I'm thinking about rebarreling my lightweight 6.5 saum woods rifle with a 16" to run with a suppressor once it's out of jail.
I take occasional hunting shots to 700 yards with it but mostly it's deer and elk within 200.
Often times the shots are quick and I don't get a chance for ear protection..

Currently I'm getting 3200 with a142 ablr in a 25" barrel, assuming I loose 300 that'd still leave me around 2900.
Anyone run a magnum 6.5 sub 20"?

I've run a number of rifles suppressed that short. While not a bad as unsuppressed, that 16" barrel is gonna leave you with definite ringing. With a 16" 308 bolt gun shooting 130gr barnes, it still has quite a bit of bite to it, but not anywhere near as bad as without. I'll bet your speed prediction isn't too far off, and would leave you with a decent hunting rifle that's pretty short. Maybe think about 18" or so and a bullet with less bearing surface to maybe keep the speed up, if you're worried about it.

Not exactly what you're looking for but close. I just got mine yesterday (6.5 PRC, 18" Bartlein) and haven't had a chance to shoot/chrono. Have some Hornady 143gr ELDX on hand and will report back once I have some numbers.

Yeah please do! I’m definitely interested in what kind of velocity you get and how it shoots!

My 6.5 SAUM is back at GAP getting its barrel chopped to 20”. Original length was 24”. When it gets back I’ll let you know how much velocity I lost.

I ended up ordering a 7.5 twist 16" 6.5 PRC instead, I should have it in about 4-6 weeks.
I'll let you all know how it goes

Your only expecting a 300fps loss from 9 inches of barrel?
The consensus seems to be 25-30 fps per inch of barrel from every test I've read about.
300 fps loss would be 33 fps/inch.
Guess there's only one way to know for sure, like I said I'll post my results

As mentioned above, had some 143 eldx, but ended up shooting only the 147 eld match factory rounds before running out of daylight. Sorry, but forgot about this thread! 18" Bartlein, 1:8.

Chrono was on the fritz and couldn't get any readings I was confident in. Based on come up, my ballistics app has me at 2830 fps. I had a 100 yard zero, needed 1.7 mils, shooting at 1267' elevation in 90 degree weather. This barrel is effectively new, and I will be ecstatic if the 2830 is real with factory ammo.

Interesting. This is another example of why I love the 25 Creedmoor. My barrel is only a few inches longer than yours, but in theory, if I cut it to 18" my velocity would be around 2870, faster than the 147, and same if not better BC performance. If it was a SAUM?o_O

I plan on building an 18" 25sst for this very reason. Should keep the 131's at or above 3000 fps.

That would be a lot of fun in a shorter barrel, and just might be the compromise I'm looking for. Thanks for the heads up!

I run a 6.5 SST in a 20” proof. Did load development this past weekend was able to get the Berger 140 elite hunters up to 3012 before I had to stop because of pressure. Good node at around 2935.
