Are the FN SPR enthusiasts extinct?

The likelihood of being able to take a barrel off of one SPR and put it onto another and have the extractor cut line up is very slim. Timing of the extractor cut from barrel to barrel is tied to the start of threads on the barrel and receiver and how head space is set. Once a barrel is fit to a CRF action, its pretty much for that rifle only unless you rechamber.

However, if Moon Roberts or Mark Gordon say it can be done, then it can be done. They are very good at working on these actions (SPR/M70).

I'd just buy a new barrel for your new action.

Thanks Action Guy. I guess I know what action I'll be building my next hunting rifle off of.

Got her ready for 2020 deer season

Beautiful A5M. I am thinking about glass bedding mine. I keep getting a flyer when I shoot a group. Just wanted your insight on that or anyones

Mines not glass bedded. Just factory spot bedded. Stock torqued to 65 in lbs

Using some 150 SST Fiocchi I have here for this year. Will be loading some 178 ELDX and see how those do. Don’t have time to test between now and deer season so that will be in the spring. I shot 1 3 shot group right away that was about 1/4” at 100. Other group I fired when sighted in was about 1/2”

Plenty good for my use. Hand loads will shine I’m sure. I tested the 150 sst and some 165 superformance I have here. Didn’t care for the superformance as much

Superformance caters to velocity whores. Not real accurate. I run FGMM 168,175

I run the superformance in my Rock River LAR8 suppressed. About 1 MOA out of that. So I have several boxes of those.

These are deer killers. The 178 ELDX work very well in several other guns I have. Including my AIAT so I will try those next

Anything 308 is a killer.. a rock River simi auto 1 MOA? Wow you have a keeper. Never even heard that before.

Yes shoots better with fgmm. Has the bull 20” Wilson Barrel

1 inch moa at what distance?

100 yds

I shot a box of 20 after I got the gas system tuned in. Just to make sure it ran reliable. Two groups were around 3/4 or slightly above, one was 1 MOA and the other was just over 1 MOA

Wilson barrel.. now you are talking. I have a colt with a Wilson that shoot tight. Let’s see a pic of you don’t mind. Sound like a badass rifle

3 rounds or 5?

That was 4- 5 shot groups
That rifle is going to be a host for my thermal.

Is that good? I don’t mess with AR10’s much. I thought the Armalite that shot 1.5” at 100 was good for what it was but I thought this 1 MOA was so so. I’ve seen much better groups than that even out of PSA from guys in here.

Didn’t occur to me it was anything special

Is that a Rock River?

Yes RR LAR8 in 308

I won’t sidetrack this thread anymore than it is I’ll just state,

When I purchased the gun it came with a 1 MOA guarantee. With the chrome moly barrel. It will do that on average but shines with 168 FGMM. However I’m hunting with it and FGMM haven’t worked so well in the past on deer.

The stainless barrels had a guarantee of 3/4 MOA with premium ammo.

Came Wilson from the factory. My Armalite I’m not sure what that had on it. But my Armalite AR50 wears a Wilson barrel as well and that is factory

Now back to FN SPR

Simi auto 1MOA is great. M110’s are a 1-1 1/2 MOA. We used them in the Corps. I’m not a fan. I am talk consistently 1 MOA out of a simi auto. That is hard to do in my opinion in the prone.

Took the FN back out tonight to sight in unsuppressed for better movement in the blind. Couple 3 shot groups. One before adjusting and one after

Yes I used a paper to cover the other holes but giving full disclosure by posting without the paper as well. Sighted in some AR’s on the same targets before the FN

Great shooting. My SPR A2A4 can shoot like your gun but my A5M XP doesn’t. I always seem to get a flyer.

bought a brand new in box FN spr action only and used it to build my latest hunting rig. FN action, manners, 18” krieger 6.5 creedmoor, cdi bottom metal “rip Jeff”, tbac ultra 7, Leupold vx5 hd and just tuned the FN trigger myself. Love the action the rifle is ridiculously accurate and solid as a rock. Loading Barnes lrx127View attachment 7319624

What manners stock is that and whats the total weight?

I'm thinking of building more of a classic style hunting rifle as I have the bottom metal of an A3g.

Spr action
Bartlien 3 or 3b barrel
Mcmillan Winchester hunter stock
Williams bottom metal off A3g
Tuned factory trigger

Almost positive it’s an eh1 if my memory is working today. Not sure on the weight, I will try to get that for you but am away from it till end of next week.

I picked up a 24" no thread a5m spr 2400. In 2010. Just got threaded and muzzle break added. At the range with handloads 100 yds 3/4moa, not yet load developed.

They are an awesome rifle for sure. I have the A5M and just with standard MatchKings at 100, well, ill let the groups talk for themselves...

Man I’ve e been wanting one of these for years. Found a place here in Missouri that has a few SPR A5M XP’s 20” for $1800. Think I’ll make that drive tomorrow and buy one haha.

You won't regret it!! I love mine, and tack driving accurate....holy crap!!!

Supposedly they have a bunch of NIB A5M XP’s. Seem like a reasonable price for these?
18 is a pretty good price. You gotta think, the stock alone from McM is a thousand alone with the options, the Action is already blueprints, and the barrels are SHOOTERS. 18 for a match ready gun is a STEAL!!

Same, both of mine are currently 308, BUT one is a Gen1 Long Action that I'm going to rebarrel in in 260/30 to run the long OAL Matrix!

Mine are the Gen1 A5M. I had tactical bolt knobs made from stainless steel and knurled. The weight gives good momentum for working the bolt. Can work them pretty damn quick.

My match gun is a Gen2 A5M with the barrel threaded by @rigmaster10 at Nemesis Machine in Butte, MT. Its a no shit .3 MOA rifle in 308. The other one I have is a true First Run Gen1. No external mag, long action (Push Feed, not even a claw extraction system) that one is gonna be the one rechambered in 260/30.

I think the legit OG gen 1 rifles were in an HS precision stock...
They are. This is mine. HS Precision stock. Long action. Milled in blind mag. Makes a hell of a toploader for shooting the longer time limits in an RTC match!!

I have the A5M for Mcmillan A5 stock. It's definitely not a Gen1 SPR, which I believe were also in McMillan stocks (I want to say the A3 stocks). However when it comes to the A5M, the A5M came before the XP.

The PBR was a real sleeper for $550. Built several rifles off of those as well. Get rid of the shitty houge stock, add a take off SPR Mcmillan, and you had 90% of the SPR for maybe 50% of the cost.

There was a first run, as @stello1001 called it the OG run that was in an HS Precision stock, but built off the mid run LA Winchesters that used the Blind Mag set up too. Not real practical for a match gun, but being on the LA, there is A LOT of options to rebarrel to!!

I'm curious, were those SPR rifles branded "Winchester" or were they "FN" as well like the newer ones?

Winchester on the action, FN SPR on the barrel. There were 2 that were the proving rifles built on the LA - one FN has, the other one is floating out there somewhere, and I guarantee FN USA knows where it is. I can probably get a decent picture of my roll marks if you were curious.
