Eddie Van Halen Died... cancer

Damn.... I hate that. I love Van Halen.
I went to high school with Valerie Bertinelli's brother. Valerie and Eddie would occasionally show up at one of our football games.

He's one of the few guitarists from the past 45 years that are immediately identifiable to the casual listener in the first few notes, regardless of the song. He's also been an influencer on many of my favorite artists. RIP 🤘

Van Halen got me a girl and some stink finger . I played guitar in high school and a drummer I was jammin with brought 2 girls with him one night . One of the songs we covered was Aint Talkin Bout Love. She was impressed and I hooked up . Luckily for me she went on to be another buddie's ex wife . RIP Eddy .

Eddy Vanhalen did set a new standard to guitar skill style . he was just HUGE for the longest time.

Cant remember the date 1st seen VH ???, but they were not huge yet and just touring as back-up for Black Sabbath. Ozzy always fucking great to see again,No Doubt, and are great on stage and a living classic ...
BUT when VH came up and on, it's was fucking high energy. They were just ripping it up, high energy, non-stop whole time they were on stage from start to finish. 1st time Will Never forget, It still sticks in my head today because, when VH rolls out after Ozzy , I was .." like WTF " ? .. Lee Roth jumped out, and he was wearing a all 'Florescent Orange' Jump Suit, you damn near had to put on Sunglasses just to look at him jumping around on stage.

Respect the Wind... one of my favorites from him. Dude was amazing!

If I hear thunder tonight, its because EVH and Dimebag are jammin.

RIP!

no Problem. He was a control freak. That is why they had so many different front men and singers. Yes he could play a 6 string but had nothing else to offer

You have to look at VH as a group. He was not a team player. It was his wat or you are gone. Hell his wife could not even put up with his shit.

R.I.P. Eddie! You brought a lot good times and memories, into my early adult years, with the fantastic guitar work, you did. 🍺 to ya! Mac

Starting at the beginning, and hitting repeat until the neighbors start screaming...

There wasn't a road trip we didn't blast VH from my 70 Chevelle Ragtop.

First six albums complete:

"I don't always listen to Van Halen, but when I do, so do my neighbors."

Wasn't David Lee Roth, the F tard of the group? VH was never the same, after he left. Just couldn't get that enthused with Sammy Haggar. Mac

DLR is one of the best rock frontmen of all time. Sammy Hagar is a better singer, but he just doesn't have the same intangibles.

And yeah, Roth is a massive "F tard". That's kinda an essential part of his charm.

This.

5150 was a good album though IMO.

When do they say he died of COVID?

RIP Eddie. The musical world lost an amazing artist. Truly an icon even if you didn't like Van Halen.

Never was big Van Halen Fan... more of a Southern Rock and punk guy....

But he was pretty iconic. I know a lot of folks will be bending arms tonite for an '80s legend.

Rock on Mr. Van Halen, Sir.

Hmm.. I want to send you music. Our tastes are the same..

RIP EVH
I'm ten years out on my cancer diagnosis. Every time I see this kind of news or lose another good friend to it I just can't help but wonder if I'll hear that diagnosis again some day.
But then none of us will get out of life alive.
I hate cancer!

Youll be fine, asshole.

Yep, David Lee, was definitely a showman. I did like Sammy, when he had his own label, but, didn't care for him when he filled David Lee's vacancy. Maybe, I just liked the original stuff. Mac

I met him once. Im of a different generational and really didnt know much about him. Sometime around early, mid 90's, a buddy was playing keyboards for him and got me backstage passes. Just before the show Im sitting backstage on an empty drum case and this guy runs up beside me stops and says "Looks like a good crowd tonite, eh?" I agreed and before I could say anything else the guy runs out onto the stage and grabs a guitar.

RIP.

Al got me a few good tickets. I was 5th row center the night David Crosby started his first tour after his liver transplant. Im talking to this cute chick beside me and David stops everything and asks her to stand up. Turns out she was the chief nurse during his operation. Cant believe I let that one get away.

Different generation huh? Hell, I saw Stephen Stills get heckled by a bunch of young college idiots back around 1976. WTF?! I remember Jimmy Buffett opening as an unknown for some hot gal named Linda something. She's on social security or welfare of something now.
Around 1983 I went to a Alabama concert. Two "new" openers played first. They were unknowns Clint Black and Alan Jackson.
Today the guys that are famous to me are those that don't waste a day of life. They live it making life better for others. A soft heart and calloused hands. One of those died today. Cancer took him fast. RIP Brian. You'll be missed.

I go back to Elvis and Hound Dog, but really cut my musical teeth on the Jefferson Airplane.

Fact is we are both old farts. LOL
I remember Elvis on Ed Sullivan and when he got drafted even though I was pretty young. Our little town had one R&R and one Country radio station. When I could sneak off with my transistor radio I listened to R&R but around my parents the only radio was country.
You cut your musical teeth on JA or (like me) just had the hots for Grace?
EDIT: Sadly, now Grace is fat and looks like an old man. Good reason. to stay off drugs!

Thats all we had was one country station and that was mostly Blue Grass. We'd wait until night when you would pick up WABC in NYC and listen to Cousin Brucie.

She didnt age well, did she.

But then I dont look 20 years old anymore either.

Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Ted Nugent were the ones in my day. I saw 3 VH concerts ('79, '80, '81)... Roth was messed up in all three.

Hell, I was on a plane, heading to Basic, when I heard Elvis had died.
It was the same for me as a kid, pocket transistor radio tuned to R&R, but, when dad was anywhere near, full-on Country.
Your post, brought back fond and funny memories. Thanks! Mac(y)

By then I was working for the local telco. My memory of Elvis passing is that he broke the phone system for the whole southeast. Everyone had to call someone else and tell them Elvis was dead.
