Just read an account from a PFC Marine on Okinawa....
From his twin 20 MM Oilerkon AA pit he watched a flight of USAAC Aircobras suddenly land in the midst of an air attack, the pilots unassed the AC and headed for bomb pits.
It struck him as odd behavior in the face of the enemy.
Speaking to the pilots later he learned they had been issued "export" models with a limited ceiling and they couldnt get to an altitude above the Japanese.....they realized they were dead meat if they stayed airborne.
