body was starting to wriggle in my grip so I tightened up. That damn headless snake stiffened up and struck my forearm as if it was still alive. In the moment of mental shock, I dropped it. A few seconds after, I regained my composure and took it home. I'm very thankful I was taught to never leave the head on a venomous snake.

In other reptile news, how many of you fuckers have a ride or die Dragon?

When I was out in Utah I had two run-ins with rattlers. One came up to investigate me when I was leaned up against a tree “on lookout” and the other I stepped on trying to find a spot to piss. Scared the hell out of me both times.

Damn moccasins here are dead on sight. More run ins with them and been chased. Nope.

Is there any truth to the old wives tail about putting moth balls around the house/sheds to get them to stay away?

Same with trying to hit one while riding motorcycle or bicycle, bad idea. Snake may well end up in your lap.

I see youre from south Texas. Biggest rattler I ever saw was out by Amisted Reservoir west of Del Rio. I was driving along one ot the shore roads about dusk and saw a piece of what I thought was fire hose in the road. Stopped to move it and as I got out of the truck it moved.

The thing must have been 7 feet because its head was in the brush on one side of the road and its tail in the brush on the other side and about as big around as my calf. I was so awe struck and glad I didnt kick it it got away. Still gives me the shivers.

But the worst weve got he is nothing compared to a KIng Cobra or Black Mamba.

the one i was talking about seeing, i never actually saw the whole snake. stretched across a whole 6 foot walking path between two brush piles. i never saw the head. about 1.5 hours east of del rio.... i try not to exaggerate because everyone does talking about rattlers, but in the middle he was as big around as my bicep. He was big enough he could has constricted by 55# border collie if he'd have wanted to.

That's wild! I generally let snakes be. I like them and they serve a purpose in keeping vermin at bay. I will kill one if it's a real danger to people or livestock and I can't realistically relocate it. So far that's only happened once. A copper head was determined to reside in a tree overhanging a pond where my horse liked to hang out and drink. Bit him right on the nose once and he nearly died as it swelled up about the size of a basketball and he couldn't breathe. Vet managed to give him something to get the swelling down. A 12ga blast right behind the head of the snake sorted that out.

In college my GF (now wife) used to bring a python with her to class and the library. She'd keep it in a bag in class, then the library/study area had all these private rooms with big windows, and we'd let the snake roam around in there. It loved to snuggle up to a warm laptop. Also was handy for making sure no one tried to poach our room while we are off doing something else :D

Not sure, we’ve killed several here on our location.
I was thinking it was just a Diamondback..

I got this little guy just outside my bedroom door the other day. Compared to the others in this thread it's weak sauce, but I still don't want to step on one.

I remember weed eating along the fence line at the mine shop in NAVMAG Subic.
I disturbed a really good sized reticulated python. Don't know how long it was, as I never saw the head, but it was pretty goddamn long.
This is what the compound looks like now:

‘Bout stepped on a Philippine cobra on the golf course one day at Subic back in the 80s. Was about 5’ long. Was looking for a golf ball in the rough during dry season. Matched right in with the rough.

Even after going through JEST there, I let my caddie go onto the jungle to look for my slices. Always came out with more golf balls than when he went into the jungle to look for mine.

Had a 18” sidewinder right next to my feet during the starting point of night nav of SERE school. Never new it till the instructors told me.

Not a fan of venomous snakes or spiders. Coral snakes & cotton mouths at Eglin AFB swamp. Brown tree snakes at Anderson AFB in Guam. And some venomous snake under a pallet in Rockhampton, Australia cause they’re all venomous in Australia!

Wife says kill them all.

We don’t need snakes in Michigan, we have this to fuck up everything instead

But if one crawls on my shooting mat while I’m shooting.....yeah you can just keep it I was looking to upgrade anyways

This guy was waiting for us under my brothers front tire at the farm in ETX. One shot with the 9mm (after he moved the truck) was all it took. Pretty sure it’s a water moccasin.

Don’t live here for damn sure, definitely a shit hole, Yea the traffic at 128 and 18 sure sucks. It’s like a ghost town now that the rig count has fallen by about 300 rigs here in Delaware and Permian basins.
I’m still working, used to be able to see about 10 derricks from our location, now I see just 1...

Yep
Nasty stinky.

In Texas you learn to put a clip through your plastic minnow bucket trap door.

They go in untended buckets and get trapped and next morning you stick your hand in there.

Just a little advise, throw the bucket out of the boat before shooting it.

Copperhead?

I've got minnow traps set out along each outside wall to catch them.

Have to check them daily to release any kingsnakes or toads that get caught.

So far I catch about 10 kings for every copperhead.

I'll take those stats.
What technique do you use to remove the good/bad reptiles from a minnow trap?
