Actually, it was Eli Whitney whose 'engine' or 'gin' made cotton pay. Before the Cotton Gin, it took a slave 2 hours to produce a pound of cotton lint. Cotton was dying in the South because it was uneconomical to process. With the arrival of the Cotton Gin, a single person could process tons of cotton in a day. And suddenly the mills of Mass and NH and the United Kingdom had a cheap, renewable, durable fiber in unlimited quantities. Eli Whitney made Black Lives Matter... because until the early 1960's (the first picker was invented in the '20s, but was very inefficient and took a long time to mature.) So there was no machine that could pick cotton. It was almost all manual until about 1962. And automated pickers did not get widely adopted until the late '60s.

I saw my first tractor powered cotton picker in 1955 while picking cotton by hand. A local farmer had bought a one row picker (red color) and came by to show it off. He picked two rows that were about ¼ mile long in ten minutes. This normally took a hand picker a half day. For a 500 pound bail of cotton, you needed 1200 to 1300 pounds of seed cotton. It took six people a day to pick a bail of seed cotton. That first powered picker would pick ten bails in a day with two people, one picking and one hauling. A mechanical picker would pay for itself most of the time in the first year.

The 'Thought Police' don't think things through at all. Their FEELINGS rule their decisions. All they saw in Gone With the Wind was a time of slavery. I read a few minutes ago that Aunt Jemima was the first female black millionaire.
